Any noticed the hatred and weirdness towards plural folks here (on lemmy)?

More than once we have come across some ill informed armchair psychologist who tried to tell us we weren't real or a coping mechanism or some other opinion they pulled out of their ass. Anymany else experienced this?

The other thing we see often is 'jokes' about us using we which derails the whole conversation as we calmly explain what we are, but the thing is it never returns to the conversation afterwards and invariably the above group show up and are unnecessarily mean, their full willful ignorance on display.

Anymany else experienced any of these scenarios? If so how do y'all deal with it?

  • Have I noticed it? Unfortunately yes. Like, I don't see a lot of Plural presence on Lemmy, but the few times I do usually have someone taking unnecessary shots against Plural systems.

    How do I deal with it? Depends on the account I'm on. Fighter likes to tag troublemakers, while most others prefer blocking. Wish I could do more, but I'm not very confrontational even on my most confrontational account.

    I'm sorry y'all are facing such negativity here on Lemmy. I hope things get better and people more understanding of the Plural community.

  • we haven't experienced much of this, which i'm very thankful for.

    i assume it's the same thing that always happens. people have such little exposure to anyone like us, that they assume we're crazy. queer people for example are a bit more accepted now, because we're "more common".

    maybe it has sometheing to do with how humans like to be in groups and tribes n' stuff. when you tell someone that you experience something differently which is fundamental to their life (and they can't relate to that), they have that hostile fear response: to protect their "normal" group, and keep others out.

    i remember before we became a system, a friend told us about their plural experiences and i didn't even consider for a moment that it could be real, because that would be questioning something which (at the time) was fundamental to how i understood myself and everyone else. being a singlet was like the law of the universe to me, and i imagine homophobes and others feel that way as well. i basically responded with a "yeah sure, ok buddy", and i wish i didn't, because they never spoke about that again.

    ok, i kinda rambled a bit too long there lol. maybe that's a useful perspective.

      Yeah, people are like that.

      Yeah, humans sure are strange like that. Glad we aren't human and so do not have to live by their current ideas of how to behave.

      Oof, that sounds difficult, we think that the problem is there is a lack of curiosity instilled in entities from a young age and thus they behave like you say, very sectarian, defensive and well... incurious.

      We understand all this, yet find it heartbreaking that many do not wish to learn and instead spread their hate and uninformed opinions everywhere.

      The world would be so much better with more curiosity and taking the time to learn, plus more love and less hate.

      • i definitely agree. curiosity and a willingness to learn are huge green flags imo.

        i often wish that there was a way to just make everyone be nicer to each other, but sadly i think that doesn't exist. the only way i see to improve our situation is to slowly fight back against everything that got us here. if i can make one person/entity's [1] day better, maybe they'll do the same for another :3

        [1]: are these equivalent, or is 'person' too much of a human thing?

  • I'm just a mono, but I think the culprits of this negativity (I have not seen personally though) are those two things:

    -the silly "trend" on YouTube where people exploit this so much just to be special. Where you watch a minute and be like "this ain't like this you stupid brat".

    -the confusion of people regarding to pronouns. Especially if they hear "we". As if they're not already struggling with all those neopronouns. "We" is something known despite still ungraspable to them in this context.

    It's just my personal observation and opinion though. I lack the data to form a professional opinion...

    • Just so you know, we think the correct term is singlet, if you mean you're not plural.

      Yeah, it's a shame because we would happily explain but it's exhausting when assholes who don't know what the fuck they are talking about show up and show their asses to all and sundry.

      Fair enough.

  • Until now I didn't know this was a thing. I kind of wish I could go back to not knowing.
