- A Collaborative Resource for Highlighting Active Creative, Humanities, Entertainment, and Sports Communities.
This is not a comprehensive list by any means, and is why I'm featuring this post and leaving it open to comments. I may update this as people make suggestions, and I encourage others to make their own variations on this list in the comments or in their respective versions of this community.
Also to clarify some terms here, by active I'm aiming for at least some commenting on recent-ish posts, not merely recent posts, and by the topic names...I'll let the linked communities serve as examples.

Hope this helps any newcomers find some different communities to join and participate in!
p.s. although it's now out of date, as some instances are no longer around (RIP Lemmy.film), this post is still a pretty useful resource for a broader range of communities than those listed here.
- General Discussion Policies & Related Discussions
Welcome to General Discussion! While this is a community for a broad range of topics, it is mainly intended for discussions and with that in mind, there are a few policies to help try to encourage this & direct more specific discussions to their relevant communities.
1: If you're coming from Reddit, please see the Reddit Discussion Policy for this community.
2: If you'd like to share links through link posts, please be mindful of the rule encouraging you to add context/opinion to the body of these posts, or to alter the title accordingly so as to spur discussion.
Plain link posts with unaltered titles or no accompanying body text to provide context to why you're sharing the link, your opinion, or what you would like to discuss about what you're linking may be removed at the moderators' discretion. Multiple such posts in rapid succession will be removed as relates to the no spam rule.
See also the preceding discussion regarding this second policy's institution.
3: Other instance activity and admin decisions & your opinions of them are better suited to either !lemmydrama@lemmy.world or !fediverselore@lemmy.ca (or whichever others may be around), or if it's merely reporting the decisions without your opinion, one of the various !fediverse@lemmy.world communities one may find across the fediverse.
This community does not aim to be another fediverse-focused discussion community nor a fediverse-drama related community.
---
This post may be updated as needed with additional policies, and if there were discussions on their institution, links to said discussions to help provide insight into why these policies are in place.
- [PSA] Lemmy World Federation Delays
Hey, so I know some of you may be new or may have never wrapped your head around what any of this federation stuff means regarding Lemmy, so I aim to keep this simple while linking to more detailed posts for those interested in more technical background at the bottom.
The short of it is, your posts and comments to communities hosted here on Lemmy World or elsewhere, or comments to posts from others on Lemmy World from elsewhere, may be taking awhile to be visible to others outside of Lemmy World. In other words, if you've posted to a community on say, Lemmy.nz or Aussie.zone (for the most dramatic examples), you may not have seen any responses until much later because it took that long for them to process & receive them.
This is a known technical issue with the present Lemmy version that is currently being discussed and worked on. As I understand it, this is in large part due to the concentration of activity on Lemmy World, while some other delays are related to geographic factors, both smashing together for one gnarly snag with the Lemmy software.
So what does this mean for you? Well, if you would like more timely communications with a variety of other Lemmy sites' communities, you may consider moving from Lemmy World to another Lemmy site.
Lemmy World is up to date with Lemmy, meaning you can export your settings (including user/community/instance blocks and community subs) and import on other up to date Lemmy sites. This tends to be easiest via the web interface so far as I'm aware.
Alternatively you may remain with an awareness of why you may not have seen many replies/comments to some of your comments/posts on other sites' communities, or suddenly see notifications for replies/comments to "old" comments/posts. People may only now be seeing them some time later.

p.s. if I've misunderstood the issues in some way, please correct me in the comments. I've tried to avoid citing additional configuration hiccups besides dbzer0's (e.g. I think Sopuli's recent delays were something like this), such as World's own from around a month ago to keep focus on the underlying Lemmy issue.
- The message for all these campus protests
The message should be for the US to stop sending money to Israel. Israel isn't going to stop this shit in the name of "peace". The best any US citizen can do is constantly berate the US for sending money to Israel. Biden needs to know he'll lose to the orange man in November if he doesn't take note. When you protest you need a clear demand, and the US could definitely stop sending money to Israel.
- qBT total size vs downloaded mismatch
When using qBitTorrent to download Linux ISOs, I am seeing that the total size of the download is one thing, then the total downloaded when complete exceeds (sometimes by almost double) that size.
For example:
Size Downloaded 900MB 1.56GB 1.6GB 1.91GB
Why is that thing? - The powerful need/feeling not to try sexualizing specific people or fictional characters
Have you ever come across a person/character that you may feel deep connection, or respect, or deep admiration towards - and then, at some point, all of the sudden, they are somehow about to come in light in a sexual perspective, and then you suddenly find a strong feeling in yourself that seeing them as a sexual creature all of the sudden feels terribly weird, wrong, crazy, scary, horrible etc?
Why do we not want to see or consider some people or characters as sexual people at all? (I'm not looking at people you'd find normally unappealing to start with). Even if we would get somehow interested at this new point of view, at least to a point, we just cannot seem to be able to cross that strange border?
Is it some kind of "ruining your childhood" effect?
- [Sporadic thread] What's up, how it's going?
Heya, I'm really good at inconsistency, so instead of a weekly thread, sporadic thread! Thought I'd toss one over and see what we see.
Tried any new foods, games, music, software? Finally made that mobile DJ setup so you're bangin' out beats as you ride your unicycle?
Finished that model you've been putting off for forever?
Or did you finally get your sleep schedule back on track and now you're too awake and want to wreck it again?
- [Meta] Small positive update to General Discussion
Taking a note from our fellow community Casual Conversation (now on Lemm.ee), I've added a few links to our sidebar under Additional Discussion Focused Communities to a few more specific discussion communities people might be interested in.
In the spirit of federation, these communities are all remote, that is, located off-site from Lemmy World, while remaining connected and accessible to those here on Lemmy World.
The communities added to the sidebar are found below:
💬 Additional Discussion Focused Communities:
- !actual_discussion@lemmy.ca - Note this is for more serious discussions.
- !casualconversation@lemm.ee - The opposite of the above, for more laidback chat!
- !letstalkaboutgames@feddit.uk - Into video games? Here's a place to discuss them!
- !movies@lemm.ee - Watched a movie and wanna talk to others about it? Here's a place to do so!
---
Also of note, this wasn't at anyone's request, so if any of the moderators from these communities would prefer removal from this post and the sidebar, they may message me and I'll do so accordingly.
Please remember that if you decide to participate in any of these communities to respect their rules and the rules of their instance, and that Lemmy World rules still apply in remote instance interactions.
p.s. if you're in growing communities you'd like to get more people participating in, feel free to reply to this thread with links to them!

- Lemmy is very close to getting a koala community
Even though I have most of stuff ready for the koala community that I have in mind and found some cute koala clipart I would like to use with the banner, I'm currently having a bit of difficulty in regards to the background of the banner. The idea I have is I want it to be a eucalyptus forest or a bunch of eucalyptus leaves that I can put the cute koalas in trees over, but I have not found anything to use yet and I'm also not sure how wide and what the dimensions of it should be in pixels.
What I'm doing here, is I just want to make it feel like a nice place for koala discussions, koala news, stories about koalas, and environmental actions on stopping and ending deforestation of koala homes since they are currently listed as endangered, for starters since I have been feeling that Lemmy could use this as there doesn't seem to be any koala based community here yet, as the only one I had seen is on Reddbit, and also I believe there are those on here who may even want to see more koalas showing up in their Lemmy feed.

- Koala lover here with posts that has been removed and was not notified as to the reason of it.
Hi, I don't understand what is going on and I'm not if I'm going to have to create my own community. I had made posts which are related to koalas in communities where they are on-topic and were removed with no reason given to me. I'm now more frustrated that another one got removed from an Australian with no reason given, and I'm wondering if I either need to look for a community not on Lemmy or Reddit, or create one somewhere and try to get people to join it.
Anyway, here is an example of one of the posts of mine that got removed and I don't know what it could be in violation of.
*Greetings, I'm Konala Koala, a new koala lover who has found this little corner after continually searching for any save koalas movements that are going on and perhaps growing. I'm currently feeling sad, a bit depressed, and worried about the deforestation and destruction of eucalyptus forests that happen to be koala habitats. The only things I can think of which might help draw attention on this tragedy is I had discovered there is a prototype for a Care Bear Cousin Koala going on forty years old and has never been produced or released. According to some Australians on this in another community, is she could been named Nurture Heart Koala according to her artwork. The poor thing, if she could get made and seen in Australia, especially Queensland, she could probably make a really good talking point that could lead to nurturing the koala populations back up. Here is a link to the prototype koala cousin plush I'm referring to.
Also, I did notice someone had posted a picture of a koala statue they had seen, possible at a zoo or sanctuary near Brisbane in Australia, that is dressed as what appears to be Sailor Moon. Not only did I find that very cute, but it is something that could lead to possible ideas for a fan fiction based story series about Sailor Koala who defends and saves koalas in Australia. Taken from Sailor Moon lyrics, these could be like her lyrics. "Fighting deforestation evil by moonlight! Winning koala love by daylight! Never running from a real fight, she is the one named Sailor Koala! She will never turn her back on her koala friends, she is always there to defend! She is the one on whom koalas can depend... She is the one named Sailor Koala! With secret koala powers, all so new to her! She is the one named Sailor Koala!"
Anyway, I can see there are two rules which that prohibit selling anything and running a fundraising event, but I'm not doing neither and just talking about some ideas that may be good and don't know if they are going to need explicit moderator approval.*
- Why some people are ok with authoritarianism
To keep it short the reason why some people are ok with authoritarianism is because most structures that we deal with on a daily basis are authoritarian.
Here is evidence that shows a significant amount of people are ok with authoritarianism:
https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/02/28/who-likes-authoritarianism-and-how-do-they-want-to-change-their-government/sr_24-02-28_authoritarianism_1/
This should be concerning.
And the thing is that it makes sense once you look at what are the most common systems that people interact with the most.
A clear example would be the Boss-Worker relationship. The boss creates a set of objectives/tasks for the worker and the worker sees them out. Rarely does the worker get the chance to set the higher level direction of what they are supposed to be doing with their time leaving them obedient to the boss and their demands.
Another example would be some Parent-Child relationships. Some parents treat their children as people that should show absolute respect towards them just because they are the parents not because they have something that is of value to the child (experience).
Even in the places where we do make democratic decisions those are usually made in ways that are supposed to be supplemental to authoritative decision making. An example would be how we don’t vote on decisions but instead how we vote on others to make decisions for us.
Once you add up all the experiences that someone has throughout their whole life you will see that most of them come into direct contact with authoritarian systems which means it makes that kind of way of thinking familiar and therefore acceptable.
Unlike democracy which is an abstract concept and something we only really experience from time to time.
If we want people to actually stop thinking authoritarianism is ok then we as a society are gonna have to stop using these kinds of systems / ways of thinking in our daily lives.
- Wikitionary is vastly underrated and underutilized
Why should language be controlled by central, and private organizations like Merriam-Webster, Oxford English Dictionary, etc.? Language is organic and should evolve with people. What better to reflect that than a crowd sourced dictionary?
- What is the best strategy to grow lemmy community/instance?
From my experience and from what I'm seeing there are two ways of how people get on the platform in general:
- slowly, over time - this results from people getting to know the platform through various ways
- rapidly, which basically results from some fuckup of other players, and it has to be a pretty big fuckup cause the strength of the bonds that people developed with FB, TT and reddit and the established network effect is huge.
I try to grow my instance. Obviously I'm doing approach number one, cause we are not in the middle of any fuckup currently. And it's tedious. People just ignore you. Cause your communities are basically empty. But they won't grow without people. And it's a vicious circle. And so when I'm doing that I don't have time to create content on the other hand. But creating content when nobody is reading is also tedious. But without content people won't come here. Another vicious circle!
And of course, in my case I'm alone. But we could assume that there is more than one person, maybe there are 2 or 3 or more. They might still struggle with similar problem.
So there is option number two - wait for the next fuckup. But you have to be prepared. So try to build content. Without engagement obviously. Talk to an empty wall. Like many succesful content creators did in the beginning. And then fuckup happens. And when you suddenly have a wave of new users, they see that you at least try to make a good content. This content might attract the wave.
Idk, I'm just wondering how I should invest my time and energy. Maybe we need to be flexible. Maybe do a little bit of both right?
What do you think about it? How do you grow your communities? Especially in the beginning? There should be some 101 article on this with some list or something. Or even a lemmy community "growing_fedi_community"

- How Do You Possibly Use These Forums For Discussion When
You can't even speak frankly here. I came to Lemmy because I was tired of being censored by Reddit, but it seems like this place is just as restrictive on speech as Reddit was.
People, if we are going to talk about systemic change for a better world, violence has to be a tool in the toolbox.

- Looking for an Anti-Tech or Neo Luddite group
HI, I had been trying to follow anti-tech discussion on a different account and had recently gotten removed from a second group. This time, they confused me of being a bot and didn't give me the chance to explain that I'm not a bot. The first time I believe its because I had accidentally linked to something leftist in error and didn't realize right away. The reason I have been trying to follow anti-tech and Neo-luddite is because it was making me feel good with all of the preserving nature talk, plus I read the Ted Kaczynski manifesto for starters and have it bookmarked on my laptop. If anyone can try to help me out or knows of another such group to check out, please let me know. I might be forced to create another group with my different account, figure out what to call it, and leave off the vetting for now to get people to join.
- I hate to say it but I haven't been very active on lemmy, but I want to be
Hopefully things change once lemmy.world updates to 0.19 with scaled sorting. And maybe you guys and gals have some advice for fixing my issue.
To keep my feed fresh I subscribed to all the big communities full of memes. They do have engagement beyond funny jokes, but I'm tired of how political everything is.
I'm not trying to bury my head in the sand, on the contrary, im highly aware how much fascism has taken its grips on the world. But I don't need to be reminded everytime I'm on lemmy.
So I'm hoping once scaled sorting is on lemmy.world, the lemmyverse will transform. I hope I start seeing my hobbyist community come to life.
Or if people have recommendations for large communities not full of politics that works too. Maybe memes and shitposts aren't for me.
- Threads Federating...
> You might downvote this, go ahead, I know you hate proprietary goods, but just listen.
---
Is anyone excited to see that Threads is soon to federate with us on to the fediverse? I know I am, and this is becuase I can communicate with my family from Lemmy or Mastodon as I mainly use these two platforms. I am also not saying that Threads is good, its a bad platform in terms of privacy, and Meta is notoriously shitty in terms of user data collection. I'm making this post because I was just wondering if there is someone out there like me who likes the move what Meta is doing with Threads in federating with us. We just got to be aware and be cautious and get ready because we might "spam" Threads.
I'm also not trying to get on the wrong foot, I'm just in love with Free Software, and seeing Lemmy here and discovering the Fediverse is so amazing to me. I love it already and am going to stay on it for most of my online journey.
Thoughts?

- Dont you think it is horrible how people put their political ideologies / viewpoints over human lives
Something that i find prettyd disgusting these days is how certain people put their political ideologies / viewpoints over human lives, for example, celebrating the russian invasion of ukraine because it is "a blow against US / NATO imperialism" completely ignoring all the warcrimes, the deaths, and the suffering generated by that war, the same happening with the palestinian genocide because "Israel is the only working democracy on the middle east", acting like their ideoligies are going to bring back to life all the dead people somehow
