  • Yet, within just a few months of being sworn in, Fertitta has allegedly complained to Trump about a swarm of self-styled Italian and American emissaries and makeshift middlemen eager to influence relations between Rome and Washington.

It's almost like we need an ambassador there to deal with these people.

  • I don't know, do you think Europe would intervene on our behalf just under article 5, personally?

I would like to think so, but I'm some internet rando speculating on some unlikely foreign policy so my opinion here is worth less than the electrons it's transmitting to your eyeballs.

  • If you are not happy with the speed of progress, “just” get a team, fork it, and do it yourself

Never understood this argument. Not everybody can be working on everything, and while Matrix is open source it's also got an official company maintaining it, so you'd have an uphill fight from the start. The obvious other choice is to use an alternative, which is what the author did by moving back to xmpp.

  • More realistically, Visa/Mastercard customer service declines during this protest period and 3 months from now everyone forgets about today's campaign.

Keep in mind that this started because of a small telecall campaign by said Australian fringe group. There's no reason the finance guys would have upset the status quo on their own. If a few hundred people could annoy them enough to do this, what makes you think thousands of people wouldn't impact them?

    Switching to a different card

As I noted, that guarantees financial death for the impacted game devs. Steam and Itch aren't just a point of sale, they're a discovery service. Wouldn't be surprised to hear 80-90% of sales for these devs come from a couple main platforms.

  • The thing is, once you've started a discussion, there's a case to be made that it's no longer just your data, but rather the entire post and comments is a new creation, something greater than the sum of its parts. At that point, is it fair to remove your bit, and devaluing the rest?

If someone wants to save a copy of my data, they have an option to do so before I delete my data, but not after.

An automated way to do so would effectively be to keep the data but unlink it from the account that created it, no?

  • The cost of your approach, is guaranteed financial failure for said devs, regardless of the outcome. To succeed, it would require enough users to change their purchase habits that finance companies would even notice. We all know the chances of that happening are miniscule. You'd be giving the crazies exactly what they want.

Mastercard/Visa doesn't give a fuck about your emails. Just hit them in the pocket book

Have you not been paying attention to the campaign? That's exactly what they're doing, they're tying up the customer support systems in a way that will be noticed and can't be ignored. It's having an instant effect on their bottom line since they'll have to be scheduling more shifts right now to deal with the increased workload. Nobody's suggesting emails.

  • pretty sure there's no actual regulations on it

That's what 'no distinction' means. Members have agreed to assist in case one of them are attacked, regardless of who's doing the attacking. There's a grey area if you can't make the case for which party being the definite aggressor, but if the US were invading it would be pretty damn obvious.

  • That requires more than just dropping a card. Especially when dealing with game libraries, platform availability is a pretty big deal for some people. And the net effect of just ignoring this situation and buying elsewhere, is that legitimate speech, and all games devs involved, are being extremely impacted. There's no way devs will be getting the same sales elsewhere as they are on Steam, so if this persists there will be financial pressure against devs of 'objectionable' games. And then we're back to the same situation where a fringe Australian group has decided what morals to hold to for the entire world.

  • My point is, NATO makes no distinction between being attacked by an outside party vs being attacked by a member. Other members are still legally obligated to provide assistance. What sort of legally binding alliance are you expecting, that isn't already covered by the preexisting agreements?
