New EU rules mean WhatsApp and Messenger must be interoperable with other chat apps. Here’s how that will work.

WhatsApp Chats Will Soon Work With Other Encrypted Messaging Apps

WhatsApp will soon make it possible to chat with people who use other messaging apps. It's revealed some more details on how that will work.

— Apps will need to sign an agreement with Meta, then connect to its servers.

— Meta wants people to use the Signal Protocol, but also says other encryption protocols can be used if they can meet WhatsApp's standards

— WhatsApp has been testing with Matrix in recent months, although nothing is agreed yet. Swiss app Threema says it won't become interoperable

  • Gotcha

Internet is somewhat restricted but only the most common sites are blocked

Renting requires ID - passport or Spanish ID, same with Internet or a SIM card

Transportation there’s no ID requirements on buses and trains

  • Personally, I’d expect it to be fine. There’s not a lot of CPU usage for those apps. The only part I see it potentially struggling is the file transfer (WiFi on the Zero W or Ethernet-over-USB).

Might be better to get a Pi 3b with Ethernet on board

  • We already have digital certificates to identify ourselves on government websites to access services.

Most likely the implementation will require sites to demand the cert for verification. What happens after that is the privacy creep
