I guess the goal is to profit from confusion, and it seems like it's working because even people on Lemmy are tricked by it. Consider the average consumer.
I assume we saw the same one but it wasn't an 'official' controller, it was a 3rd party one specifically designed with steam in mind. Made by a company called Hori. Valve hasn't announced another steam controller yet.
Xbox controllers work with windows with pretty much zero configuration. Either use USB or the appropriate receiver dongle. This probably contributes a lot to it's popularity.
Also the older and newer style controllers likely all just report as Xbox controllers and the wired 360 controllers are dirt cheap

I just hope they make an upgraded Stram Controller.
I bought it when it came out. Been using it ever since. Still holds up and legit feels so great in your hands. I really have no idea what I will do the day mime breaks.
Think you can maybe get to work on making the official dock usable in any way? you know. if you get around to it. if you're feelin froggy.
really getting tired of the complete lack of support for those of us who use USB dongles with the official steam dock.
(apologies if this comes off as too angry. I just had to plug my controller dongle into 3 different USB ports until it finally decided to start working)
