- TIL: "Doom + Doom II" defines a new standardized compatability level for mods, ID24doomwiki.org ID24
ID24 is a specification and standard specifically aimed at mod authors and mods in general. It builds on top of the possibilities shown in the MBF21 standard, acting as a super-set of it, and was first implemented in the KEX Engine source port of Doom + Doom II. It was first used there for the Legac...

- Ashes: Hard Reset OST by John S. Weekley
I saw over the weekend that the soundtrack had been released ahead of the upcoming (!) prequel (‼️) to the amazing series of Doom mods. The Ashes series rules, play them if you haven't. The soundtracks also rule and I had the Afterglow OST in heavy rotation all last year.
This one is pretty good. Very heavy with callbacks to the previous OSTs and to the original Doom's music. "Romero Waiting for the Train" is particularly fun for it's mix-in of my favorite OG track. I can't wait to wander more post-apocalyptic subways to this groovy tune!

excerpt from the description:
> This TAS is an improvement of 3:01 over the older 11:55 TAS by ClumsyDoomer from 2017. It is the result of 490 (we made a point of counting) hours of work spanning 1 year, 10 months, and 15 days. However, we made the decision to not count the hours spent running brute forces long enough to walk away from our computers, and so only counted the hours spent “actively working on the run”. It also does not count quite a bit of time spent with routing and experimenting with test maps. Taking into account all of that, the time taken would probably be around 600 hours.

Perhaps you'll get a chuckle out of this. I played Doom (and Wolfenstein 3D) in that most glorious of all color palettes: cyan/magenta CGA (with PC speaker sound).
My friend PickledDog wrote this graphics driver and the creator of the source port FastDoom merged it into his creation.
There's a chapter select in the video that'll take you straight to the Doom stuff. And, yes, I am terrible at the game; you don't need to tell me that. 😆

- How are Doom 3's DLCs?
I recently beat the base game and was wondering what the general consensus was on the DLCs.
- Having trouble finding one particular map pack.
I recall one map where you were surrounded by enemies, but they were all fake enemies and your objective was slaying an archvile who would continually resummon them. I don't remember if it was a mod or if it was a map, I recall it being in a pack of maps with a good few weird challenges like that, but I can't remember for the life of me.
- I love that Doom 64 is finally getting some attention
Ways to play Doom64 outside of an actual N64 or emulation has been pretty scarce up until now, and it's a huge shame.
There was a slow trickle starting with SVKaiser's Absolution TC, and Doom 64 EX, but we actually have choices now:
Experiment at your discretion. They're all fun. Most of them rely on the Nightdive Doom64.wad from GOG or Steam, some are still fine with doing a tc of Doom II.
Doom 64 EX + by ATSB.
Doom 64 Super EX Plus by styd051 (for custom monster and extended map support)
Doom CE by molecicco. A modernized approach to both PSX and Doom 64. There's even a bizarre add-on mod that combines them.

- Whats your favorite enemy type?

When you think Doom, you think Demons! The Imp is the first enemy type you encounter after the zombie duders. The sounds of scraping, ripping and tearing heard in the darkness. That little demonic gurgle SFX plays from behind a door. Imp's really help build that creep factor.
What is your favorite or least favorite Doom enemy type?

- Beat Classic Doom a few days back for the first time.
The game aged beautifully. The challenge and labyrinthine mapping made for an amazing adventure. I have to say, it really trains the reflexes for shooters, surprisingly.
- What are your favorite/most used source ports for playing DOOM?
My favorite and most used is PRBoom+, more specifically the UMAP info fork, since it brings many QOL and modern features compared to the now abandoned and kinda old last official version.
Other source ports I use and love: Eternity Engine, Crispy Doom, DOOM Retro and GZDoom if I'm feeling ""funky"".
Very curious to know lemmy's favorites!
