Home Theater Laptop

I have an old laptop that I want to use to replace the "smart" features on my living room TV. Can anybody recommend a distro and setup which could act like a dashboard / remote control setup?

I want the PC to auto launch to a menu where I can use something like a remote to keep it convenient for lower tech people in my home. Are there remotes controls for this purpose? Distros?

I appreciate any guidance!

What Do I Want?
  • Hope it gets better for you friend. My advice is to try not to tie your identity self worth to your job. Allow yourself to be a normal human. Spend lots of time outside, meditate and deep breath. Praying is also very helpful for your mind. Therapy is good too. Go to a gym that has a sauna. Start with just the sauna if you have to. Then do weightlifting. Try to start cutting out things which mess with dopamine...drugs alcohol porn etc. The sauna and gym will help a lot.

    You can do it!

P.s. doing stuff you don't want to do is the start to kinda wanting to do stuff. There is a willpower part of your brain and it's just like a muscle or needs exercise and practice. The. You will get better at doing uncomfortable things which leads to growth.

  • What are some items that really aren't worth paying the expensive version for?
  • I fully agree with everything you said. Especially the Windows 10 transition. I'm trying to never go Windows 11.

There was a cross post to Linux Lemmy a while ago from Mastodon claiming 'WiNdOwZ jUsT wOrKs" and Linux has too many issues with similarly no specific critique or shown effort of trying absolutely anything. And it just drives me crazy.

Microsoft is absolutely thrilled that we won't troubleshoot anything no matter how small because they like our data.

  • What are some items that really aren't worth paying the expensive version for?
  • That's fine. I understand there is software that Linux doesn't have specifically. That is basically a chicken an egg problem. I think everyone can agree that we'd rather have a FOSS option and not pay adobe anymore.

The point I'm making is if you're going to come on here and say Linux ain't working at least give specific examples. Don't just say it doesn't work because it does work and there is an alternative to everything whether you want to use it or not is a different discussion.

Also , lets hope that the ARM platform is going to bridge this gap. I could be wrong on this but it seems like now that MacOS runs on ARM then we should see a lot more cross compatibility on Linux based ARM systems in the future. (Anyone wanna speculate on when ARM will kill x86, if ever)?

  • What are some items that really aren't worth paying the expensive version for?
  • What isn't it compatible with? All these people making baseless complaints about Linux driving me crazy. Most people are just too lazy to Google an error code. I'm convinced there are hidden Windows shills in the fediverse like undercover Russian spys.

  • Spot on. Migration is a major factor in affecting political change anyway.

Some of these comments are so out of touch. The irony is that people who blanket support pro choice will go extinct as they abort more of their children over time or don't reproduce at all (the people above you in this chain). Conservative people don't abort (now by law) - their population will grow. Thus more anti-abortion laws will happen.

  • Sounds like throwing a fit to me. Learn to troubleshoot. You're not getting inherently worse performance on Linux battery or otherwise. You're just rage baiting and word vomiting online. Why else post this to the Linux community? You know the place that would actually take the time to help you with any of these issues had you posted anything of substance.
