What is this thing?
- Is there a name for this sort of object? I need something like this, but don't know what to type into the webs
I'm going to convert my computer chair from pneumatic to static. I'm currently using plastic clasps that are held on with jubilee clips, but they're not great and need replaced (I'm a heavy lad). A sturdy metal version would be better.
I'm assuming the plumbing world would have something like this, but the language of the plumber is arcane and inaccessible to regular goombas like me. What do I type into the search box?
Cheers!
- Very small valve part?
Small metal object with clip on top. Clip spins around the object body and can be attracted to a magnet (so made of steel probably). Object body does not react to magnet (so made of brass maybe). Cone shaped tip seems to be made of some kind of plastic.
Found this in my back yard, probably from something I was working on, but it doesn't look familiar.
What is this thing? (Identification may help me fix something I don't know is broken!)
- Just for counting? For speed also?
Yeah I know these are used for counting vehicles but can they also be used for detecting vehicle speed?
Description: two pneumatic hoses, affixed to a road. They lead to a box that's locked to a telephone pole. Location is southern California. On a minor artery road.
Doubtful that it's to survey if a new stop sign is needed since the next street is minor, dead ends into this one and already has a stop sign. The next intersection with another minor artery already has a stop sign.
Extremely doubtful that a traffic light is being considered since there isn't anywhere near the amount of traffic to justify one.
This is located on a slope. Many cars speed down here. That's why I'm wondering about speed sensing by this device.
- Nest of eggs in garden in SoCal
I’ve seen lizards running around in the garden but these seem pretty big imo like 1-2cm
I’ve also seen a 4ft long California king snake
- What is thing (connector) thing?
This is outside my apartment building, next to the car park. Is it a connector for a hose of some kind?
- I found this bug in my couch
A couple of months ago I purchased a couch and a couple of weeks ago I purchased some covers. Anyone knows what is this bug?
- I found a bunch of these crawling around inside my garage. What is this Bug?
They seem to spin some kind of silk everywhere they go. They seem to be no longer than about 4 mm. I noticed them crawling up things and then dropping down on a line of silk. I've started catching them by putting little sticks up in the air attached everywhere that I find them. They tend to gather at the top of the stick for easy rapture by vacuum.
- Any more info on these slippers?
They are obviously New England Patriot slippers. They appear official as they have the NFL hologram and were sold by FOCO UK
I would like to know more about the year they were sold and any other info. Google searches, reverse image searches yielded no match unfortunately.
- A torture device
This is probably something for spit cooking, but looks like it could have been an amazing torture device lol
- Picture of a thing, but what is the thing?
Sorry for the bad quality.
My grandfather had this in his office. He worked as a computer engineer so I initally thought it was a zoomed-in picture of a computer chip or something, but maybe it is something large.
He's not alive anymore so I can't ask him. If somebody can help me out, that would be great.
- I took apart a giant projection TV and there were a bunch of these lining the screen mount.
I feel like they probably have something to do with light level detection or infrared signal receiving but I genuinely have no idea. They could just as likely be part of the sound system for all I know.
- What is this yellow box like device from the early 90s?
As seen very briefly in the movie Weekend at Bernie's II (1993), what is the yellow box like thing this lady is carrying? Camera? Maybe, but what make or model?
- What is this pink railroad tie for?
Stenciling says "6 & 7TH / PDE & 3RD" It's the only pink tie on this track.
- Found this when we were cleaning out a family member's basement. I don't know anything about who owned it other than that it was a family member from a few generations back.
There's a patent number on the smaller of the blades near the hinge (2037943) that led me to a US patent from 1936 but it didn't tell me a lot about this particular knife. Any information on time period, brand, model, cleaning/restoring, etc is helpful. Thanks!
Additional notes:
- I cleaned off a decent amount of rust with some soap and WD-40 but the inner workings are still pretty messy
- The yellow layer on the handles is peeling off at the ends
Update: thank you all so much for the information! I've gotten a lot of information and leads on the knife. Still nothing definite on brand but you're probably right that it's a carbon steel blade with an ivory handle from about the 1950s. I'll be tending to it properly with your information on proper cleaning and sharpening of a knife like this. I'll post another update if I find anything more definite on brand/origin. Thanks again!
- What's this found buried behind back door?
Behind a house in Texas built a apx 1961. My 5 year old dug up the discovery.
- What animal does this tooth come from?
My dad says if I can work out what this tooth is from, I can have the rest of the skull. He knows I'll ask the internet... More pics in the comments.
- What is this gel like thing?
I found this gel like thing on a beach in Malaga. It seems like they are connected in chains, and it looks like some of them are pulsating. Could they be from a squid of some sort? Here's a video of it pulsating
- What movie is this?

I was on the StairMaster machine and couldn't figure out how to turn off the TV because I hate TV so I was flipping channels and I like cartoons. This is cute. What is it?
- [SOLVED] Mounted on motorway partitioner in Cyprus
All along the motorway these things are mounted on the crash barrier between the lanes. There's one crash barrier for each direction of traffic and only one of them has these things mounted.
There's a couple of different colors, the darker ones fewer, no idea if that is on purpose or coincidence. There's some with white and red stripes at regular intervals.
I can't figure the purpose of these, does anyone know?
- Some kind of light? Reflector? Any ideas?
Metal looking inside triangle with round corners, red transparent same triangle with round corners shape outside like you would see on a bike, back has screws and a circle where something could fit inside for a battery or something? https://imgur.com/TCLtSme https://imgur.com/Unl4Ph0 https://imgur.com/qzRwkum https://imgur.com/hzo9nO2
- The rocking chair in this photo [Likely Solved]
I remember it played a nursery rhyme like a music box when both armrests were gripped.
That’s my sister and I visiting my great-grandmother in her infirmary in *1975. The chair wasn’t meant for visitors, but for children housed in the infirmary.
The chair had metal armrests that acted like actuators, and a metal box under the seat that played nursery rhyme songs like a music box when both armrests were gripped and the chair rocked.
Was this a common thing, perhaps mass-produced, or just something jerry-rigged by some guy?
Have you seen anything like this? Thanks!
(Sorry for reposting; my post went wrong last time.)
- Found in the floor of my basement, about 10 inches down. House was built in 1954.
No idea what this is or what the letters might be.
- Found this lodged in my cat's tail. It was well healed over by the time we found it.
See pics, found this thing well healed in my cat's tail. Came out with no resistance and no bleeding. Looks like a tip to something, but not sure. Cat is less than 6 months old. Thoughts? The grooves you see are from my pliers. It's hollow and seems to be aluminum or some other soft metal.
Edit:
Looks like this is pretty unanimously solved. Bit of backstory (not that you asked)- neighbor got got 2 kittens in May/June for his daughter. They're freaking adorable so whenever they wandered over to our house, we gave them lots of attention. They had been spending more and more time camped out on our porch furniture in the past month and then I found this just today. I'm going to talk to the guy and see what's up.
I'm concerned they are only interested in animals while they're small and cute because last year they had a young dog that's no longer there, this is the second pair of kittens they've had this year (one of the first pair I still see sulking around at night, but I'm pretty sure it's feral now. No idea what happened to number 2), and now they have a new puppy again.
Thanks all!
Minor second edit: I made a mistake about their pets. The first dog mentioned above was actually the house next to the neighbors in question. Those neighbors had moved, which is why the dog is no longer here.
- What is this chimney piece?
Duravent chimney kit for woodburning stove. This pieces center fits perfectly around the triple wall chimney pipe for the roof and the square outer part is slightly larger than the ceiling box that penetrates through ceiling and roof. This is referenced nowhere in the super detailed instructions. It is not the flashing or the storm collar already have both those.
Solved* Attic insulation shield, not necessary in my application
