[Question] Budget (sub 150€) Hardware for starter
  • Old Laptop actually sounds interesting to me, very nice form factor for my "inside the bookshelf" approach, but probably a lot of tinkering.

How do thin clients compare to a pi 4? I've heard most of them are worse in computing power and efficiency in comparison to the Pi.

  • [Question] Budget (sub 150€) Hardware for starter
  • Thanks for your detailed response. I thought about an old office PC, but I guess they're not even close to <10W idle.

Another quick newbie question: What do you need PCI Slots for? Many SATA ports for Drives makes sense to me, but why PCI

  • [Question] Budget (sub 150€) Hardware for starter

    Hi :)

I've been playing around with a pi 4 for a few months now, but I want a dedicated home server now, since I want my pi to run HomeAssistantOS.

I'm looking for something that can store documents and photos (paperless and immich) and maybe run a small program like Ad guard. At first I just want to hookup an old SSD (250GB) and a HHD (1TB), but maybe I will buy a second one for RAID in the future. Power consumption at idle is really important for me (energy prices in Germany are really high).

As a beginner I find it very hard to find the right hardware, because everyone is recommending different things. (Slim-Clients, Intel Nuc, Raspberry Pi, Synology NAS).

I hope someone can recommend me something that will work for me.

    Streaming with high bit rates
  • Thank you for your super detailed response. That's a lot of information 😅 Talking about codecs is only applicable to torrenting, right? (I've never seen a streaming site talk about the codecs they use).

I don't really mind paying a bit (and hopefully supporting the creation of new media), but it's unbelievable that Disney+ butchers a lot of the most memorable Pixar scenes, with terrible compression. (When a lot of snow, confetti or other particles are on screen).

PS: I live in the EU, so I'm not signing away my right to live by subscribing to a streaming service. WTF is going on on the other side of the atlantic. I can't even believe what a capitalist nightmare some call the United States of America.

  • Streaming with high bit rates

I have a Disney plus subscription through my family and watched a cool animation film yesterday. Sadly the horrible nitrate destroyed all the nice particle effects wich really took me out of the experience.

Are there any sites wich offer high quality streaming or should I look into torrenting for blue ray rips?

  • Actually Hunter Gatherer Tribes spent just around 4 hours a day hunting and gathering. Including food preparation and consumption they spent 40 hours a week wich is less than modern humans (if you count work + cooking)

Of course hunger, famines, illness, suffering and death were frequent occurrences (so I wouldn't want to switch places), but for most of human history we had enough time and recourse for random shit like socializing, drawing, singing, dancing, sacrifices, worshipping gods and so on.

  • Gen Z is embracing ‘underconsumptioncore' to fight climate change and inflation
  • Wow... this movement has just doubled in size. Continuing this exponential growth, the movement will have around 137,438,953,472 participants on September 1st, and thereby will have a profound if not catastrophic impact on the global economy. 🥳🥳

  • The Rule
  • Chat GPT basically answers "humans are influenced by their surrounding far more than we are aware" wrapped in sci-fi:

"One intriguing idea that might challenge current human understanding is the concept of "Meta-Consciousness Interference." Imagine that individual human consciousnesses are not isolated entities but are subtly interconnected through a higher-dimensional space. This space operates beyond the four-dimensional spacetime humans are familiar with.

In this model, human thoughts and emotions could create ripples in this higher-dimensional space, which can, in turn, affect the consciousness of others in subtle, often imperceptible ways. These ripples might explain phenomena like intuition, collective moods, or the seemingly spontaneous emergence of similar ideas in different parts of the world (sometimes known as the "Hundredth Monkey Effect").

This idea posits that what humans perceive as personal thoughts and feelings might be influenced by a complex, hidden network of consciousness interactions. Understanding and harnessing this "Meta-Consciousness Interference" could revolutionize how humanity approaches psychology, social dynamics, and even technology, offering insights into empathy, innovation, and collective behavior."

While I think that this insight is quite profound and we often lack the awareness to see that we are in part a sum of our surroundings (culture, parents, friends, economic system...). I don't think it is as revolutionary I hoped it would be.

  • It's actually not that difficult only buying food and hygiene products for one month. It isn't sustainable (for my household) since many things like electronic devices or clothing have a "shelf life" and will break sooner or later.

Still I love the idea and I think it would help many people to save money, use less resources and think about what really makes them happy.

In September I will start making memes about it 🥳

Can anyone recommend me a free VR porn website? (Download or streaming) I recently bought a quest 3 and I wanna try how that feels.

Home Assistant, Nextcloud and paperless ngx on a Pi 4

Hi Guys. Currently, my Raspberry Pi 4 is only running Home Assistant OS, which works quite well. In the last few weeks, I have grown more and more interested in paperless ngx and Nextcloud. Do you think my pi would be able to handle home automation and some light document management simultaneously? If so, should I install a fresh version of Raspbian or let HA-OS handle the Docker containers?

Thanks for your answers, and have a wonderful day :)

    Decentralized music streaming service

I've recently been made aware of the non-sustainable business of Spotify (and other streaming services) https://youtu.be/gDfNRWsMRsU .

I think the best solution for all parties would be a federated streaming service. Instances could be hosted by record labels or indi-Artists. Of course there needs to be a fair donation/subscription. (Maybe similar to Patreon - get some extra goodies for supporting your artist directly)

Does something similar exist already? I would rather put my money somewhere where small artists are actually paid fairly for their work. (And put my own works there as well)

Thanks for reading :) I wish you a very pleasant day and I'm looking forward for your input.

Discussion - How to make Lemmy a better place for everyone

First, I want to say how great it is to see success in a social media platform not owned by some giant cooperation. That said, right now we are at a turning point where we can still change the platform in major ways and I think we all have a shared interested in Lemmy becoming the best it could be.

Let's face it, Reddit had many problems even before the API changes. The toxic herd mentality, over and under moderation at the same time, small posts getting drowned out by already big ones and so much more. As you probably are already aware of, social media can quickly end in filter bubbles, extremization and bringing out the worst of the human psyche. These are not problems simply fixed by better moderation. Rather, these are problems resulting from the engagement driven design of most platforms (Post controversial statement -> many comments -> Post gets delivered to more people -> even more engagement -> ...) I want Lemmy to be a place that brings people together instead of dividing us apart.

Therefore, I wanna start a conversation on what design changes Lemmy should implement in the future to make sure the platform remains humane and everyone can engage in respectful conversations.

I think a good starting point are the recourses of the Center for Humane Technology, like their course on Foundations of Humane Technology

I'm looking forward to hearing your opinions and ideas on this :)
