  • I think the Deep Rock developers are owned by Embracer now, so I'm not sure if that counts as "indie" anymore, even if they're still a small (and previously somewhat home-grown) studio. But it's still a damn good game - ROCK AND STONE

    • Valve, when they actually make games... and when those games aren't Artifact or Dota Underlords...
    • id Software
    • Telltale Games
    • Frictional Games (Amnesia, SOMA)
    • Red Barrels (Outlast)
    • Playdead (INSIDE, LIMBO)
    • Landfall (Totally Accurate Battle Simulator, ROUNDS, Clustertruck, Totally Accurate Battlegrounds, etc)
    • Daniel Mullins (Inscryption, Pony Island, The Hex)
    • David Szymanski (DUSK, Chop Goblins)
    • Mason Lindroth (Hylics)
    • Obsidian's older stuff
    • Rocksteady's older stuff
    • I have a love/hate relationship with FromSoft
    • Honorable mention to Nightdive: They do fantastic modern remasters of older games, like Quake 1 and 2, System Shock 2, Blood: Fresh Supply, etc.
  • All low settings looks pretty rough, but I'm also usually not super concerned about battery life. I personally use:

    • DX12
    • 103FOV
    • FSR 1.0 highest quality (2.0 looks horrible in DRG for some reason, and lower qualities didn't help a ton)
    • Anti-aliasing: TAA (looks best with FSR)
    • Texture Quality: Ultra (with CryoUtilities, zero performance hit compared to low, but idk about stock)
    • Anti-Aliasing Quality: Ultra (zero performance hit compared to low)
    • View Distance: Ultra (zero performance hit compared to low)
    • Shadow Quality: High (even though low will get you a 10% fps boost, I couldn't stand the zero shadows, and high only has a ~2% hit compared to medium)
    • Effects: High (lowest setting that keeps screen space refections, but this is a 10% fps hit compared to medium and low. Low and medium were identical FPS)
    • Post-Processing: Medium (or high if you use the Better Post Processing Reloaded mod, or if you're okay with chromatic abberation). Low will remove ambient occlusion, but has a 10% FPS boost
    • 11W TDP
    • V-sync'd 40-45hz (still tuning that in)

However, I use CryoUtilities and have a pretty hefty ~40mV undervolt (which can sometimes improve performance). Also note that I have the original LCD model, and apparently the LCD and OLED handle TDP settings pretty differently. So YMMV with these settings.

  • I don't think it's possible to filter the trending games that way, but you can filter the all-time highest rated games that way by using the "Platforms" filter in instant search: https://steamdb.info/instantsearch/?refinementList%5Boslist%5D%5B0%5D=Steam%20Deck%20Verified&refinementList%5Boslist%5D%5B1%5D=Steam%20Deck%20Playable

It also has an option to filter the search by year(s) and by number of ratings/followers, so you could select the current and/or previous year to see what has been trending well-received and popular in the (relatively) short-term.

  • There are some story-rich RPG shooters that are almost pre-2010 I could recommend, like maybe Dishonored or Fallout 3/New Vegas. But pre-2010 is tough, only ones I can think of are the System Shock or maybe Thief games.

  • How detailed is .world's IP logging? I'm sure many privacy-minded users think that's important to know before disabling their VPNs.

Additionally, would it be possible to allow posts/comments that don't have any links or images? Or does even that introduce too much risk?

  • I got NV modded up through the Viva New Vegas guide, so hopefully that fixes the crashes for me. Figuring out how to mod it on linux was surprisingly easy too, thanks to the MO2 linux installer on github.

  • There's no way I'm finishing them all in 1yr, but these are currently on the list (PC/Steam Deck):

    • Totally Accurate Battle Simulator
    • Subnautica
    • American Truck Simulator
    • Fallout: New Vegas
    • Stardew Valley
    • The Witcher 3
    • Slay the Spire
    • Terraria
  • If you're looking for an indie alternative, Roboquest seems like a good recent shooter for two players. It's on both Steam and GOG. Gunfire Reborn also seems fun.

These aren't indies, but there's also Deep Rock Galactic, L4D2, and of course the original Helldivers.

  • If you can stand some uncomfortable scenes and general "Kubrick-weirdness," and want an excellent social commentary on dehumanization and corruption, then yes. Although I have heard a lot of people prefer the book if you'd rather read it.

  • I've been able to stream my non-steam games from my linux desktop to my steam link, at least the ones in Heroic Games Launcher. Although, for that to work I had to use Heroic's "add game to steam" and "minimize heroic on game launch" options. Without the minimize option, the game thought I was using a mouse and keyboard instead of controller.

  • You could probably play the SCS Truck Simulator games basically indefinitely.

Vampire Survivors is an absurdly addicting Deck game, and can be considered grindy if you go for the eggs late-game.

Deep Rock Galactic is a good one too, if you're okay with no aim assist and playing solo or with randoms.

  • I'm perpetually playing Deep Rock Galactic, Halo MCC, and Team Fortress 2, but besides those, here are some other games I played in the last 30 days:

    Desktop (Pop!_OS)

    • CarX Drift Racing Online (2017) - way more difficult than I expected, but fun once you get the hang of it
    • Hylics 2 (2020) - incredible art and soundtrack
    • Landfall Archives (free - 2023) - nice collection of demos from one of my favorite indie dev studios
    • Left 4 Dead 2 (2009) - went back and played with some friends, still awesome
    • MUCK (free - 2021) - tried this out with a few friends, very fun
    • Outlast (2013) - finally completed this classic and loved it
    • POSTAL 2 (2003) - not a game I'd recommend to everyone, but if you're the type of person who would enjoy this type of humor, then you'll really enjoy it

    Steam Deck

    • American Truck Simulator (2016) - nice game to chill out to
    • Finding Paradise (2017) - incredible story
    • Totally Accurate Battle Simulator (2021) - also a nice game to chill out to, but some levels are a lot more difficult than expected (not a bad thing)
    • Vampire Survivors (2022) - I am so addicted please help
  • If you need Android Auto, the closest thing you'll get is LineageOS with some sort of GApps, but those are far from the "privacy and security first" goals of GrapheneOS.

If you are looking for something private/"FOSS-focused" and don't need Android Auto, I like CalyxOS a lot, and have heard good things about DivestOS.
