  • On Google pixel, is there a way to search ONLY locally when searching apps?
  • You are correct. I apologise and I'll edit my comments. I don't know why I thought it was foss but looking at the policies it seems reasonably decent.

I'll check those suggestions as well. Thanks for setting me straight!

  • On Google pixel, is there a way to search ONLY locally when searching apps?
  • Best way is to use a different launcher. You can install a few and switch between them. Setting up a new one can be a bit time consuming but you get a feel for them doing so. Keep notes.

I used Nova for years but unfortunately it's now owned by a data collection company. I found it difficult to find another but since being on Lemmy and reading posts like these, I've finally moved to Niagara.

It's very different but I suggest it for you because of your need tothe search for installed apps. That's what it's based around, there's no separate app drawer. It's very clever and easy to use once set up, and well worth the effort.

The win is that it's FOSS.

It's not FOSS but the privacy policies are decent. You can read a summary here.

Most features are free but the paid version has a seven day trial. It's a very reasonable cost which you pay annually and I think it's worth it if you're going to use the app. It's very mature and the dev deserves to get paid for it, especially at the low cost he's asking. Check his website.

As you can probably tell, I'm a huge fan.

EDIT - as pointed out, it's not FOSS. My apologies and I've edited accordingly.

  • Looking for advice: BEV vs PHEV for Company Car in UK
  • Is this your only car? (Sorry if I missed it in your post.)

If you're concerned about range and charging, it's worth remembering a PHEV doesn't actually need any charge to run. Some drive less sprightly and others are not too affected.

If you can plan and integrate charging into the longer runs to work without stress, then a BEV is much better, especially when you consider that so much of our driving is short journeys. Longer personal journeys aren't difficult to plan, there's Zapmap and Google maps etc.

If you can change to Octopus they will sort everything for the cost of the charger plus install. Myenergy Zappi is about the best for only a little more than the cheaper Ohm crap.

The Octopus EV tariff is very cheap between 11.30pm and 5.30am, and covers the whole house. When you plug in the car, it makes a plan which can extend beyond those times if there's excess renewables in the grid. When that happens the whole house benefits during those times.

If you need an underground channel dug for the cable, you'll have to get that done yourself before they install.

Otherwise, I'm very happy with mine. I hope this is relevant and useful for you.

I've also heard talk of hydrogen cargo ships but I don't know if that's realistic.

There's also a container technology that's been developed at Sheffield University, I believe. Each hydrogen molecule is held within its own container and it effectively becomes a liquid. Great for storage and transfer.

  • Hydrogen is made using fossil fuel energy. Compressing it to liquid is, I believe, an expensive and inefficient process. There's no magic solution unfortunately.

Designs chosen for mini nuclear reactors

    Xpost from UK Energy.

Are we never going to stop this madness?

Nuclear will not help us with immediate energy needs, it will not help with climate change and it is worse for the environment, and it costs more than renewables.

The only people who benefit are the shareholders of nuclear companies and the government shit stains who pocket their brown envelopes and take the "consulting" jobs offered by the industry for services rendered.

And all this time, effort and money, OUR MONEY, is not being spent on renewables that can do what we need NOW.

We cannot continue to accept this or any other option that is not renewable.

Any and all opposition against renewable energy is generated and spread by the nuclear and fossil fuel industries.

Nothing I've said here is even controversial, there isn't any hiding from it.

We have to fight this and we have to win.
