• What open-source software would you like more people to know about?
• Owncast Stream whatever you want on your own platform and announce natively to the Fediverse!

IDK why but tons of folks think it's not feasible as they need million dollar computers. I've streamed to 70+ open streams, albeit as a test, on a like $5/month VPS. The key is that the resources needed are how many qualities you're transcoding, not how many folks are viewing. Yes bandwidth is needed for each viewer, but that's significantly less than people imagine.

Full transparency I run the !owncast@lemmy.world community, but I'm in no way affiliated with the project. I just love open platforms and open source.

• Are there any innovative platforms in the Fediverse?
• I stream on Owncast and really enjoy it. One of the easiest installations I've ever had with software. And despite what lots of folks think you don't need a million dollars to stream to groups of folks.

Full disclosure I run the !owncast@lemmy.world community and actively promote it on Matrix if anyone is interested or need help. :-D

• The President of the United States is blocked on this instance
• No, I disagree. Threads is blocked. POTUS decided to set up an account on a blocked instance.

• Thoughts on VPN providers?
• I've been on Proton for years and I've had a Visionary account for years. Proton's price doesn't really go up, but the quality and features does immensely. They give me extra storage every year. I get more VPNs, more password managers, more and more and more. IMO they have a track that shows they care about privacy and want to make things better.

• Facebook snooped on users' Snapchat traffic in secret project, documents reveal
• Why? It's not illegal, people don't care, they've decimated privacy to the point no one cares, so they're doing nothing wrong as Lon as they can justify all his horrendous shit to themselves.

Telegram is giving away FREE Premium subscriptions! All they need from you is to use your cell phone as a relay to text out their OTP codes! And the recipient of the OTP sees your phone number! What could POSSIBLY go wrong with this deal?

PLEASE don't use Telegram! I personally recommend Matrix as it's totally FOSS, you can self host, there are tons of front end clients to choose from. Or even use Signal. I have my own issues with Signal, the fact they don't allow third party clients, you can't self-host, they have a proprietary shim in their stack that only they know what it does, they were pushing crypto, etc, but at least Signal is better than this garbage.

VideoLAN @videolan App Stores were a mistake. Currently, we cannot update VLC on Windows Store, and we cannot update VLC on Android Play Store, without reducing security or dropping a lot of users... For now, iOS App Store still allows us to ship for iOS9, but until when?

• Remember when cavemen unga bunga'd about dinosaurs? Whatever happened to those dinosaurs! It's like the Flintstones wasn't actually the ground breaking documentary it was or something!

• Tim Sweeney emailed Gabe Newell calling Valve 'you assholes' over Steam policies, to which Valve's COO replied internally 'you mad bro?'
• If scale is no longer an issue, why can't Epic create a store with similar functionality to steam? Because it's not about that. It's about Tim not being able to pocket as much.

In the Core of the Carina Nebula - APOD 2024-02-05

https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html

Explanation: What's happening in the core of the Carina Nebula? Stars are forming, dying, and leaving an impressive tapestry of dark dusty filaments. The entire Carina Nebula, cataloged as NGC 3372, spans over 300 light years and lies about 8,500 light-years away in the constellation of Carina. The nebula is composed predominantly of hydrogen gas, which emits the pervasive red and orange glows seen mostly in the center of this highly detailed featured image. The blue glow around the edges is created primarily by a trace amount of glowing oxygen. Young and massive stars located in the nebula's center expel dust when they explode in supernovas. Eta Carinae, the most energetic star in the nebula's center, was one of the brightest stars in the sky in the 1830s, but then faded dramatically.

Developing a Game with Steam Deck in Mind - The Steam Deck is a Dev Dream
handheld.quest Developing a Game with Steam Deck in Mind

The Steam Deck is a Dev Dream come true.

The Steam Deck is a Dev Dream come true. I’ve always dreamt of making a game for a handheld console, but this is better. Let me tell you why.

Long story short: They say “build the thing you’d want to use yourself” and that’s how I ended up developing an action-roguelite game (ahem, check it out on Steam if you’re keen) with the Steam Deck in mind, starting as early as the prototype stage.

The Pleiades: Seven Dusty Sisters - APOD - Jan 29th 2024

https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html

Image Credit & Copyright: Craig Stocks

Explanation: The well-known Pleiades star cluster is slowly destroying part of a passing cloud of gas and dust. The Pleiades is the brightest open cluster of stars on Earth's sky and can be seen from almost any northerly location with the unaided eye. Over the past 100,000 years, a field of gas and dust is moving by chance right through the Pleiades star cluster and is causing a strong reaction between the stars and dust. The passing cloud might be part of the Radcliffe wave, a newly discovered structure of gas and dust connecting several regions of star formation in the nearby part of our Milky Way galaxy. Pressure from the stars' light significantly repels the dust in the surrounding blue reflection nebula, with smaller dust particles being repelled more strongly. A short-term result is that parts of the dust cloud have become filamentary and stratified. The featured deep image incorporates nearly 9 hours of exposure and was captured from Utah Desert Remote Observatory in Utah, USA, last year.

I wasn't worried about climate change. Now I am.

Research paper referenced in the video that makes Dr. Hossenfelder very worried:

Global warming in the pipeline: https://academic.oup.com/oocc/article/3/1/kgad008/7335889

Abstract

Improved knowledge of glacial-to-interglacial global temperature change yields Charney (fast-feedback) equilibrium climate sensitivity 1.2 ± 0.3°C (2σ) per W/m2, which is 4.8°C ± 1.2°C for doubled CO2. Consistent analysis of temperature over the full Cenozoic era—including ‘slow’ feedbacks by ice sheets and trace gases—supports this sensitivity and implies that CO2 was 300–350 ppm in the Pliocene and about 450 ppm at transition to a nearly ice-free planet, exposing unrealistic lethargy of ice sheet models. Equilibrium global warming for today’s GHG amount is 10°C, which is reduced to 8°C by today’s human-made aerosols. Equilibrium warming is not ‘committed’ warming; rapid phaseout of GHG emissions would prevent most equilibrium warming from occurring. However, decline of aerosol emissions since 2010 should increase the 1970–2010 global warming rate of 0.18°C per decade to a post-2010 rate of at least 0.27°C per decade. Thus, under the present geopolitical approach to GHG emissions, global warming will exceed 1.5°C in the 2020s and 2°C before 2050. Impacts on people and nature will accelerate as global warming increases hydrologic (weather) extremes. The enormity of consequences demands a return to Holocene-level global temperature. Required actions include: (1) a global increasing price on GHG emissions accompanied by development of abundant, affordable, dispatchable clean energy, (2) East-West cooperation in a way that accommodates developing world needs, and (3) intervention with Earth’s radiation imbalance to phase down today’s massive human-made ‘geo-transformation’ of Earth’s climate. Current political crises present an opportunity for reset, especially if young people can grasp their situation.

My basic summary (I am NOT a climate scientist so someone tell me if I'm wrong and I HOPE this is wrong for my children), scientists had dismissed hotter climate models due to the fact that we didn't have historical data to prove them. Now folks are applying hotter models to predicting weather and the hotter models appear to be more accurate. So it looks like we're going to break 2C BEFORE 2050 and could hit highs of 8C-10C by the end of the century with our CURRENT levels of green house gases, not even including increasing those.
