  • XBOX has seen the writing on the wall. People that want a console want a PlayStation. Everyone else wants a Steam deck or a PC and everyone else wants a switch.

But Game Pass makes all of that irrelevant. With game pass they don't have to sell hardware at all which always involves taking a loss on hardware.

I figure the next thing we are going to see from them is a thin client that can stream games from XBOX Live+ Me Edition. For 39.99 a month you get Xbox Live and Game Pass and your games get streamed directly from Microsofts datacenter. On the other side, Game Pass for PC will be 30 for local play and 40 to stream and then in 2026 the Xbox handheld will launch which will be a Qualcomm AV1 decoder/Wifi Chip with an X on it that starts at $199, and includes 6 months of Game pass+.

This is the future they've been waiting for since The Xbox 360 Elite.

  • I never knew that about TOS but it now makes a lot of things make a lot of sense.

Also everyone beware, it's a TV Tropes link. Maybe save this post and come back to it on a long car ride...

  • What do you mean? Its easy!

    Teams White and Purple=hotmail

Teams Purple and White=365 for business

    Teams Lavender (new)=Electron App

Teams Mauve (with Knuckles)=Teams except you are talking exclusively to Copilot AI

Teams Royal Purple (360 Edition)= Used by the Kansas City Royals baseball team

Teams Sky-Blue and White (Me)=Skype for Business

    Teams Periwinkle= Codename for Slack

  • I think a lot of enthusiasts miss out on this point. Its trivial for me to install a Linux distro or custom windows software that's fully managed my controller input but my buddies that have PlayStation s would panic if they encountered a bios screen or a config file.

There's a market for steam machines but they need to be basically a steam deck with a power supply, an HDMI output and a controller or it will be a non-starter for most people.

  • I had a version of this in 2005 or so. 200 games was, of course, quite a stretch.

Imagine a 3 lane avoid the traffic car game (1) and the same thing with a spaceship (2) and also a man running (3).

Or breakout (1) and breakout but the paddle is at the top of the screen (2).

Mine didn't even have the calculator. :(

  • Another casualty of the Warner/Discovery clusterfire it seems.

Not that Rooster Teeth were bastions of well-run businesses but still. If you have a favorite Warner or Discovery movie or show better get the DVD before its too late.

  • That was absolutely their plan all along.

If they wanted to do time-based discounts, they could just blast a 10% off coupon to every app user in a specific geographic area.

Plus they get the bonus of user data when people sign up for the app that they can sell to the government leverage for non-industry profit streams.

    True disgusting profiteering.

  • I was genuinely convinced they offered 10gig service in some markets. Doesn't surprise me that its all marketing nonsense.

Just a tip for anyone who wants to know, if you have Comcast business internet they'll tell you you have to use their modem but, you can swap it out with a 3rd patty modem and use the live chat service to get it activated. Then you can send back their modem for free at a ups store. Every salesperson will tell you its not possible but it absolutely is.
