Workers at TJ Maxx and Marshalls are wearing police-like body cameras. Hereโ€™s how itโ€™s going
  • I noticed in my local supermarket in the UK they started wearing cameras too it's really weird. I'm really not sure what their goal is - it will never help shoplifting as much as static cameras, and seems a lot of effort to safeguard against abusive customers.

  • Hogwarts Legacy has officially cleared Zelda as 2023's best-selling game worldwide
  • Eh I dunno, I got bored of it before I finished the story or explored the other half of the map. Feels like a bit of a failing there. 30 hours would be fine if it was a fully contained experience.

  • Pensioners will need ยฃ8,000 more than last year to have a modest retirement
  • This doesn't even make sense to me. Are we assuming these people don't own their own homes and are still paying rent to reach these figures? 31k to be 'moderate' seems absolutely stupid to me if housing is taken care of, and who has 31k a year pension but didn't pay off their mortgage by retirement? Seems their definition of comfortable must include a lot of expensive holidays.

  • Hogwarts Legacy has officially cleared Zelda as 2023's best-selling game worldwide
  • Hogwarts is fun for about 30 hours roleplaying as a wizard, as a casual potter fan. I got really bored of it after that and never finished the game. At its core it really is very generic, it's really propped up by the IP. That's not to say it's bad by any means but its not got the depth of Zelda.

True or not, DeSantis can't escape the raised boot rumors as his campaign falters
  • Exactly lol. He is really going to let his campaign die over not taking his boots off? It's quite obviously true and he can go in the high heel club with Trump and Putin.

  • London rents hit 'record high' of over ยฃ2,000 per month as shrinking supply hits tenants hard
  • House prices are going down. Just not by as much as many expect because ultimately there is still a housing shortage I guess. Also inflation is perhaps offsetting the actual drop in figures but technically is lowering prices too.

  • 2FA works in 1.0 ๐ŸŽ‰
  • Not for me sadly.

  • Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro confirmed to lack Wi-Fi 7 connectivity
  • I mean 10gb/s is already like 20x more than you would need for that and probably more.

Having near 50gb/s is like, the bandwidth of an entire university campus going into your phone or something. Like just so overkill. You could stream 4K netflix over 3000 times over literally. Like, what could the use for that ever be? You couldn't even write or store that much data on your phone lol.

It's like saying you are disappointed because your new car is speed restricted to 50000 mph. Like...cool? It ain't gonna reach that so we're fine.

Which is why I asked if it had other benefits like better range or something, presumably that would be the benefit to be hyped over if any.

  • Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro confirmed to lack Wi-Fi 7 connectivity
  • I mean, if speed is the only reason to upgrade what would be the point? A phone can never make use of 6E speeds it's entirely pointless to have even faster.

Are there some other benefits it's missing out on?

Honestly though by the time wifi 7 is out in the world enough to be utilised the majority of Pixel 8 phones will be on the scrapheap.

  • If he was destroying it for the good of humanity he would have to somehow destroy the concept of it rather than a single platform.

Probably best spending 40 billion on education in the harm social media can do lol.

I really do think he's just delusional. I won't call him an idiot because there is clearly intelligence and talent in his head, but he's gone off the rails in some capacity whether it's mental health issues or power crazed or who knows.

  • EU blindsided by โ€˜spectacularโ€™ solar rollout
  • This part is interesting:

As solar becomes increasingly widespread and electricity prices plummet in the middle of the day when the sun is brightest, some see a risk that the incentive to deploy solar power also decreases, said Esparrago.

That makes grid improvements and the rapid rollout of storage technologies like batteries crucial, experts argue. But the EU is still lagging behind in that area.

I wonder however how far we are from that? There is probably a lot of incentivising that can be done to get people and industry to use this 'surplus' daytime energy up surely. Its weird because its usually the opposite with cheap night rates - I know many people who intentionally consume energy overnight instead of the day because its cheaper. Flip that on its head maybe that isn't as pressing an issue?

  • I mean there are also other countries in the world with various varieties of conservatives but I see your point

Is there a more politically conservative part of the fediverse?
  • I mean, while that could be correct I also consider that if far right spaces get banned regularly then those people are refugees that will invade the next closest thing?

Obviously the next closest thing to far right, is center right. Does that make the center right inherently bad? I don't think so necessarily on principle.

I disagree with conservative views almost entirely but its not something that I believe shouldn't have discussion spaces, unlike far right politics which can just get fucked with their disdain for basic human rights, they don't deserve a seat at the table at all.

I suppose ultimately it's down to moderation isn't it. If conservatives want a seat at the table they have to keep their lunatics in check and if they don't then yeah don't see why I should cry over it really, and thats true of all online communities.

  • is this pixel 6 pro salvageable or should I return it?
  • Yeah I feel you there, it is very annoying. I'm similar to you that I don't mind used phones with some bumps and scrapes to them but a giant glowing line and two dead patches on the screen really make the phone unusable without screen replacement and it doesn't sound like the business made that clear to you at all. Hopefully they will give a refund without issue!

  • is this pixel 6 pro salvageable or should I return it?
  • Did the seller not include a picture of the issue? Because that's pretty shitty if so.

Is there a more politically conservative part of the fediverse?
  • I mean honestly it's probably near impossible to discuss conservative politics online these days without the far right loonies invading, taking over and getting the place banned lol.

Also I wonder if conservatives would be put off lemmy given the political stance of its creators - even though that shouldn't matter being free and open and not controlled by any one person, you know how people are.

  • Vodafone Finds Brits Keep Mobile Phones for 4 Years Instead of 2
  • Yeah honestly I can see why manufacturers are so reluctant to put replaceable batteries in phones. It's one of the main reasons people upgrade these days.

They have the handy excuse that it's to make the phone waterproof and they will die on that hill it seems!

  • Vodafone Finds Brits Keep Mobile Phones for 4 Years Instead of 2
  • Yeah I mean the processing power and general hardware just got to a point where nobody really needs more. In fact my 4 year old phone has the same amount of RAM and similar processor to my new one lol. Unless you're cutting edge 3D gaming it's not needed to have anything more.

I upgraded only because of battery life, higher Hz screen, newer android version, and to get a wide angle lens. Now I have those even its like...what next? Camera quality is all I ever need, screen Hz is perfect. I'm not sure what will make me upgrade next time but if I replace battery down the line and use a third party OS then maybe it'll go even longer!

Red Bull to reduce junior driver count โ€“ Horner

Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner says its planning to cut back on the number of drivers within its junior ranks beyond this year.

The Austrian outfit has been renowned for its approach to bringing a plethora of young drivers into Formula 1 under the watchful eye of Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko.

While Markoโ€™s ruthless approach has often been criticised, it has yielded six Driversโ€™ Championships to this point with drivers whose careers were developed by Red Bull.

As it aims to unearth the next Sebastian Vettel or Max Verstappen, Red Bull currently fields seven drivers across the 20-car grid in F1โ€™s premier feeder series, Formula 2.

However, only Japanese racer Ayumu Iwasa, who sits third at present, remains in realistic title contention with three rounds remaining.

Subsequently, Horner has underlined that Red Bull will begin a process of reducing the number of drivers in its junior programme to ensure only the brightest talents remain.

โ€œI think that look, I mean, things go in waves, it produced Sebastian Vettel, itโ€™s produced Max Verstappen,โ€ Horner said regarding the Red Bull Junior Team on the ESPN Podcast.

โ€œDaniel [Ricciardo] is a graduate of it. Carlos Sainz is a graduate of it. Pierre Gasly is a graduate of it. Thereโ€™s so many drivers itโ€™s given opportunity to and got to Formula 1. Alex Albon being another.

โ€œAnd yeah, itโ€™s focusing a bit more on youth I think going forward as well. We have a lot of drivers in Formula 2 this year, I think that will be thinned out moving forward and perhaps a refocus on perhaps some of the lower formulas as well.

โ€œBut you know, a Max Verstappen or a Sebastian Vettel, they donโ€™t come along every season. So, itโ€™s just making sure that you identify that talent when it does come along.โ€

While Verstappenโ€™s dominance is set to reward him with a third consecutive F1 Driversโ€™ title this year, the effectiveness of Red Bullโ€™s development programme has been called into question somewhat ever since the reigning World Champions drafted in Sergio Perez to partner the Dutchman in 2021.

The Mexicanโ€™s signing marked the first time since Mark Webber in 2006 that Red Bull had fielded a driver in its senior team who hadnโ€™t been a graduate of its illustrious academy.

When Gasly was snapped up by Alpine at the end of last year, Marko again overlooked the Red Bull junior drivers by replacing the Frenchman with Mercedesโ€™ Nyck de Vries.

Whilst de Vriesโ€™ struggles saw him axed only 10 races into his debut F1 campaign, Red Bull elected to place Ricciardo at AlphaTauri for the remainder of the 2023 season.

The 34-year-old Australian was chosen in favour of Red Bull Junior Team member Liam Lawson, who is currently gunning for the title in the Japanese Super Formula series.

Why does the URL field not do anything?

When you create a post, you can fill in a URL, an image, a title, and body text.

It seems if you do all 4 (maybe just the image is the issue?), the URL doesn't seem to be available anywhere on the post.

I have seen a few articles posted without sources and I am wondering if people are posting sources to the URL field as I have just tried to do now on another post, which is then seemingly not displayed either on lemmy.world or on Sync at least. Am I missing it?

Daily Lemmy comments up from ~7m to ~11m following the launch of Sync?

Unless anyone knows another reason for this impressive increase in comments? Seems to roughly coincide with Sync launching. If thats the case, just goes to show the importance of good third party apps.

    Source: https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/dailystats

EDIT: Looks like a confusingly labeled graph and I think this is total comments. I have no idea why that spike could exist though.

Stop posts from hiding after being read?

EDIT: FIXED - Thanks to a helpful Discord user, it turns out this was a setting on Lemmy not on Sync. On lemmy.world settings I had 'show read posts' unchecked. I presume that's default unless I ticked it by accident. Whoops. I'll leave this post up incase it helps anyone else though.

If I read a post, it gets hidden (after a page refresh)

I can't find any way to disable that setting and I really hate it, because I like to revisit threads to check comments on occasion. Does anyone know how to do this?
