Sorry if this is disappointing to any of you, but we have so few members here now, and so much stuff is still broken, that we don't feel as though continuing is worth it.
However, /r/Piracy has their own Lemmy, and everything is working well on it, so we're going to start directing people there instead, as they share our same values and goals. Thanks for the support guys and again I am sorry this didn't work out. We wanted it to, but it just didn't.
I'd like to apologize to everyone for doing this on such short notice and not being able to get it stable. It's been a fun ride but it's clear that it ended a long time ago. I'll see you all on db0.
Some more specifics:
The instance will lock registration and community creation on October 1st. There doesn't seem to be a way to disable posts and comments rn so ig it'll be left on. I'll be keeping the instance up for the foreseeable future for archival reasons.
It was just a file permissions issue on my end after switching to Ansible, ran chmod -R a=rwx where pictrs was located. (This probably won't help with db0.)
Ahoy all, one of the admins from dbzer0 here. Sorry to hear you are shutting down, but I'd like you to know that you are all very welcome to join our instance if you are looking for a new home. I've seen a couple of you signing up already, so welcome aboard!
Sorry to hear about your troubles. I know you were still having federation issues lately. This stuff isn't easy unfortunately, even for professional sysadmins.
I am glad you chose to relocate to our little cove. We'll be glad to accept all peeps looking for a new haven.
Unfortunate... I assume the loss of the old instance is probably what contributed to the decline in users here. I used your instance a good bit on and off while it lasted, it was great, easily one of the best on Lemmy imo. Rest in peace and thanks for your great work and dedication running it. 🫡
Yeah, had my first account there and enjoyed it, but afterwards the closure and the down times after return leading to not knowing when the instance was up led to it dying. But, I'm glad the spirit lives for fmhy on db0.
Very sad :( I know this has been a challenge, and I really hope you guys reconsider and don't give up. This is one of the only more free speech focused instances that hasn't turned into a far right wingnut cesspool or borderline-racist bullshit.
FWIW I'm happy to donate some crypto to the beer fund if such a thing was created... Things have been going well for a week or two since the restart, at least I haven't noticed any problems. I hope you guys don't give up <3
Thank you but money wouldn't help. (Unless you had like $100 to hire a specialist and figure out the federation problems.) Not to mention the main reason for switching is the amount of people on db0 compared to here (and we both essentially did the same thing, mainly piracy focused)
I'd be happy to donate $100 via crypto if it meant keeping the instance up.
I can also help troubleshoot federation problems although it's not my primary area of expertise... if there's some sanitized logs or something I can look at them...
So it sounds like money might help then? I could also pitch in a little, I don't mind giving back some if you're willing to maintain the instance. $100 is a pretty low bar to reach. If you are interested in maintaining this Lemmy, then perhaps spend a little time to plan out what resources you would need. Be it volunteer efforts, research, or cash. The community may well step up if you make a post detailing your needs.
Of course, it is entirely reasonable to discontinue the instance if it is too much of a headache or no longer what you prefer to do! I'm just pointing out that if you can present a clear concept of the help you need, you may find that it is available.
Well shit... I guess this was lemmy for me then, dbzer0 already blocked mujico (can't blame them for doing it) and I'm tired of looking for instances every time something in the fediverse happens.
Sorry to ask, but why you had so many problems with this new instance? I mean, the older domain was good and had very little issues, so why here was different?
I'm one of those who used to had a user on lemmy.fmhy.ml and then I migrated to lemm.ee after the shutdown. I wanted to go back but every time I came here something was indeed broken :_(
The old instance had its own problems (mainly pictrs not working) but its mainly because I was the only active sysadmin on this new instance. The old one had multiple and while I had some help from db0 and a few others, I was still essentially the only person maintaining it.
