It’s a reference to the fascists on hexbear and their friends, who all call themselves left and make up a large part of Lemmy. For them, left is anything that’s anti-USA.
Aha I have encountered some of those yes. It's why I left lemmy.lm (whose communities seem to be highly participated in by hexbear). I thought they were LGBTQI friendly but I quickly learned otherwise (Especially the T part seemed unwelcome there). I see what you mean by anti-USA too. I like beehaw a lot more so far, thank you.
It’s sadly far wider-spread, it’s why I left the broader fediverse, returned to Reddit, and joined beehaw directly without subscribing to any external communities.
Look, we all know that Hexbear is questionable. There's a reason we defederated from them. But let's not go around throwing terms like "fascism" around like they don't mean anything. We all know Hexbear is full of Marxist-Leninist trolls. We know.
I mean, there's also a reason that Marxism-Leninism and Stalinism was historically referred to as "red fascism": Soviet ultra-nationalism, fetishization of violence, authoritarianism. They were very cosy with the Nazis when it came to carving up Poland between them.
Yeah they're internet trolls that picked up the mantle, it's not like they've done the work do deal with their internal issues.
Still, I wouldn't understand why a tankie would be supporting today's Russia. There is really no pretense of ideology left. The country is basically run by the mafia whose only ideology is "TAKE". They don't even pretend to be something else anymore.
Arguably the soviet union was like this too. I'm socialist economically (and progressive socially) but I wouldn't consider the soviet union socialist. It was really just a veiled dictatorship.
Because Russia is anti-West, and that's literally all that matters to them. Doesn't matter what Russia, China, North Korea, etc do. The West is evil so they get a pass. Horribly stupid logic.
He's talking about the tankies that keep defending a fascist regime with a colonialist imperialistic mindset. My prediction is that either they are raging homophobes themselves like papa Stalin or they will ignore it.
These people see the world through: "USA bad". It's the only thing they believe. So if the US criticize a place, like Russia, then it must be good because the US is bad.
Is the US fucking awful? Yes. Is this a completely moronic way of looking at the world? Also yes.
There's also the bizarre phenomena of "leftist" people who support Russia, Iran, etc.
I was on a date once (gay) and he would shit-talk the US, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, etc. for being capitalistic. Then in the same breath, talk about how he wanted to go to Iran and Russia.
The political spectrum a circle. Go far enough around, and it loops back to itself right around fascism and communism. Plus, all the crazy shit like anti-vaxxers and all that bullshit. Killing minorities is a favorite pasttime of both groups, throughout WW2 and the postwar, red/lavender scare era. And it's starting back up again.
Conservatives hate gays, so conservatives are bad.
Conservatives love capitalism, so capitalism is bad.
The west is mostly capitalistic, so I hate the west.
The west sanction Iran and Russia, so they must be good.
I think it's better to draw the line at hating controlling abusive people, rather than geopolitical boundaries.
I avoid visiting fascist sites, I had enough of that when I selfhosted, and before I blocked hexbear, and saw the cheerleading for civilians being bombed in Ukraine. But good to know they are not totally lost.
Shit. That's what I was afraid of. I guess feddit.nl isn't the perfect neutral it once was. I specifically chose a home instance that would allow me to access Hexbear and some of the other more extreme instances. Is there a decent migration tool? I am established on this account and am a mod on a few communities. I don't want to lose Hexbear or all my posts and positions.
I'm on my mobile so it's difficult to tell as the instances list is so large on feddit.nl, but I don't think your instance is blocking hexbear. It looks like hexbear has an allowed list of instances and it's not a large list.
The best bet would be to create an account on hexbear if you want to follow it closely, but keep your existing account.
I don't want to follow closely, just occasionally dive in for fun perspective spectating. But maybe you're on the right path with the Hexbear allow list. I should see if I can get Hexbear to allow feddit.nl.
