Maritime NZ files charge against KiwiRail following Kaitaki mayday call
Nearly 900 people were on Interislander Kaitaki when it lost power.
I was one of the people on board Kaitaki when this happened, I'm a bit surprised it went as far as charges being laid though.
I'd guess the charges aren't really about the breakdown or the mayday call, but are about the inadequate processes that led to that situation.
Hard to know without more info though.
I've read the interim report on the breakdown, the component that failed was 11 years old, and should have been replaced at five years. It was also kept in storage for too long before being installed.
And this wasn't a one off, either. There were a significant number of components at a similar stage in their life.
So yes, definitely a process issue.
