Work from home much of the time but when I do commute into the office I cycle. 24 km one way, takes me about an hour ten to an hour twenty, I love the exercise, and I enjoy riding, except when it rains. And it has rained a LOT this year, has also been very windy and quite cold for longer than usual. On really bad days I take the ferry which takes about the same amount of time and costs about 8 bucks one way. It is somewhat quicker to drive on the way in, but considerably slower coming home in the evening, and we have no parking at work except on early start shift, so I have only driven in 2-3 days this year. I have music when I cycle which is great too now I have a Bluetooth bike helmet
I like - exercise, the pleasure of riding, being out in nature (much of my ride is along seafront) - and saves money. And now it is cycle paths just about all the way its as safe or safer than driving
I dislike - takes a lot of time, over 2.5 hours a day, but that would be the case whichever way I do it. Unpredictable wild weather, unreliable weather forecasts, has been very cold some mornings
For cold weather get some riggers gloves - inexpensive but really warm!
Just about, I only have to print the ocassional thing for a couple of organisations that dont accept an electronic signature, I use the printer about four times a year
How did they manage to do so spectacularly badly? I think part of the problem is that they were trying to predict times and locations, rather than focusing on individual offenders. Past record is highly predicitive of future behaviour, i.e. if an offender has committed assault half a dozen times, it is highly probable that they will commit another assault or similar violent offence again, we just dont know when or where
Its a fair question. I think the best approach actually is not to make it illegal for deeply unsuitable individuals to reproduce, but to incentivise them not to. Make contraception freely and easily available, and actually pay them not to have kids. Using a carrot rather than a stick approach like this will be far easier to get across the line and will present less enforcement challenges
I would have thought that in the instance of rape the burden of punishment would fall entirely upon the perpetrator, i.e. the rapist. Fair point about divorce though
Currently in most of the Western world we have very stringent standards that have to be met in order to adopt a child (and quite rightly too in my view). But in order to conceive a child naturally? Nothing, nada, zilch. Full blown neo-nazi? Meth addict? Huge track record of violence? Rapist? Paedophile? All of the above? Find a partner of the opposite sex and you're good to go! This is a massive inconsistency that I can see we will have to face up to sooner or later, maybe not to the extent you propose, but some sort of minimum standard needs to be put in place for being able to reproduce, for the sake of those children that will otherwise be brought up in horrific, abusive nightmare environments if nothing else.
Already happened here, 30% wiped off house values since the end of 2021 and still falling, interest rates still going up. Incompetent goverment has crashed the economy hard. Fortunately we're mortgage free, and getting renovations done while the economy is down
We do the rehabilitation/ treatment thing here. It does not work, at least long term - not surprisingly really given that it is an innate defect of laregly biological origin. The best solution is perhaps not prison per se but some kind of community where they can live somewhat normal lives but are isolated away from children and have filtered net access so there is no possibilty of their reoffending
