Websites blocking e-mail aliases
  • If you happen to be paying for iCloud storage, you could use their hide-my-email service for those rare accounts and have it send to your proton email (apple lets you use an external email to forward to). That's one of the big benefits of apple's alias solution; they are all in the icloud.com domain and no website would ever block that.

  • How OpenAI Hopes to Sever Its Nonprofit Roots
  • Reaching A.G.I. could also reshape OpenAI’s business. When that declaration is made, Microsoft loses its rights to use OpenAI’s technology, according to the investment contract it signed with OpenAI. If OpenAI severs its ties to Microsoft, it could consider partnerships with other tech giants.

Already, OpenAI’s for-profit company has used this potential declaration as leverage against Microsoft — warning that if Microsoft will not agree to better terms, the nonprofit might issue this declaration and void their entire agreement, according to a person familiar with the company’s negotiations.

That's pretty messed up. So whenever OpenAI says they've achieved AGI it's just a gonna be a lie.

  • Wow almost 9 years old, but I hadn't seen this before so thanks for posting.

  • What general price-range gift do you consider a "stocking stuffer" this year?
  • Socks are always a good stocking stuffer. Also candy, bathroom products, cards, etc.

  • Ukraine Asks if Telegram, Its Favorite App, Is a Sleeper Agent

About 70 percent of Ukraine's population uses Telegram as their main source of news, but the government is worried that the app is being used as a method of disinformation and spying by Russia. They are trying to pivot to apps like Signal instead, but it is difficult to break the habit of such a majority of the country.

WBZ glued Apple AirTags inside a number of Starbucks cups to track where they ended up.

I wasn't sure the best community on slrpnk to post this; but this one seemed pretty applicable.

Windows 11 market share falls despite Microsoft ad blitz | Windows 10, on the other hand, managed to grow its share of that market
  • This hasn't happened to me but probably because my computer doesn't support Windows 11 (it doesn't support TPM)

  • Unfederated lemmy instance, how to pre-subscribe new users to our main communities ?
  • I don't have an answer to your specific question, but honestly I think learning to subscribe to a community is a really important "tutorial" on using lemmy/reddit. Otherwise they might not understand how to get to each one. You also could just have them look at the local feed so they wouldn't even need subscriptions.

  • Private videoconferencing ?
  • I personally haven't used it yet but I believe you can do all this with Matrix (choose your client - probably Element).

  • Bluesky is booming in Japan — mainly for reasons other than U.S. politics
  • Seems to be mainly because Bluesky is just a better user experience.

Changes in terms of service regarding AI (artificial intelligence), changes in the block feature and the presence of so many bot-like ‘impression zombie’ accounts are viewed negatively by Japanese users

But, X is still incredibly important in Japan and Bluesky isnt a serious threat to it culturally right now.

X is still a major, major news source for Japanese users, so it really won't slow down anytime soon. Newer platforms like Threads or Bluesky really don't have any meaningful adoption or use for brand marketing in Japan — yet

  • Organic Maps not showing in list of car play apps. Does it not support?
  • I actually have not plugged it into the car yet. I thought I remembered apps showing up in the carplay settings immediately after downloading, but maybe that's not the case. I'll report back after I've tried.

  • Organic Maps not showing in list of car play apps. Does it not support?

Hi everyone. I recently downloaded Organic Maps and am interested in trying it out as an alternative to Google Maps. However, when I went into my CarPlay settings in my phone to put the app in a good location, it is not listed. I did some googling and it seems like Organic Maps should support CarPlay. Just checking for confirmation on that. Thanks!

When is it the right time to give up?
  • The japanese philosophy of Kintsugi may help you look at things differently. Impurities are what make us all unique. Nothing in nature is perfect.

  • ‘Thirsty’ ChatGPT uses four times more water than previously thought
  • Many data centres use water-based systems to cool the plant with towers evaporating the heat, like a huge perspiration system, which means that the water is lost. It also has to be drinking quality because impurities can damage the servers.

If anyone was curious like me.

  • Day 129 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I’ve been playing until I forget to post Screenshots
  • Wow that bug sounds wicked annoying. Sorry about that. I love uncharted 4. Since you're playing on crushing I assume you've already played it? I want to replay sometime soon. I haven't since it came out actually; I played twice in a row but haven't since. My main gripe with it (the most probably think of as a positive) is that there aren't enough combat encounters.

  • Any infinite group applies to this too. The group of integers, real numbers, etc. are infinite. Just add 1 👍
