  • Most of those firearm deaths aren't school shootings. Sending your kid to play at a friend's house where the parents have guns is a reasonable concern. Being afraid to send your kid to school every day because of a mass shooter is much less reasonable.

  • can't even safely walk alone in public during the night or safely send your kid to school

This isn't true, the media just makes it look that way. The instances of school shooting are very dramatic, but statistically, your kid is in more danger on the drive to school than from a school shooting.

  • It's simpler code to re-download the file than retrieve what cached version may or may not exist in memory or on disk. Developers often like to keep code simple at the expense of some kinds of efficiency, like this.

An image is usually small enough to be downloaded in no time on a fast connection, which is what developers usually have and don't stop to think that others might not have.

A video is probably being streamed so earlier segments may no longer be present locally.

  • I know too much about how ad tech works. I've written code to de-anonymize all the data Google leaks through bid requests. Not individual credit card transactions, but enough to make me want nothing to do with them.

Ignorance is bliss as far as credit card companies go, I tell myself they sell anonymized transactions as csv dumps that aren't tied to cookies etc. It's probably worse than that. But if I really want to be anonymous, I pay cash.

  • I'd hate to be insecure enough to feel threatened about being married to a much more famous or successful woman. There's no shame in the world knowing her name and not mine. I can still be a good person and be good at my job in obscurity.

  • There's nothing wrong with sequels. There's only so much worldbuilding and character development you can do in 2 hours. It's a cool thing that a movie can start in an established world and not have to spend so much screen time building it from scratch.

Of course there are lazy and bad sequels, but there's nothing inherently bad about them and it's become too big of a meme to write them off reflexively.

  • (1) That logic doesn't stop people from working independently at one of many different other trades, and (2) sex work if legalized would gravitate towards a corporate vs. independent breakdown of jobs just like other trades. It's not like porn stars aren't making money for the "owning class."

  • Streaming absolutely does have unskippable ads. Not every ad on every service, but they're being introduced and will eventually become the norm as people won't have a choice about it. Long term, they will not leave a penny on the table.

Meanwhile I've never seen an unskippable ad on a bluray, just the occasional 10 second FBI warning that can't be skipped.

  • 10 or more years ago I would have said yes. But in this current version of capitalism, any powerful new technology will be used to benefit the very rich only, at the expense of the rest of us. It will hurt us more than help us at this moment.
