Tennessee’s Law On School Threats Ensnared Students Who Posed No Risks. Two States Passed Similar Laws.

  • yes, this is also what I read, that French people are mostly happy to hear a foreigner speak their language, certainly happier than if they have to speak in a foreign language...

I have been to France a few times and speak French very imperfectly, yet no one has ever told me not to speak French.

  • TBF the last two bullet points are verbose descriptions of the thing it means in C++, Java, and Python too. It's just that in JS, "this" can also be used in other places.

But yeah, in practice, every time I write JS I want to throw my hands in the air and shout "this is bullshit", but never know what "this" refers to... :D

  • Why not both?

In my country we have both state-run and privately-run trains for example. The state-run ones are mostly not profitable, they are funded by taxes. But on a few profitable routes there is a private competitor, taking it is usually cheaper but somewhat less comfortable.

  • Buses (and other public transport) being run by private companies is in no way a new idea, the only reason why it's not very widely done is that it is no longer profitable on most routes. I fail to see anything inherently bad in this, it will reduce the number of cars on the road.

  • The fediverse is somewhat inherently a low-trust environment. Centralized social media (including traditional web forums) has only one database of users, so its administrators are able to keep track of similarities (in geolocation, email addresses, style even of deleted posts, etc.). Here every instance has its own database of users; if you register on another instance, it will be very difficult for anyone to figure out you're the same person.

The fediverse is also still obscure enough that mostly it's still a relatively high-quality place and this has mostly not been a real problem. You should join an instance, and communities, that moderate to give you an enjoyable experience. What that means varies according to person; I don't mind the things you list very much, but am very glad I have not gotten any messages from fediverse chick Nicole in a while by now.

  • It's a place where many people spend several hours in one day because they are looking for a lot of different furniture. Some of them will do that during lunch hours, so that generates the demand for this.

  • Permanently Deleted

  • In principle account deletions, post/comment deletions and edits to posts/comments should all get federated... but ultimately the federated model means that there's no guarantee all instances that have copies will receive that or act on it. The fediverse doesn't forget as easily as centralized platforms do.
