RMT boss says getting rid of Tories is his ‘number one priority’ but he will not give a Labour government a ‘free pass’
Lynch says that his 'number one priority' is getting the Tories out and that, realistically, that means putting Starmer in:
“That doesn’t mean that we give him carte blanche or a blank cheque to do whatever he likes.”
“I support getting rid of this government and I’m a realist – the only government we’re going to get as an alternative will be led by Keir Starmer, so people have to deal with that, people have got to grow up a bit in some senses.
“That’s the government we’re going to get and we have to make the best of that opportunity.”
He’s right. Get rid of the Tories, then apply pressure to Labour. It’s the only viable option. If anyone has any suggestions on a realistic alternative I’d love to hear it.
There isn't a realistic alternative. But you don't have to pretend you like it. It is important to make it very clear that you do not. The least worst option is not going to evolve into a better option all of its own accord.
Lynch is saying you have to vote to keep the Tories out and you have to hold Labour's feet to the fire afterwards.
Pressure Labour to back LD on non FPTP voting and then turn up the pressure when they're in so that the elections are at least remotely less "pick the big guy you hate the least"
This is my feeling on things.
Get labouring.
Then turn the screws. Get a 3rd party into a position where labour could face an existential threat under FPTP, and use that to drive a better voting system.
I want to see a parliament made up of many smaller parties making compromises and concessions, rather than a block just whipping through what they can get away with.
