  • I should reword what I mean: I mean that most programmers do not think using a materialist philosophy. Their decision making is delegated to the decisions of capital and liberal idealism of solving capitalism through technological superiority.

A majority of programmers in the West do not want to admit that their field is and has always been predicated on the wholesale suffering of the most vulnerable. That a majority of the innovation in the field is hoarded by oligarchs or that the real economies of their countries are barely holding onto to support them. These conversations are entirely absent in favor of profit margins and finance capital (because CS has been instrumental in coordinating and providing a space for finance capital to thrive)

  • I can tell it's slop because human artists don't dream of bombing a parade and wouldn't want to be attached to that.

genAI is used by the worst and laziest human beings.

  • The people reading up on machine learning are the ones who want to exploit it for personal gain which leads to them absorbing the perspective of capitalists. People don't go into CS for their love of lambda calculus, they go into it because the West's austerity neoliberal hell has destroyed all other career paths. The US has made this explicit with DOGE but this is the pattern in all western countries and in the global south.

The CS track at my uni is far, far easier and less demanding than most other majors including ones like psychology. My humanities professors (I'm doing a double major) complain that the CS program is so railroaded that students are being exposed to the liberal arts less and less each year. Like, the resume course I mentioned counts for your core communication requirement for every student when in the past that was reserved for a mandatory foreign language track that all students had to take. They made this change and then lied to all the liberal arts departments that it wouldn't affect them when the reality is that far less students are choosing the humanities and thus the admin sees this as a justification to defund the liberal arts school even further.

Capitalists do not want smart, dedicated and innovative computer scientists they want the next prole they can overwork so they can build their new scam to destroy more of the real economy. Most "computer scientists" are like western economists who cheerlead for capital.

  • This person should have their computer taken away from them lmao.

GNOME doesn't have a minimize and maximize button because they're not needed. If you want to hide a window in GNOME you either can physically hide it using the window context menu either in the app or through the shell or you can go into shell overview and throw it into another workspace.

Me "minimizing" an app on GNOME

It's 2024, people expect apps to have little icons near the WiFi icon. Why is Gnome throwing out decades of people's training and expectations? Wait, what's that?

Computer Science has devolved into training people to accept private capital products as philosophy and disregard all other things. There is no system tray in GNOME because there is no accepted system tray protocol on GNU/Linux. Designing for background apps that run without a window open isn't part of GNOME design and is part of the shitty slow proprietary OS interface that demands that all chromium junkware be open at all times to make your computer seem slow so you buy a new one.

Is this a fair comparison? No. Do I care? Yeah, obviously.

Summarizes this whole shitty blog post.

Here's an evergreen quote from 2005 about the whole Gnome situation:

I don't use Gnome, because in striving to be simple, it has long since reached the point where it simply doesn't do what I need it to do.

Please, just tell people to use KDE.

    Linus

Here is a quote from 2005 (when GNOME 3 wasn't even an entity) checkmate gnome liberals!!!

  • American chuds are only like this because of the unique treat import-based economy and geopolitical hegemony which the US has been flailing around to keep. Lose that base and you'll see a formation of a wide proletariat similar to other pre-socialist nations.

  • propagandists redefining fascism to be "corporatism" a la Mussolini is still paying off dividends.

  • Are our history textbooks just going to be filled with genai slop after a certain point? I guess the better question is if Ukraine will still exist in the history books in a few years.

  • trained programmers or computer scientists

You overestimate the abilities of programmers. Most of these labor aristocrats are paid to enact the will of their bosses and do not think of much else. There is little to no materialist thought in this field dominated by venture capital and military weapons contracts and that's by design.

My intro to computer science course in undergrad had zero discussions, zero readings, zero writings about the position of computers in society, it was basically a shitty coding job training course and related very, very little to actual intellectual thought outside of being able to write a specific type of computer document (python) in a very limited capacity. My professor also unironically believes in Chinese slave labor death camps in 2025 when I innocently mentioned studying in China post-undergrad, go figure.

the 1 mandatory writing course for engineers? How to write your resume.

  • Comrade Gordon Chang has never faltered in his mission to deter the imperialists.

  • As a desktop owner, you're going to have to service your machine at some point. Choosing your own parts will make that part easier.

  • This feels far too expensive for a beginner setup. You should comparison shop because I think you can get much better specs for that price point.

I still would advocate for building your own desktop. It's good also for future desktop maintenance and will knock off 100-200 dollars from the price (windows tax and assembling costs).

  • The sad thing is that this will just be the excuse capitalists will use to further erode working conditions in the imperial core's high tech sector which will just sink the entire financialized economy further.

  • I guess this is what's replacing USAID propaganda, and the worst thing is that this will work on Americans because anti-China brainworms can be milked for eternity.

  • “Huawei is a ferocious competitor,” Mr. Allen said. “It brings a mixture of very high quality talent, psychotically driven work culture and the deep backing of the Chinese government.”

highly educated workforce focused on bringing results and subsidized/regulated by the country's government, what a nightmare!

  • If you ask the people around me it's "pro China glazer"

And honestly thats fine with me.

  • Firstly, generative AI has valid use cases for accessibility and quality of life features.

Hard disagree. First, to get it out of the way, disabled artists should not be expected to use LLMs to "reach" the level of able bodied and neurotypical artists. I've seen this take be brought up in other places and its always shrouded in the same ableist rhetoric. Not that you were implying that if you arent.

Second, none of these features are necessary which cant already be replaced by a human. Need to summarize an article, what if the author just writes a summary for the article as well? The speaker has an accent or speaks in a way thats hard to hear: closed captioning subtitles and more access to sign language translators. There are better methods to solve these problems that dont require the resource consumption and lack of rationality that an LLM provides.

We were already in the hellscape dystopia when the first programmer signed an NDA and computers started becoming the property of corporations rather than being collectively owned by society itself. Nothing has changed except the absurdity of it all.

  • unless I want to be my generation's equivalent of a boomer still using a Nokia 3310 instead of an iPhone or Android.

And this is bad how? Technology isn't inherently better because it's new or widely used. Old printers that dont brick themselves because of not using the correct toner are more useful than one that can print out a page of AI slop.

AI isnt the "smartphone revolution". The technology has existed for decades, they just found a way to market it to users and creating this shock and awe narrative of promised breakthroughs that will never come.

Dont get caught up in the hype because a dying, deindustrialized empire thinks a slop machine will defeat communism. Israel doesn't use AI to accurately predict which Palestinian father and his family to vaporize, they use AI to make this process more cruel and detached.

  • I guess its not useless on technicality, but it is definitely malicious. Now that Chinese tech firms want to create their own models, they've done the same web scraping frenzy that takes down websites and forces everyone to "cloudflarize" themselves or risk being taken down by an AI bot scraping every single webpage on the site, even ones that aren't meant to be accessed. These programs constantly need more and more training data to keep being relevant but none of that data is sourced in an ethical way. Everyone else has to eat the externalities that these companies offload because this technology is no way sustainable if these scummy tactics aren't used which should be a death blow to its adoption but it never is.

The energy requirements for genAI is immense. While China has made inroads in sustainable energy and optimizing their models, none of the western models even care and will willfully accelerate climate change for zero benefit to society. This isn't a "Nokia phone to apple smartphone" jump in progress, this is just a very well tuned crypto scam.

Generative AI as it's being presented now is just a paper crown technology and a ploy to drive up artificial (as in not organic) demand for compute power to make investors richer while also impoverishing and endangering working class people. While you can say capitalism is much to blame, I don't think any socialist government actually needs a text slop machine to function compared to a imperialist state with a text slop machine.

AI has always been a term in computer science that's been co-opted by techbros in both China and the US to be a status symbol.

  • AI is haram

edit: This isn't a hot take.

China getting into AI is annoying, they shouldn't ape White people's useless technology. Hopefully socialism reveals how useless genAI is and it gets relegated into a party trick and they don't wreck anything important. I will bury myself in dogshit if socialism collapses because of ai slop.

My favorite thing to say to AI people is "no high speed rail?" Works every time.
