If dolphins were discovered to be able to understand democracy and you were tasked to train/teach dolphins how it works, what method of voting would you designate for them?
  • Well since we have to teach them to count and they do appear to have some form of language, they could just split themselves into a line and count off.

They would need poll watchers of some kind though, to be sure the count was done fairly.

They also live in smaller communities than people do, so I wouldn't imagine this would be a great solution for a whole nation of dolphins. But it would work for a large pod.

  • Serious question time. Does anyone else have the issue of realizing they haven't had any good experiences with anyone of any public service occupation?
  • I don't trust cops. Even when they are nice to you they're not your friend, trust me.

Have a good relationship with doctors. I have met some arrogant doctors but for the most part they've treated me with kindness.

Psychiatric doctors on the other hand have never been open to hearing me. As my diagnosis isn't one that's officially recognized in my country. And the treatment options aren't well developed here either. CPTSD.

Thankfully I do have a good relationship with my primary care doctor and a decent understanding of pharmacology myself so he helps me with stuff that he can help me with.

Teachers were hit or miss for me. College professors generally much better as they should treat you like an adult.

I'm also white and was male presenting for most of my life. People's perception of gender and perception of race will definitely affect how they treat you, unfortunately.

  • Does anyone else ever feel like not working because they feel like the people where they live are shitty and that working for them feeds the machine of shittiness?
  • I tend to think of most people as being alienated by capitalism because of their jobs. Endlessly fed propaganda and given treats to keep them placated and docile.

We're animals after all. So I don't think of them as shitty people but I instead look for compassion.

That said, unless I'm working for a small business owner I tend to absolutely feel alienated at work and it's crushing. I also have health issues that make work difficult so my relationship with it is extra alienating I suppose.

I guess what I'm trying to tell you is look at your boss as maybe the source of that feeling rather than your fellow working-class people.

Edit: I also live in a working class city, with strong socialist roots. So my view is pretty biased I suppose. In the sense that I'm not living in the middle of a conservative place surrounded by people with vastly different views than myself.

  • Republican mega-donors asked their employees who they will vote for in survey
  • I hope the state goes after them.

The current DA is pretty fucking liberal as far as DAs go.

And they are a big reason why politics in Wisconsin are so stacked in favor of Republicans. They do a lot of business here and her husband is heir to the Schlitz beer fortune. They fund a lot of the Republican state representatives campaigns.

They are also the main reason why Wisconsin is still a prohibition state in regards to marijuana. Supposedly good Christians don't want cannabis competing with their much more destructive and addictive product.

The exact type of people Jesus was talking about in his eye of the needle parable

  • Someone please convince me I'll be alright if Trump wins
  • I'm sorry to hear that.

Unfortunately most of us don't have much power individually. Finding solidarity in our communities I think is one of the most protective things we can do for ourselves, both politically and for our mental health.

I can't really control what state actors due to Elon musk and I don't have much say in the election. I will say that I live in a swing state and I am voting for Kamala if it helps you feel any better lol

  • Ohio sheriff’s lieutenant apologizes for ‘won’t help Democrats’ post, blames sleep medication
  • I've been delirious on more drugs than I care to count, and I didn't suddenly become someone I'm not.

That said, when I thought sleep medication I figured something over the counter and Ambien didn't cross my mind. People do get quite loopy on it

  • Someone please convince me I'll be alright if Trump wins
  • Unless you live in Eastern Europe, I wouldn't expect much fallout from Trump.

It might even turn more people off from populist movements in Europe

Also I agree with the other posters, don't let that orange turd live in your head.

  • "Punitive Grandstanding" as a technique used chiefly by authoritarians on Lemmy and beyond
  • I see more prison abolitionists here on lemmy then most places. And I do think it's a problem more generally. People often want revenge and safety from people who might be violent, and we often mistake this for justice. I'm guilty of it myself, cheering over the idea of Trump going to prison for instance (revenge). But, I did time. I know Trump wouldn't go any place that difficult, anyway. And part of me relishes in the idea of him suffering as I did. But, it's not the way. And it's not justice.

Restorative justice is the way, as you pointed out. And I think if we seed more of that model into the larger lemmy community, posting in larger communities like news, politics, science, etc, as well as (gently) in reply to comments like the ones you're seeing, that people will learn and in turn spread those good ideas. The posters on lemmy are intelligent, and a lot of them do value prison abolition.

It's fertile soil, just has a lot of weeds at the moment.
