What is your pet peeve in 2024?
  • Here’s a pet peeve: people who “both sides” the entire American political spectrum because they are SO uninformed that everything looks the same to them.

Here’s another: people who “both sides” the entire American political spectrum because taking a position is more difficult than saying “bah I’m above the whole shit show.”

  • Is there as much enthusiasm for Trump online today as eight years ago?
  • I remember a guy much further down that “catalyst” line of thinking telling me that things have to get worse before they can get better: a phrase that’s easy to bust out as a grand conclusion to huge sweeping societal problems, but is based on absolutely nothing.

  • Is there as much enthusiasm for Trump online today as eight years ago?
  • With turnout being the decider in our elections, I think it’s of critical importance if a candidate scares the shit out of the other side. Hilary Clinton for whatever reason definitely pushed conservative buttons and got them to the polls. The Trump phenomenon was happening at the same time, but we can’t discount the anti-Hilary energy.

While the right certainly doesn’t like Kamala, their hatred is nothing close to what the left feels for Trump. Between that and Roe, if we can’t activate voters and take this election, then we really have lost the country, and Trump’s second term will only dig that hole deeper.

    No pressure, America!

  • Elon Musk Suddenly Realizes That Teslas With "Self-Driving" Computers May Never Be Able to Actually Self-Drive
  • He did. Right in this article it says that they will upgrade the older models for free. This whole post is a circle jerk for Elon haters. I mean, I despise the guy as well but I don’t find distortions to be a useful outlet for that.

What we have is one generation of Tesla cars that might need a free hardware upgrade to fully deliver on the promises that were made.

What the post and most of the comment hear is “no Tesla can ever self drive and Elon scammed everyone and laughed to the bank.”

It’s just embarrassing. At this point I filter Elon content not only because I don’t want to hear what the jerk has done today, but because he whips people up into such a stupor so efficiently.

  • Is it offensive for me as a man to dress as a male version of a female fictional character for Halloween?'
  • This is a subtle question, so feel free to answer “none of the above.”

But in your circles, is this gender bending explicit, as in “I’m a female Wolverine” or is it just someone who’s female going as Wolverine? And in the latter case, I don’t mean that she’s pretending to be a man, just that she’s not changing the character, simply embodying it as, herself, a woman.

  • Is it offensive for me as a man to dress as a male version of a female fictional character for Halloween?'
  • A boy at my kids preschool wanted to be Anna from Frozen. His parents dressed him as Anna. I don’t think they went out of their way to feminize him - he had no wig or makeup, for example. But he was in a dress, because that’s what Anna wears. Was he a “male version of Anna?” No. Was he going as a female? No. He was just the character. Similarly, if a little girl puts on an iron man suit, is she a “female iron man” or some kind of “Iron Woman?” No.

So when you say “a male version of a character” I hear that you are not just going as a character who happens to be the other gender but you are putting a specific twist on that character. There’s nothing wrong with that necessarily. But it can definitely go wrong depending on the character and how you handle it. We’d just need more information. It’s one of those things that doesn’t have bright line rules. Like all issues of content offensiveness.

  • Elon's Death Machine (aka Tesla) Mows Down Deer at Full Speed , Keeps Going on "Autopilot"
  • Yeah there are edge cases in all directions.

When people want to say that someone is very rare they should say “corner case,” but this doesn’t seem to have made it out of QA lingo and into the popular lexicon.

  • Elon's Death Machine (aka Tesla) Mows Down Deer at Full Speed , Keeps Going on "Autopilot"
  • If you want to motivate people to action, frame it in terms of the property damage they’ll experience to their car when it hits a child. We’ve already seen how far the American public is willing to go for children’s lives, and it’s not very far at all.

  • Most of the trick-or-treaters have been skipping my house, and I finally figured out why
  • In a rural area, that makes sense. I can also understand if a school or parent group organizes this for kids who live in unsafe areas. But it’s perhaps even more popular in affluent areas because the paranoia there is just that intense.

  • Most of the trick-or-treaters have been skipping my house, and I finally figured out why
  • That’s sad. We only leave the bowl out during the time we are out trick or treating ourselves. All trick or treating is under fire, it seems. Have you heard of trunk-or-treat? Gah. And even people who live in safe areas will like their kids into a car and go drive to some affluent neighborhood where the decorations are fancier and full size bars are being given out. I greatly value the experience of knocking on my neighbors’ doors and it’s sad to see people discount this community building experience.

  • M4 Mac Mini's Power Button Has New Bottom Location
  • Apple thinks that loud fans are a bad user experience, and I can’t fault them on that. So they design around convection as much as possible: hot air rises and leaves the case, cool air enters from below and the case geometry and plastics guide it to the areas that need it most, just by their static shape. That carefully crafted path for the air to follow is designed around the computer being right side up and it doesn’t work the same if the thing is inverted.

  • D4: it's not that theres nothing to do, theres just nothing to get

I enjoy the various endgame activities and tweaking my build to try new things. But it doesn’t seem right that I am only level 80 and haven’t gotten a piece of gear I care about in a long time. Grinding out those last Paragon points hardly seems worth it.

Linking to replies from inbox isn’t working and I’d ask this be given some priority.

    Bug description:

    1. Get a reply to a comment
    2. View your inbox, see that reply
    3. Wonder what your comment was again, and what they are replying to…
    4. Tap their reply

Expect: go to the reply, in context, in the thread, ideally with your comment that they are replying to shown also (wefwef currently does this)

Actual: go to thread, but neither the reply nor your comment are shown - you have to scroll the entire thread and find them

Why a priority? Because this directly impedes back and forth conversation, which is the whole mode of Lemmy.

Appreciate the work. Thanks for hearing this feedback.

the delicate peeling of manzanita bark

Manzanita reminds me of my grandfather, passed on years since. There was a lot of it on his property and as a kid it was the only place I ever saw it. I’m happy that my current climate allows me to grow a couple. They help me remember.

It was a nutso year for poppies (and most everything here). Cant wait to see next year.

These poppies have just been propagating naturally in my yard. I don’t do anything except leave them alone. We got so many this year that we spotted several people stopping to take selfies with them :)

This is the first year I actively gathered these seeds and spread them around my yard to places that poppies don’t just spring up on their own. If we have any kind of rain this winter then spring will be insane.

It’s pretty fun trying to gather these seeds because by the time the seed pods are mature, they’re also bent and flexed, which makes them split and POP and spread their seeds everywhere as soon as you touch them. So you have to grasp the whole pop in your hand quickly to get hold of any seeds. My kids had a blast with that.

The wet winter and spring really made for a wild year here. It’s dry usually so only hardy, opportunist plants tend to survive. But this was such a year of plenty that everything green just WENT FOR IT. Man I hope we get more like that.

TIL that the USDA hardiness zones are each a ten-degree band of average minimum temperature in the fahrenheit scale, and the “a” and “b” suffixes break each zone down further into 5 degree ranges.

I guess I thought they were more like distinct biomes but it really is just uniform chunks of temperature range. I also didn’t know that they were defined by the US Department of Agriculture, who created the first such system to help gardeners. There are similar maps for Australia, Canada, and parts of Europe, but no single global system. What’s your zone?

Here’s what Romaine lettuce eventually becomes

I had a great year for Romaine lettuce. After learning how nutritious it is, I started a bunch of seeds and they did really well. We had more than we could eat, and after a camping trip I came home to find they’d bolted (see picture). I recommend trying this plant if you have any interest. They are reportedly water intensive but I didn’t find them excessively so. I was also told they will bolt at the first sign of heat but that didn’t happen for me either. They were mature and harvestable for weeks, even with some hot days.

Took my son camping this week...

For years I’ve been taking a pee jug along when I go camping. I buy a 2-gallon jug of kitty litter and keep the nice wide-mouth jug it comes in. They’re firm plastic and have a nice handle. I keep one right outside my tent for midnight pees. Way easier than hoofing all the way to the bathrooms or whatever.

This time we actually brought the pee back and added it to the compost pile! It’s like two of my hobbies finally came together after years. Huzzah!
