Bluesky's Moderation Architecture | Bluesky
  • I believe that Bluesky will fail. Which is sad because I feel they are trying to make things better.

The people who wanted to leave Twitter have pretty much left. The ones who are left are going to stay. Bluesky have spent too long living in the weeds, with designing and building, and the momentum has been lost.

I hope I'm wrong. And this is only my opinion.

  • Leading adviser quits over Instagram’s failure to remove self-harm content
  • Glad I was sitting down when I read that. Nobody could have predicted that Instagram would only pay lip service to removing harmful content /s

Meta is one of the Evil Corp who is killing people, and destroying lives, through pursuit of profit. It's goal is to frame the health and well-being of people and society to allow advertisers reach a bigger, better and an easier manipulated audience.

I know it's a cliché, and I don't use this often as things have many sides, but I do wonder how people justify this to themselves and what they see when they look in the mirror.

  • Google to shut down Keen, its experimental Pinterest-like social media platform
  • "The decision to shut down Keen is in line with Google's shift away from social media and follows a trend of Area 120 projects closing due to company restructuring and layoffs in 2023them killing everything they build."

  • Would anyone be interested in a telegram channel for lemmy ? Do read ALL the edits as i have added much more context than i had put in the orginal post.
  • I don't understand what you're asking.

You want to setup Lemmy on Telegram? But instead of forum messages that I can read and respond to when I have time, you want it to be instant chat type messages?

I'm confused. If they're are already channels on Telegram for things that Lemmy covers (you mention FOSS channels), then what are you proposing to cover? Why can't we just use Telegram for those things we want to chat about? What are you doing differently?

Lemmy / Reddit / forums are a a different experience to instant chat. If I want instant chat I can find it. Again, confused by what you are proposing.

  • User got a $104K bill from hosting provider(Netlify): “I thought it was a joke”
  • Not everything is an algorithm or ratios. Hopefully you know that.

This is just straight up wrong.

It's not but you do you.

You obviously had an issue with the statement as-made by the CEO.

Go back and read what I wrote. I never wrote that.

The question you’re dodging is essentially “how different would it have to be for you to not have the issue you’re having right now?”

Read what I wrote. You'll find your answer in there.

Unless, of course, you’d just be angry no matter what. If this is the case, it would easily explain why you’re throwing out non-answers and superfluous catty dialogue.

If you don't read what I'm saying, me repeating it again, isn't going to help that.

  • User got a $104K bill from hosting provider(Netlify): “I thought it was a joke”
  • I do. Very important. That's not what happened here.

I don't believe showing up, making a statement and then fucking off again is any kind of 'discussion' or 'taking responsibility'. It's PR.

Paying lip service to recurring issues (and this seems to have escaped people: this has happened multiple times) that are damaging people, is not taking responsibility. It's PR.

  • User got a $104K bill from hosting provider(Netlify): “I thought it was a joke”
  • What's the questions-to-answers ratio to make it acceptable to write "CEO here" in a topic, in your opinion?

Not everything is an algorithm or ratios. Hopefully you know that.

How much and what would he need to post so damage control would have been done (and successfull) in your eyes?

    See above.

Just asking in case I become a CEO and see someone having a solvable issue with my company's sercice.

Theres a solvable issue when your site doesn't deploy. And then theres repeated issues that cause you to send life changing / threatening bills to customers.

If you think they should be treated the same, let me know when you become CEO so I can avoid your business as well.

Good luck with your career though.

  • User got a $104K bill from hosting provider(Netlify): “I thought it was a joke”
  • And that's all he posted. I think he responed to one of two comments and then ignored everything else. I really dislike that 'CEO here', 'I'm important, listen to me' means that always ends up on HN. Then they disappear like their mere response to the post is enough. After all, they're very important people.

If he thought 'damaged control done' he was sadly mistaken.

I host my site on Netlify. I'm moving. If they think that it's acceptable to bill somebody $104k for a small site, at all, without it tripping some alarm for a human to look at before it goes out, then they're doing it wrong. Something that says 'Month 1 bill = $20; Month 2 bill = $104,000' could be a problem isn't difficult to do. And that they have 'done this often' (my words) highlights it's a problem.

There are many bullshit hosting companies out there I can use who don't do this sort of thing. Why is Netlify special.

  • HP is in the rent-a-printer business now
  • HP is so desperate for money that this is what they need to do to survive.

What does HP (hardware) actually do these days? Where do they compete (and I mean compete, not have products in)?

    They ruined Compaq.

They killed their golden goose printing business with bullshit like this.

They killed their server hardware business with bullshit like locking software, drivers and firmware behind support contracts.

As somebody who always bought HP and advocated for their hardware (many years ago), I would never buy anything they make today.

  • [META] Yet another change in community moderation
  • I have never come across a community that had so many moderator posts. I also have never come across a moderator who liked the sound of their own voice so much.

    Glad they are gone.

Hopefully there will be some actual content in here going forward to replace the drama.

  • Debian 12 Taskbar Freezes

I've recently started using Debian 12 with KDE on my laptop and after ironing out most of the teething issues I have a couple left.

The one I have made no progress on is random freezes on the taskbar. I only really notice this when the clock is wrong (as it's frozen) or I go to click an app on the taskbar and nothing happens. If I press the Meta / Windows key the Start menu appears but nothing else seems to work.

There doesn't seem to be a pattern to it. For example it doesn't always happen resuming from sleep. I can be working away and find it's frozen. I have three widgets running (CPU, Memory and Network) but it froze before I added them. Other than that there is nothing fancy on there.

The workaround is to edit the Taskbar and then drag the resize sliders and it strings back to life with the correct time.

I've done the usual Google Search but haven't found anything that's not been fixed, or recent.

    Any help appreciated.
