Turnout is ridiculously low for the general election because everyone just assumes the Democrat will win. I’m not sure taking votes from Adams even matters. How many people are actually motivated to turn out for fucking Cuomo or the incredibly unpopular current mayor, in an election that famously has low turn out?
The most likely effect Cuomo will have imo is spooking people to turn out for Mamdani. I’m pretty sure his entering the race as a third party candidate will turn out a lot of young people to vote against him and almost no one to vote for him.

You’re missing the point. Vote Blue No Matter Who means that competitors are supposed to step aside after a primary and support the winning candidate. In practice, this means they expect the losing progressive candidate to suck it up and support the establishment democrat. Now that a progressive has won the primary, the establishment democrat is refusing to step aside.
So yes, he technically won’t have a D next to his name, but it is well understood that he is an arm of the political machine that is refusing to respect the will of the voters.

Realistically, they wont rig the election, Mamdani will win and become Mayor, then City Council is gonna block every policy that he wants to implement. Unless there are 26 progressives in City Council that are aligned with Mamdani, the legislature is gonna be the real roadblock.

This is it. In a normal Dem/MAGA election, a single spoiler can make a huge difference, but in this case, we have one actual candidate, and three spoilers. None of them are a viable candidate. It's likely that the moron vote will all get split by Cuomo, Adams, and Sliwa, leaving anyone with half a brain to vote for Zohran.
I still don't understand how this is supposed to work even in principle. Clearly the sort of people who voted in the primary prefer Mamdani by a wide margin. Is Cuomo expecting to be elected by people who didn't care enough to vote in the primary but do care enough to vote for him despite the fact that he's not the Democratic candidate? nyc primaries have terrible voter turnout, somewhere between 20-30% of registered dem voters in the city. Mamdani did get a record number of voters out to the polls but Cuomo’s camp is thinking they can reinvigorate the other 70% of dems who sat this primary out. So yes, Cuomo is banking on this but I hope his highly paid pol consultants are very wrong.

We have elections over who will be the candidate for each party called Primaries. Mamdani won the primary for the democratic party.
Cuomo is now saying that although he lost to Mamdani in the primary, he's going to run independent of parties.

Can there be multiple independents? As in, those who got neither the dem or rep nominations, but still want to run in the general election, do they all end up on the general ballot, or will ll they have to face each other in a semi-primary first?
Mamdani won the primary election. In the US parties don't choose their candidates for elections (in b4 "but superdelegates!") like you see in other electoral systems where an internal party committee selects a candidate list. So this election was determining who was going to be the Democratic candidate for the actual election.
But New York has some weird fusion laws that allow people to run on multiple party lines so Cuomo, even though he lost the Democratic nomination, can still run in the general election.
It should be noted that parties can choose their candidates without an election if they really want to, but it's not a good idea if they want a chance to win. See the most recent presidential election for an example.
Parties don't choose candidates other than the presidential election, which they could change the rules, but in the aftermath of 2016 presidential election, the Democratic Party have changed the rules and have since forbidden superdelefates from voting the first round and haven't changed it since (as far as I know). If the first round fails to gain a 50%+1 majority, then superdelegates can participate. (I think republicans still have superdelegates tho) For non-presidential primaries, primaries are run by the states, governed by state laws, not a party's rules. Anyone can just register as either a Democrat or Republican and run.
The main powers of a political party is not vote tamering, votes themselves aren't actually being tampered with (for the most part), they just have unlimited funds to buy propaganda to make their status quo candidates have more support.
