I took the textures from Halo Combat Evolved and imported them into blender and enable r(ule)tracing

  • Ruletracing differs from raytracing in that instead of casting rays, it uses rulers.

  • the deepbump addon has a button to convert normal maps to depth maps, would help with the parallax

    • oh nice, yeah the original textures are just bump maps, I plugged them into the normal map node and it looked good enough so I just went with it, but I've heard about how bump maps =/= normal maps and it can cause problems, so that might be a nice addon for this kind of stuff

  • It kinda hurts to look at, and is kinda beautifully ominous at the same time

    • Yeah Halo CE comes from the wonderful era where bump mapping was new and a free way to add detail without adding polys, has a beautiful technical aesthetic, kinda like Half-Life 2
