  • If you claim you're gonna do something you can't/don't have the power to do just to get elected, I'm sure as shit still going to blame you even if we both know you can't do anything about it.

Trump said he'd lower food prices on day one, so he gets the blame for not doing what he said. I don't care how little power he has to do it, don't claim you can do shit you can't do and whine about it after the fact.

  • Have to acknowledge my own position too. I really want to do something but I just had a kid and bad as it gets, my top priority is caring for him.

This. Plus, plenty of us don't have the energy after working multiple jobs just to keep their family surviving, which is what they want, unfortunately.

  • How many teens you think can actually read and understand legacy languages like FORTRAN and COBOL? Let alone a complex codebase written in them?

I studied COBOL a bit in college and it's not exactly hard to read short snippets if you understand other languages, but good luck wrapping your head around anything remotely complex and actually understand what it is doing without having someone who understands the language. Hell, 15-20 years on and multiple languages later, my eyes still cross trying to read and grok COBOL. The people supporting those old code bases get paid well for a reason ...

  • I really appreciated him saying 'I don't want yes men, I need people to call me on my bullshit, but I'm calling you out on yours'.

I read through the next few replies, and it seems like the anti-rust maintainer just has an axe to grind and can't stand people working in a language they don't understand.

  • I'm fairly left as well, and whenever I brought up strategic voting I was swatted down with "genocide" like the other person. I was event told by multiple "lefty" users that they hoped Trump won just so it would hurt the democratic party and "teach them a lesson". No matter that we'd be pouring gas on the fire and bringing shit home, they still had to TeAcH tHeM a LeSsOn. Ugh.

The only people who hate leftists more than rightoids are other leftists, and its for shit like that. Moral purity over pragmatism is no different than fanaticism in my eyes. As much as we may hate electoralism, its the only way to work within the system and not let fascists take over. But here we are.

  • Yet somehow, they're the darling of the gaming scene.

    It's fucking bizarre.

It's really not bizarre at all. You wanna know why game enthusiasts like valve? Take the list the other guy gave you and find a store that has close to half of the features steam offers. Add in great hardware support (my controller and my deck are some of the best experiences I've had), and a healthy dose of actually making Linux gaming viable for the average person, and it's obvious AF why game enthusiasts like valve.

Even if they can't count to 3.

  • Some of them are outright ridiculous. Like one of the protein cookie brands I like, 80% of the time I have to hulk out and end up ripping the packaging to shreds. We also see it on chip packages and cereal bags at times too. It's crazy.

  • So it's a skill/personality issue then.

I have kept up with friends I made and live across the country from me. If you lost touch with friends that live near you, you either didn't try hard enough to keep touch or they chose to let friendship with you wither away. You have access to technologies that allow you to get text, audio and video in real time with someone on the other side of the world. Losing touch with a friend means one or both of you didn't care enough to do the work to keep it up.

If physical proximity is the only thing keeping your friends around, you didn't have friends, you had acquaintances who you misjudged their participation in the relationship. I've had plenty of "friendships" go this way as well, but the people I care about I make a point to stay engaged with, even if it's not as often as I should.

  • Trump will try and purge all non loyalist officers from the military. That could lead to a fracturing of the military.

We should ask what happens when there are a large amount of military trained men that are suddenly let loose and returned to the population, but I can't think of a single time that's happened........

  • Unfortunately, I half expect that if we get a 100% chance, governments are going to see where it's going to land (sea/Africa) and decide it's not worth the spend/let's see what happens if we let it hit.

Really hope I'm wrong, but I don't have a lot of faith in humanity anymore.

  • 10000%

I was bullied for a long while in school, and much like this girl, went to school officials multiple times with no improvement (likely because one of the bullies had family in the school office). Nothing was done about the bullying until after I took matters into my own hands on multiple occasions.

I still vividly remember when I broke the nose of the office shithead and got called into the principal's office and threatened with a long out of school suspension, only to get 0 consequences after my grandfather came in and told to principal that he would do no such thing, or there would be a LONG discussion with the local school board (he was a well known person in the community) about how he did fuck all about abuse in his school after repeated notifications and only tried to punish the victim after they defended themselves

I really enjoyed throwing that back in the bully's face whenever he started his shit again, but looking back my grandfather basically cosigned the principal's shitty behavior by not making that fucker pay for the shitty decisions he made.

  • 52, which is practically middle aged by modern standards.

I don't mean to be a Debbie downer, but between the climate spiraling and the MAGA Nazis in the White House, I feel in closer to middle age in my 30s than I would closer to my fifties. I'd like to think I'll live long enough to need my 401k, but I'm not hopeful that I will.
