Pure ideology, man. They fantasize about anarchy and chaos where the world becomes a complete free-for-all and everyone kills each other for scraps, where you as the big man stay awake with your shotgun all night to protect your sleeping family. It comes from this hyper-individualistic mindset which isn't unique to the US, but a lot more common there than in other places I think.
Of course, you just have to take one look at the real world to realize it's horseshit. Societies have collapsed before. Natural disasters have destroyed cities. Wars have destroyed entire countries. Gaza is being razed to the ground right now and it hasn't turned into an "every man for himself" scenario because that's just not how humans work. People survive by communicating and coordinating with others. That's why we rule the planet. We can designate one guy to be the doctor, one guy to farm crops for everyone and one guy to build shelters instead of everyone individually being mediocre at all 3. Being so obsessed with independence from society is idiotic. Your best bet for survival in a crisis is joining and/or rebuilding a community as quickly as possible.
Wonder if there's any survival channels about building a community and helping each other rather than being a lone wolf and dying after a week because you accidentally shit your intestines out after eating spoiled meat.
