Stuck in the middle with you
  • My dad can write DOS commands better than most people my age can and I work in Tech. beyond that? he's clueless. Younger generations can either type with their thumbs or their index fingers and know absolutely nothing about how things work. If it's an app they can open on their phones or tablet devices then perfect, they're all over it. Beyond that? no way.

People my age and from my generation can type well, can figure things out and fix issues on computers, and know our way around tech. Why? cause we were raised in an age where things were essentially "kicking off". I was taught typing in high school. Beyond that most of us used AIM, ICQ, MSN Messenger, mIRC, etc so if we weren't taught it in high school we learned it that way.

We learned html, php, javascript, etc via Geocities, setting up PHP messageboards, hell even just customizing our Myspace page. younger generations don't have anything like that so they don't know it. We learned it in our free time to customize our online experience. We had daily consistent shows like The ScreenSavers or Call for Help to teach us how to use Windows or even introduce us to Linux. I learned to build my first PC thanks to Leo Laporte and Patrick Norton. countless magazines and books to pick up to read how to do stuff. And in those days if you wanted to game on PC you pretty much had to build your own PC. No one made prebuilt custom gaming pcs. So you had to learn that stuff.

Today things are all prebuilt for you. gaming pcs, phones and tablet apps, etc. People today just want things to "just work" and if there's anything needed beyond opening an app and logining in then they're not interested. Finding and signing up for instances? forget it.

  • EA Anti-Cheat arrives for Battlefield 1 breaking it on Steam Deck / Linux
  • Honestly Valve needs to have a policy for this. If a game that once worked on Steamdeck and now no longer works after publisher intervention then refunds need to be issued. I have BF2042, BFV and BF1 and 1 was the LAST one I could still play on Linux. Now I have 3 digital paperweights that I can't play anymore. I want my money back.

  • Companies are finding new ways to monetize personal data, too often without proper notice or consent. ICYMI, three current examples that you may want to act on to opt out: PayPal, LinkedIn and 23andMe
  • honestly the ONLY reason I'm still on Linkedin is the entertainment value. Threads by game devs are just...wild. just that ONE specific group provides a great hearty chuckle in the morning without insanely idiotic they are.

You want to read threads by individuals who think they float on water, their shit don't stink, and each one is a personal jesus and then fight with each other over it? go read threads by game devs on linkedin.

  • Reddit says it is not covered by new Online Safety Code as it has moved its jurisdiction to the Netherlands
  • same with me and /r/Toronto got banned for stating a long dead prime minister was horrible to indigenous people. they used the excuse that I was submitting too many articles about crimes in the city as that subreddit's mods automatically remove any content about crime or pro Palestinian content.

Post god knows how many photos of the CN tower, the fucking sun setting or snow...hey that's great! anything that's news worthy and potentially paints the city in a bad light? nope, censored. It's so bad that i'm convinced the mods there are being paid under the table by the City.

  • Star Citizen Expose Paints a Fairly Bleak Picture: 'There's No Actual Focus on Getting the Game Done'
  • I honestly don't even think they'll get that far. I mean they've announced it now, yet again, for a 2026 release date...two years from now. they've been doing this for the past decade. "It'll release in 2016" then it's "Squadron 42 coming 2018" and so on and so forth. Mark my words we'll get to 2026 and at their little convention they have to further milk their userbase of money they'll announce Squadron 42 for 2028 but please, user, they need more backers and as a reward for backing you'll get a fancy ship you'll never get to keep.

  • X's controversial changes to blocking and AI training saw half a million users leave for rival Bluesky in just a single day
  • Because people "just want it to work".

from what I've read on bsky is that people don't like Mastodon due to the instances. They don't want to figure that out. Either because they're too lazy or because they've spent so many years utilizing apps that "just work" that it's beyond them.

That's the meat and potatoes as to why Mastodon isn't taking off, it's "too much work" to use Mastodon.

The Official Teaser Trailer for Star Trek: Section 31 Is Here
  • So Star Trek Online is an MMORPG and has been around for a several years now. In the game there's a story, a convoluted one, but a story none the less.

Now imagine every single thing that has ever happened in the entirety of Star Trek regardless of tv show, movie, timeline, multiverse, animated show, whatever. everything. think of everything that has ever had "Star Trek" in it's title. got it? good. it's in the game. and in the story.

One aspect is the mirror universe which is a decent chunk of the story and it's a good excuse to bring back old Star Trek actors whose characters might be dead. Like there's A LOT of mirror universe stuff in the game.

really at the end of the day Star Trek Online is essentially the multiverse nexus of all Star Trek.

  • True?
  • The funny thing about apple is just how far they've moved away from Jobs' "vision".

It was clearly evident when they released the Apple Pencil. Jobs hated Stylus'. one of the reasons he killed the newton, and a reason why the iphone/ipad never originally had one as he was quoted as saying "why would I need a stylus? I have 5 of them on my hand"

I mean Apple is like a cult that worship a dead god who would burn current Apple to the ground and start over if he came back.

  • The Official Teaser Trailer for Star Trek: Section 31 Is Here
  • looks like Star Trek: Suicide Squad.

And what's with Trek suddenly being like "Yeah, Rachael Garrett...lets really bring her into the fold" it's like show runners at paramount FINALLY noticed that Yesterday's Enterprise is a lot of fans favorite Trek episode of all time....with the alternate timeline...focused on military and action...ah shit yeah it all makes sense now.

  • Men in their 40s, what’s one piece of advice for men in their 20s?
  • appreciate what you have now. take your time, you have tmie right now, don't worry about finding your dream situation in live be it work, love, living, whatever just experience life. you're young, you hopefully have some money, so experience it if you can. If you're going to drink, do it now cause when you hit my age hangovers last 2 days and after one or two beers you're pissing up a storm.

Don't complain about a week taking forever and you hope the weekend comes soon because once you hit your 40s all that "time" snowballs together and you'll be begging the days to go by slower. Things start speeding up and people start leaving you and you have no choice but to go along for the ride and hope for the best. You're still in your 20s, cherish the time you have. hold onto it. apprecaite it. Take as many photos as you can, take as many videos as you can and save them. Friends and lovers will come and go but those memories from your 20s will last forever. make it easy to remember them.
