Qualcomm CEO says that the next version of Windows is due in mid 2024 - place your bets on Windows 11 24H2 or Windows 12
  • My opinion is that copilot is the focus for 24. Microsoft has lots of development and marketing around copilot and how it works in 11, Edge, Bing, M365, and all the other Microsoft Graph yada yada fancy apps stuff. Launching 12 now would be an unnecessary distraction away from all copilot investments.

What fun things can I do with an M.2 SSD and 2x4GB ram?
  • Fanless PC as an OPNsense router. Probably somewhere between $100-$500 USD for the chassis and remaining parts depending on what you want it to do and how fancy you want to go.

  • SSD keeps going read only
  • Spinrite was originally just a diagnostic tool. It will probably give you more details than necessary or you know what to do with.

The problem with SSD’s and diagnostics is SSD’s have a controller preforming all kinds of wizardry and witchcraft between the flash memory and the motherboard. This is because drive makers are cramming more and more into the same space.

In all likelihood your drive is failing or your motherboard is. You can’t do anything about it except replace the failed component. Diagnostic tools might help identify the problem, and might not help at all. Tools like Spinrite rely on the drive controller to tell the truth. If it’s lying, fudging, or broken you’re SOL.

  • SSD keeps going read only
  • What makes you say Spinrite isn’t compatible with an SSD? It is actively developed with version 6.1 due out any day bringing additional SSD support.

OP’s SSD is under 2.2 TB and OP is only looking for diagnostic information only. Spinrite will probably give more details than necessary.

SSD's suffer from different, but closely related, troubles due to their having so much data crammed into such a small space.

  • best debloater?
  • If you’re still looking, check out https://github.com/builtbybel/ I played around with BloatyNosy and ThisIsWin11 last weekend on a new build, appeared to work. I didn’t keep the OS install for other unrelated reasons.

  • Microsoft is removing WordPad from Windows after nearly 30 years
  • Ctrl + shift + V should paste in plain text for most applications with the exception of Office products. In Office these keys are mapped to other functions because reasons in 1989 or something. I thought you could configure a hot key for it but I can’t remember off the top. Google fu it.

    Edit: This was bugging me.

Excel appears to respect ctrl shift V

Word, you have two options, I used the latter. https://insider.microsoft365.com/en-us/blog/paste-text-only-shortcut-in-word?ocid=usoc_TWITTER_M365_spl100003894688686

Outlook is being Outlook. You can go to File, Options, Mail, Editor Options, Advanced, and scroll down to the Cut, Copy and Paste section. Make the adjustments that fit your use case. I set Keep Text Only under Pasting from other programs

  • I bought a new Lenovo with Windows 11 preinstalled and apparently if I want to use this laptop I need to have a Microsoft account
  • Leave cable unplugged and Wi-Fi off. Hit shift + F10 for a command prompt, type OOBE\BYPASSNR This removes the internet requirement and brings back the skip for now button. This is a new thing for Home edition in 22H2. I want to type out about how much I dislike both enterprise and consumer Microsoft products, but “if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all” something something. Good luck with your new computer!
