Why was JD Vance meeting with Pope Francis anyway?

I know the fun answers (and choose to believe them a little), but what was the real (cover) story?

Vance claims to be Catholic, probably fishing for approval from the Pope to justify some warped ideals he spouts to the American people. Typical diplomatic shite.
- In the US there's a strain of Catholicism that is far-right and hyperpolitical, they hate the Pope and love Trump. Vance is a fairly recent convert who got into it thanks to Thiel.

Well, the Pope died just a few hours later, I think you have your answer.

  I thought it was lizz truss. Though to be fair with how often they change their prime minister I wouldn't blame anyone for getting them mixed up

  Can you be more specific? Catholics, the pope himself, Vance? Really hard to narrow it down.

He's out doing what I am sure he thinks of as diplomatic meetings. The pope might be the leader of a criminal organisation, but he is generally thought of as a legitimate world leader. JD spoke with the Italian PM while he was there as well, and I think he has moved on to India now where he will meet with various politicians and attend cultural events.
VPs do this kind of thing all the time, it just seems weird because no one can take him seriously.

Vance was the kid who got bullied all the time, and now he needs validation every day, all day long.
