They’re fast. Pedestrians are furious: ‘fat’ ebikes divide Australian beach suburbs
  • Bicycles are frequently stolen here in Japan. I’ve experienced it myself.

The difference is that most bicycles are registered with the police and the police take theft seriously, so you’re likely to get it back.

Also, the majority of bicycles here have a dinky little lock attached to the frame over the rear wheel, so it is easy to lock in seconds.

Although the locks are not very strong, they decrease crimes of opportunity I would imagine. In fact the one time my bicycle was stolen it had been left unlocked.

  • Can I use a Broadlink RM4 (Pro) to learn IR codes AND store them somewhere I want? Would be amazing if the format can be transformed with IrScrutinizer too. (Using Home Assistant)
  • I have RM3 models and I use homebridge. The broadlink plugin works as you’d expect. Using the learn command, you then point the remote at the broadlink device and press the button you want to learn. The IR code (a long string) appears in the server log. Then you can copy and paste it to save it wherever you want. So in theory your idea is sound. But the official broadlink app won’t support revealing the codes.

  • iOS 17.5 Attention Aware bug

Has anyone else noticed that alarms and timers don’t reduce in volume if you are using the device, or when you pick up the device and it recognises you with Face ID anymore?

It’s really annoying to get a full volume alarm when you’re using the device.

iPhone 13 if it matters. Toggled attention aware on and off and also restarted the phone without luck.

A Pseudo Schuko with Hole-less Type A Pins
  • hole is just there for making production easier

The holes allow the socket to grip the plug more firmly according to this page.

But, yes. These plugs are completely normal in Japan at least.

  • Empty soy sauce bottles are perfect for plant propping
  • It looks pretty awesome. But I do wonder why your workplace doesn’t just refill the bottle instead of disposing of it and buying a new one. Props for the up-cycling though!

  • What's a candy that's practically crack for you?
  • Good to know, thanks! Now to go search for vinegar powder!

  • What's a candy that's practically crack for you?
  • Oh man I love salt and vinegar chips so much but I cannot for the life of me find anything that tastes strong enough that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg in Japan.

  • Apple sales fall in nearly all markets
  • Yeah the (lack of) difference in price between generations is ridiculous. I just bought a 13 after using my 8 for six years.

The only difference between the 13 and 14 was once graphics core. So there was no way I was considering the 14.

But the 15 has USB C, which don’t get me wrong is great, but when you have a ton of lightning cables that will need to be replaced, it doesn’t seem like such a good idea (especially when family members are still using phones with lightning).

  • Conservatives in LDP lash out over same-sex marriage ruling
  • The politicians worry that same sex marriage will result in an even lower birth rate, which seems ridiculous! It’s not like those people are currently making babies. And they might consider surrogacy or other options if they were able to marry. So same sex marriage could actually increase the population.

  • No worries. Thanks for the hard work!

  • [bug] viewing saved comments crashes the app

Hi there, thanks for the great software. Currently on 0.4.1 (4), but I’ve noticed the bug on a few previous versions.

When viewing saved comments under the user profile, everything appears fine. However, if you try to scroll it instantly crashes back to the springboard. I have a suspicion that it is something to do with the fact that I have saved many comments which include YouTube links. Has anyone else noticed this?

Edit: switched to another account to play around, and I could replicate the crash just by saving a comment which contained an embedded picture.

  • If you use a dns level ad blocker there aren’t any ads. I didn’t know there were any until I read your post.

  • Please drink verification can
  • It’s a pretty popular beer in Japan. Many people I know love it (not a beer drinker myself). I’d imagine you can probably get it wherever you live, too.

  • Is this app still being developed?
  • If you’re talking about the top and bottom navigation bars, Arctic has the option to hide them so you get full screen scrolling.

  • Do the tiles Match or should I remove?
  • Looks great. I wish my bathroom looked that nice

  • Is there is a android app that display bluesky and mastodon posts without login?
  • They both show fine in a mobile browser. I guess the OP wants an app which aggregates both into a nice layout without the need to login. Kind of like how many lemmy apps have a guest mode (ie no login but can browse freely)

  • First fermentation results with Blueberries and Pico de Gallo
  • Thanks for the info! Experimentation in the kitchen is fun! I haven’t attempted any fermentation yet. I usually take fresh pico de gallo that’s not so fresh and cook it down with some tomato paste, blitz it, and use it as a dip or pizza sauce. To prolong its life I freeze it in an ice cube tray which I then transfer to ziplock freezer bags.

  • First fermentation results with Blueberries and Pico de Gallo
  • I’m curious why you would want to ferment both pico de gallo, which is essentially a fresh salsa, and blueberries? Were you trying to preserve them or something? Some context is missing here. Maybe someone else can be of more help. You have piqued my interest though.

They follow the rules, they respect authority like you wouldn't believe, they're just fantastic, really fantastic. Look at me, I'm the greatest example of great morals, and guess what? I'm white, folks. White people, they're winners, they know how to win, they're tremendous patriots. So let's make America great again with the incredible morals of white people leading the way. It's gonna be huge, folks, absolutely huge!

  • [bug] swiping back doesn’t honor text size

First, thank you for building this wonderful app.

This is my favorite feature of the app: the ability to return to the previous post by swiping from right to left.

With the latest TestFlight version, I noticed a new bug: the text size on the returning post is set to the system size, and once complete open, switches to the user’s choice of text size. The result is a little jarring.

To replicate, set the text time to something other than the system size. View a post, go back. And then swipe across to return to the post. You should be able to see the effect.

[bug] cancel and (x) buttons don’t work

On TestFlight. iPhone 8. Cancel buttons (ie on comment screen) and (x) buttons (ie share as image screen) don’t work. Can only dismiss by swiping down.

Suggestion: Thumbnails in the feed should have an overlay to indicate what kind of content they are

I love this app, and keep coming back to it after testing other apps, too.

However, I find myself tapping thumbnails which I think are images, which instead open another site. Maybe it is my way of browsing, but I have noticed that other apps I display the content type, which makes for a more desirable browsing experience for me at least. Is this something that is in the works?

    Amazon Prime: price increase
    news.yahoo.co.jp Yahoo!ニュース

    Yahoo!ニュースは、新聞・通信社が配信するニュースのほか、映像、雑誌や個人の書き手が執筆する記事など多種多様なニュースを掲載しています。

Amazon announced monthly prices will increase by ¥100, and yearly prices by ¥1,000.

What do you think? Personally, if it helps drivers get a better wage I am all for it.

    Not remembering default feed

I’ve got a bug that I haven’t been able to pin down. Set the default feed to subscriptions but sometimes upon launch (after killing the app) it is set to all. I haven’t been able to figure out what is causing it as it seems random. Has anyone else noticed this?

Festival foods: what do you recommend?

It’s summer festival time. Just ate yakisoba at my local festival. It’s ¥400 but the noodles always seems thicker than what the supermarket sells. What gives?

Anyway, what are your go to festival foods?

[bug] Fonts are odd sizes, missing sort by new

Thanks for the awesome update just now. I’m sorry, I haven’t gotten around to figuring out how to use GitHub. I hope this will get seen.

When not using the system font size, some parts are rendered in an odd size compared to before.

Also, I can’t find the sort by new option anymore.

Also, long post titles are making the compact view less compact (maybe due to the font issue).

On an unrelated note, my .world account still cannot enable notifications but my other ones can. It just hangs on the spinning progress wheel. I am not sure how to go about fixing it anymore.

I really appreciate all you have done. Also, there was no reason to apologise for taking a hiatus. This should be a project of passion not a job.

I hope I have not come across as demanding. I am loving what you guys are doing.

I’ll try to learn GitHub so I can post bugs in your preferred manner.

    Thank again!

[bug] loading a post with no comments shows your last comment while loading

When you open a new post which doesn’t contain any comments, you latest comment from whatever post is displayed ever so briefly before the “no comments” message is shown. I managed to screen record it but I’m not sure how to attach a video.

    Shredded cheese recommendations?

    Inflation sucks!

In the last year, shredded “natural cheese” had almost doubled in price. The cheap alternatives branded as “97% cholesterol cut shred” are complete ass, and cannot even be legally called cheese.

I was used to paying ¥1,000/kg then ¥1,000/700g for shredded gouda (max value store brand), but now it is ¥1,000/600g cheddar/mozzarella mix.

I have a variety of supermarkets nearby. Also kaldi, Gyomu super, a-price etc. I just don’t want to have to keep buying 1kg bags when it is hit or miss. If you have any solid recommendations please post them here.

Im in Kyushu, but location isn’t important. Any leads are appreciated.

What did you learn in Japan this past week?

Let’s kick up the participation in this community with some general discussion.

So, what interesting tidbit did you come across this week?

Kind of random, but I learned that bull bars on vehicles we banned in the late 90’s for safety reasons.

YSK: Safari extensions on iOS let you redirect reddit urls to an alternative

Why YSK: Google returns reddit results very often when searching, which many of us want to avoid clicking, to avoid sending traffic to reddit.

I’ve seen many posts on how to avoid sending traffic to reddit for android users, but nothing for iOS.

Now, most of the options I’ve found are not free, but I had already bought StopTheMadness before. You can simply add a rule to redirect reddit.com to teddit.net. Then, you can still click those google results without hesitation.

It should be noted this won’t work system wide in safari web view, only in the safari app.

It’s summer, where are all my mint choc chip snacks at?

Normally at this time of the year, the convenience stores are overflowing with mint chocolate flavored products, for better or worse (looking at you, FamilyMart mint chocolate pancakes).

However, this year, I’m yet to find anything except for some scant chocolate offerings.

What’s up in your neck of the woods?

Do you avoid places which only accept cash!

For the past two years I have been actively avoiding places which refuse to accept electronic pavement methods. It is just so much easier to manage finances (for me at least).

I’ve even been in the situation where the only cashless payment which was accepted was SUICA, so I charged my SUICA at the register on my iPhone via credit card!

Unfortunately, there are a few holdouts (looking at you local clinics etc).

What do you do when you encounter an establishment which only accepts cash?

What food do you have in your emergency bag?

I just realised I didn’t restock my emergency bag with food so was wondering what you guys would put in?

Previously, I put soy joy (wouldn’t recommend, as they were awful), granola bars, a jar of peanut butter (easy to eat, high in calories), and a bag of Kit Kats (gotta have something nice).

Even if you don’t have an emergency bag, I would love to hear what ideas you have.

Rainy seasons - tips and tricks

Well the rainy season is here, so what tips or tricks do you have to endure it?

Workman sells rubber “hiking” boots which are great as rain boots, but not so comfortable for those with big feet.
