If you take care of your parents or other elderly, how are you preparing to age gracefully?
  • And keep your teeth and gums healthy. Take care of them. Not only brushing and flossing, but don't eat all day long and stay away from juices and sodas, since they are acidic and wear away the enamel of the teeth. Finally, try to keep your weight in check and eat your veggies (not always the same ones) and some fruits.

  • If you take care of your parents or other elderly, how are you preparing to age gracefully?
  • To add: drink plenty of non caloric fluids and keep away from too much UV (use sun screen). And avoid the heat, since older people can't regulate hot temperatures as well. And, for countries where you can afford it, get medical checkups or go to the doctor when something seems off. In my european country we have certain free, voluntary checkups at certain ages to check for things like colon cancer and breast cancer.

  • Temperature Blanket 2022
  • It's not a dumb question at all. No, if you just wet it and let it dry, it will not keep its shape. I think for that, you have to steam it, but very gently and without overheating it. Acrylic yarn is plastic and it has a memory. If you steam it while blocking, you basically tell it; this is the shape i want you to keep. But i can't tell you how hot the steam needs to be and the specifics. For instance, i don't remember if you have to touch the yarn with the iron or just steam it while hovering over it.

  • Temperature Blanket 2022
  • Oh sorry, i probably overlooked that it was acrylic yarn. There are still methods to block it, though. You can't make it hot, but you could pin it all around, spray it wet and let it dry. That could help somewhat. Downside is that it takes some time to dry of course.

  • Is it only me, or do you find all those "I deleted Windows"-posts annoying too?
  • What i really would love are tips and tricks. I remember another community that started doing that, but after a few times they stopped. Very frustrating, because it was quite interesting to read.

I also like all kinds of discussions about why one chooses this or that terminal, or why they choose flatpak over certain repositories. Discussions about what went wrong and how they solved it (because then you learn where you need to look for issues and what people need to know from you to be able to help out).

Experiences from newbies are nice too; what distro did they choose and did they run into issues.

Sharing interesting websites would be nice as well.

    Just some thoughts.

  • Is it only me, or do you find all those "I deleted Windows"-posts annoying too?
  • Personally, i would prefer it if the linux 4 noobs community would be brought back to life, or if we have dedicated threads here where we can discuss newbie stuff.

If we would go the route of threads, some helpful people who have a lot of experience could decide to help out and others could just skip the thread.

And if people would want a new community, i would hope that it is not called something like 'ditched windows', because that sounds like a recipe to make it a community to complain about windows. For me as newbie, i'm looking for 2 things; info and howto's and suggestions about everything linux, and the knowledge that there are others who are also new and ask things that would be interesting for me as well.

  • US: No mention of other political parties, other than republicans and democrats?

First off, i live in Europe, so i honestly don't know too much about politics in other parts of the world, other than what i sometimes see in the news. I hope my innocent question doesn't trigger any nastiness.

My question is; in discussions i see only talk about democrats vs republicans, for instance discussions only about Biden and/or Trump. But my understanding is that there are other political parties one can vote for. However, i never see any mention of them. So, is it that most people are not interested in those? Or maybe they don't get enough media time? Or are they seen as too extreme? Are the US basically a two-party system? And does it change over time? There are a lot of worries in the world - i don't need to name all of them - but this seems to trigger more extreme views. Does this mean that those other parties attract more voters nowadays?

    Covid brain

    !

So, a few weeks after my very first covid attack, i still have some fogginess. So, i discovered a few tiny mistakes in my little bookmark cross stitch. And i stopped working on it, because i had already fixed some other small mistakes and i was feeling disheartened. I contemplated whether i could stitch over them (but i'm a bit of a neat freak, so this tells you how i felt about it), or rip them out, or just ignore them and keep going. And for a week i was looking at that thing on my desk, waiting for me to make a decision. So, today i picked it up again and checked my pattern. I did not make a mistake. I colored them wrong on my chart...

(For anyone interested, it's the Vevaco PN 0184423 kit.)

    Kagi, view my stats?

I hope this question is allowed here (since it is one of the search engines that i now use instead of google). I'm trying out Kagi. For the trial, you get to have 100 free searches, i belief. Is there a way to see how many searches i used up? I can only find stats for Kagi, not for my personal stats. How do you all like Kagi? And if so, do you pay for it? I'm considering paying, but i would like to have some insight into how many searches i actually perform on average in a month time. I honestly have no idea. What i also do lately is ask a question to a LLM (i found Petal), so that i have a start on where to search for more precisely. Sometimes, i get incorrect answers, but often it helps me get more of a handle on what i should be looking for when using a search engine. For example, i switched to Linux and Petal helps me understand some things better, which i can then use to do a more precise search.

Please help a noob out with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 driver

    Hi all,

I have recently installed Debian 12, KDE Plasma on my desktop pc, coming from windows 10.

I haven't yet messed with any drivers, everything seemed to run just fine. Until i noticed that after 1 or more hours just browsing or watching a streaming video, my desktop pc starts to rattle as if it is suddenly hard at work, the mouse cursor becomes unresponsive, and a minute later it doesn't move at all and the only thing left is to shut down with the power button.

So, i'm pretty sure nothing is suddenly wrong with fans or CPU temperature or whatnot, but maybe a Nvidia driver should be installed? Can i just follow Debians advice here?

    Do you need additional info?

Yesterday, Proton shared plenty of their plans and thoughts on the dreaded r** site

I never go there anymore, but i made an exception to read Protons plans for the (near) future. I found it very interesting, so wanted to share here.

Yes, Proton Drive for Linux is currently not being actively worked on/update: they lack developers, see post

Update: i went to reddit because there was an AMA from proton . There, they said: *The only reason why our Linux clients are lagging from a development is simply that it is extremely difficult to hire Linux Desktop developers.

So for anyone reading this, if you are based anywhere in the European timezone and willing to take up on the challenge, apply here: https://boards.eu.greenhouse.io/proton/jobs/4140067101*

Still reading all the replies, very greatful for the tips and responses, thank you all!

    ===

Thought i would share this with you all:

I contacted Proton for a technical issue and decided to also ask about their plans for Drive for Linux. Their response:

    > Proton Drive on Linux: Regarding the availability of a Proton Drive client for Linux, this is a common feature request that many users have expressed interest in. Our team is aware of the growing demand for a Linux client. While we currently do not have an ETA for when a Linux client might be available, we have not ruled out the possibility of working on it in the future.

I'm very disappointed, since i'm probably going to switch to Linux over the weekend.

Questions; Space restricted on Proton Drive My Files?

Update; Proton got back to me and apparently it was my local drive, not a cap on Proton.

    == Hi all,

I'm preparing to move to Linux and am backing up a number of files on My Files (so, not the synced files). I have used about 90 GB on my proton account, but in total i have 550 GB available. While i was moving files, i suddenly got a popup that i only have 2 GB left on My Files. So, there is a cap on that? I have never read anything about this. Does anyone here know more?

I'm pretty disappointed, because now it will take a lot more work to decide which files i really need to keep. When i install linux, i will only have the web version of Proton Drive available, not the app. In other words, once i move to linux (not dual boot), i take it that all the sync files will be gone and i will only have My Files left. Or will it still keep the latest synced version of all the files on my Drive?

    Anyone have experience with this?

Noob question: what to arrange before switching to linux

EDIT: I am thrilled with so many awesome responses! I'm taking notes and looking into all the recommendations. Again, thank you so much for taking the time to help me out (and many others, i'm sure), i'm glad i asked!

    Hi,

I'm getting ready to switch to Linux. I'm looking for a kind of checklist of what to do beforehand. When i search online, there is a lot of advice on which distribution to choose and how to set it up, which i already know, but my question is the step before. I made a list of which programs i currently use (almost all have a linux variant or i can use them in the browser) and i am making screenshots of their settings. I have basically everything important backupped, both on my ProtonDrive and on a private server in the house. Is there anything else i need to prepare before switching? I wouldn't want to overlook something.

(I already have the distribution and am trying it out, but my plan is to actually install debian and without dual boot. Also, many, many years ago i already used debian but then i had the luxury of someone who basically arranged everything for me)

Currently, i run windows 10 with Nvidia GeForce. I already am in the process of degoogling and de-microsofting so to speak, so i don't use google drive or onedrive, or MS Office anymore (nor a lot of other things).

Apologies if this is not appropriate for this community. Have a great day :-)

    I sewed a bag

    !

All from secondhand curtain and bedsheet. Sewing, serging and handstitching. It has a lining and an inside pocket.

It will be a gift for someone.

It's so cheerful! Don't look to closely, but it is sturdy enough

Looking for modern Fitting Shell Pattern, plus sizes

    Hi all,

(I hope) I am ready to try making a bodice sloper, using the instructions from the closet historian However, the patterns she recommends are pretty much unavailable, only a couple of small sizes, for which i would have to pay an enormous amount of shipping costs, as i live in Europe.

Do you have or use a modern pattern that would be really suitable as a bodice sloper? I would be looking for something like size 14-20

She also has a video on how to make something from scratch, but she advices against it and i'm not yet a very experienced sewer, so i trust her judgement.

As an aside, am i paranoid in thinking these companies retracted these shell patterns, because they don't want to risk loosing their audience?

    Proton Photos is coming!

I received a mail and also confirmed on this forum that the status is updated to Planned.

No idea when it will be ready, but i'm very happy with this.

Request: see info about community in the sidebar, instead of the Lemmy world info

I don't know if this is possible, or maybe there is some reason that the right sidebar only shows the info about lemmy world? I would much prefer to see info from the community i'm visiting, instead of needing to click on the three dots at the top. Speaking about the three dots; in a sidebar with community info, the info to subscribe, create a post or block could be listed there as well. I personally do not really care for those three dots. If that lemmy world bar has to be there for some reason; maybe it can then be shared with community info? That you see the community, but if you scroll down, you still see the lemmy world information?

Btw, don't get me wrong; i really like Photon and it is what i almost always use.

Can i actively send mail from an alias in Proton Pass?

When i create an alias, let's say for a shop, sometimes i need to communicate with them; is it possible to use it to actively send them a mail through the alias i created for them? It's not like i can copy/paste it and use it in the webapp or something. Am i overlooking something, or is that just not possible?

    Overlocker; choosing yarn colors

    Hi all,

I'm about to purchase my first overlocker -probably the Juki MO 654 DE, for the curious among you- and i can't find the answer to one question i have:

How do you choose yarn colors. I've heard it say that some use those 4 colors, like the threading guides indicate. And others use only white, i think? Does it have to do with the loopers and needles and what is visible on your fabric?

So, those of you with an overlocker; what do you do? Is it like choosing yarn colors with a regular sewing machine?

And bonus question; do these yarn cones last as long as they would on a sewing machine, or do overlockers consume more yarn per cone?

Want to switch to linux; can i still use all Proton products?

Edit: thank you all for your answers, much appreciated to make an informed choice about the switch to linux.

As per title. I want to get rid of windows and switch to linux. I use all the proton products, both on android and windows. Is there anything i need to take into account, concerning proton? I know there is a linux version for vpn. But i seem to recall there isn't yet for the drive app but it was in the works? I have no idea how long that would take though, this year, next year?

Is there something like F-droid, but for windows software?

I find it quite hard to find open source software for windows. In time i might switch to linux, but for now i am stuck with windows 10.

Is there some reliable place where you can search for open source software?

Or is it that devs usually just don't bother with windows?

EDIT: everyone, thank you so much for your input! I will check it all out. Yes, of course windows is evil, and i hope/expect to switch to linux before windows 11 comes around, but i still need it for a few programs, unfortunately. Once these come with a linux version - which is in the works - i can make the switch. Degoogling/demicrosofting is a process and i'm working on it.

Have a great weekend and thank you for the time to answer my question.

New post disappears into the void?

I created a new post in a lemmy.world community and... it disappeared. Meaning, it did not show up in the community, nor is it visible in my profile. It's as if i didn't send it, but i did. I'm using the Photon app on the web and never had such a problem before. It was my first post on that community. When i clicked 'submit', i could just see the post as it would appear for everyone. But it never seems to arrive anywhere. I retried and created another post, same thing happens; not visible in my profile, nor in the community.

Could it be a moderation issue perhaps? It is a perfectly innocent post for a hobby community.

    Sewing and microfiber release

I'm going to cut a microfiber cloth in pieces to make small cloths to clean your glasses with. So, i was researching which overlock stitch best to use on my regular sewing machine and suddenly came across this scientific article:

    https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0048969723048726

Such a totally unexpected find, but it does make me think. I just had to share it with you, makes for a bit of a change, right :-)

(I submitted this post earlier, but it seems to never have made it to the community, so apologies if you see this post twice)

Does the trash bin delete the account, or just the particular login for that account?

If you click on your profile --> accounts, you can see the account(s) and next to the 'switch' button is a trash can; does it delete the account, or does it just remove that particular login from Photon?

Cookie wall: what is legitimate interest about

Many websites have a - huge- part in their cookie wall, called 'legitimate interest'. I never allow them and i wonder; is this just a loophole to be able to force certain cookies on us anyway?

I can't imagine it is harmless, but i never hear anyone discussing these type of cookies.

EDIT: Everyone, thank you so much for taking the effort to answer. These replies were very helpful and often quite detailed. I've read them all and it certainly gives food for thought. I also read that EU page, which is indeed not really clarifying much.

I agree that we need to do as much as possible to block all these invaders of our privacy, though it is ridiculous that we have to make so much effort to protect ourselves. And i know many people around me, who just let it all happen and are sometimes not even aware of such things as trackers. And honestly, they shouldn't have to be aware, it is infuriating that these things are either allowed, or those companies taking the - small - risk to get away with it, because most people won't bother with law suits and what not, certainly not when so many websites have these shady practices...

Again, thank you; i'm glad i asked :-)
