  • It doesn’t help that a lot of strays/rescues have a good chunk of pit bull blood in them.

Both of my dogs are rescues from programs in the southern US. One of them certainly seems to have some pit in him…beautiful brindle coat, block head, incredibly strong jaw, stocky-muscular build. He’s dumb as a bag of rocks but incredibly loyal and affectionate. Because of the stigma around pits, though, I’m afraid to get him DNA tested.

  • Between the VA, Medicaid, Medicare, Private Insurance, cash patients, free clinics, HMOs…and then in the prescription world, private insurance, cash discount groups (i.e. GoodRX), store membership programs, and PBMs…America really has literally every type of insurance.

And unfortunately, the systems that the rest of the civilized world realized long ago are the “best” are, in America, the worst implemented and worst funded (state-funded (by a small flat tax) universal coverage and Medicare, which only covers the most sick and frail chunk of the population)…while the least efficient system (Private insurance) is not only the most common in working-age people, but also often either tied to employers or prohibitively expensive (quite a sticker shock looking at COBRA or Marketplace plans before realizing that healthcare is quite often the second most expensive part of payroll, and for low-wage workers may even be the most expensive).

And then there’s the VA, which could be a great system, except the government consistently fucks the doctors and the hospitals and surprised-pikachu’s when it falls on its face over and over again.

  • What about a makerspace?

I have a shed. I don’t have a garage. I don’t have any more room for any more tools. Most of my tools are things I’ve used for one or two projects and that’s it.

Personally I’d much rather have a maker space that has a tool library so I stop spending so much money on tools that I need for one project. Like a hardwood floor nailer. I’ve got full hardwoods in my house now. Wtf do I need that for? Every time I find out a friend is going to start installing hardwoods, it turns out that they already bought the nailer by the time I found out.

  • For the sake of comparison…

1940 median US male salary was $956. Women earned about 62¢ on the dollar to men.

Adjusted for inflation, that’s about $21,800.

Median US income (overall) in 2023 is $42,800.

You mean to tell me productivity has gone up 4.8x, and I don’t even see 2x the increase in salary.

Put otherwise, if my hours are worth nearly 5x to you, why aren’t they even worth 2x to me?

  • In my area 5mg is the max “serving size”.

But we have gummies, salt-water taffy, mints, the occasional lozenge, seltzer, soda, chocolate bars, oil, pills, and the aforementioned “Crystal Light”.

Plenty of options that aren’t smoke.

  • Well, one reason is that they’ve been utilized for Amber Alerts. Granted a lot of cities/states haven’t been able to figure out how to practically scope the announcements, but they are helpful.

Another is the ever-changing climate. My region (Southern New England) rarely ever gets tornados. We had three a few weeks ago. One was in my hometown, and another was a couple of blocks from my bosses house. So while you may not be “prone” to natural disasters, that is likely to change.

That said, if there ever were a reason to activate a National EAS, we would probably feel a lot better not being warned. That situation would likely be for confirmed launch of several nuclear munitions, or an eminent meteor strike, or something else cataclysmic that a few minutes warning would really do nothing except fill our last moments with fear.
