abandonware empires
  • Games publishers are in a war of attention and don't want to compete with themselves. They won't sell you an old game if they can get you hooked on the new version with microtransactions and DLC with no story and sub-par multiplayer.

The next point is just making the case for open source.

  • Child casualties in Gaza “a growing stain on our collective conscience”
  • I think I get the point you're making but climate change will fuck over the same people who end up getting fucked over by war.

As is often the case, the wealthiest can deal with the side effects of climate change. The ones who will be most affected by famines and natural disasters are the poorest, most marginalised, most deprived.

I suspect it'll make conflict more likely, not less.

  • Feddit UK update: we're not going anywhere
  • No, it's fine.

The "community" is here, not a matrix chat.

Nothing prevents you setting up your own instance. In fact, I'd say you probably should. If you've invested so much into this name already, then you may as well.

  • JK Rowling prefers two years in jail over using correct pronouns
  • Not sure why you assume this? I never made the claim

  • Labour gain Tamworth
  • Yeah, that is a close gap that could easily be bridged by a consolidated conservative vote. Quite worrying, to be honest.

  • Have your say: What is and isn't acceptable speech in the community.
  • Illegal stuff should be a hard rule. By that I mean calls to action and explicit hate speech should be aggressively removed. It puts the instance at risk.

Auto-filtering might be useful for catching especially egregious words. They're easy to bypass but I guess it should deter some trolling. But it could be tedious if it is overly sensitive. Is it going to block people posting or commenting? Does it let you know you've been caught?

I'm really not sure how well policing "political" topics would go. It's political by nature, so I think even coming up with rules will end up devolving into political discussion. It's probably easier to just say "no hate speech".

  • I'm sorry but Quackhouse is a terrible name.

  • [x] Doubt

Even if you disagree, using a pronoun is just polite. She'd have to go out of her way to do this.

  • Aaaaaaaaaaand this is how you nuke support from orbit.

This way isn't working either. It's time to go back to the drawing board and brainstorm some better ideas.

  • I suspect it's for the publicity. Events like this attract different demographics than the usual targets, so it's more exposure. It might not make the tabloids but it does get reported on.

Historically, any publicity has been seen as good publicity. But, given the reputation they are building, I think this is not how it is playing out.

So I agree, it just makes people with little to no power feel blamed. Time for a change of approach.

  • Do you interact more in Lemmy?
  • I was quite active. But less and less as time goes on, sadly.

The content is drying up, the only really active communities are either tech or political, and my main interests either never left reddit or have a home elsewhere. The nail in the coffin for me will be when my instance dies, which is looking increasingly likely given that the admin is AWOL.

It's ok here, but it's too fragmented to be a full replacement for anything else.

  • Google has sent internet into ‘spiral of decline’, claims DeepMind co-founder
  • I know Google is a big corpo but its hardly the only reason behind the state of the internet. It is a major factor, but to single out Google when Microsoft and others have played just as significant of a role is odd.

  • Major Labour donor to stop funding Just Stop Oil
  • I don’t own a car so I’m confident I’ve not killed anyone on the other side of the world, but my neighbour has a car. I’m pretty sure he hasn’t killed anyone recently either.

But your neighbour's car consumes something for fuel, which does kill people. No, he hasn't mowed someone down. But the system for producing that fuel is exploitative, has been the motivation for wars, and pollutes the atmosphere. You can't claim to be innocent when the system exists to supply the demand.

You might not own a car, but you use electricity at least. Electricity comes from the grid that uses gasoline and coal at some percentage. Your computer and smartphone contain rare metals that are literally the product of mines owned and operated by warlords.

In short, there is no ethical way to stay like this. As time goes on more and more some people will become sick of the middle and upper class acting like they shoulder no responsibility. That's why we are seeing more direct activism.

  • Petition: Call an immediate general election
  • Then don't sign the petition. No need to stress.

  • Major Labour donor to stop funding Just Stop Oil
  • Oh no, he actually thinks this.

Fruitful language aside, is he wrong? Maybe his wording makes you think he literally thinks people are being lined up for gas chambers. But many of the poorest people in the world have suffered horrendously, just so humans on the other side of the world can drive a car. The environmental effects will continue to worsen until whole countries are completely displaced. It's as close to a genocide as it gets, it's just in slow-motion.

Like I said. I don't think their current strategy will work. People need to be the driving force behind the changed.

But this "disrupt MP's" tripe is just that - tripe. The needle won't move until the general public are prepared to put some skin in the game, and they won't unless they are directly inconvenienced. Because like you say, they support someone doing something. Except not themselves. Let the government (pretend to) sort it out, they say. Total apathy. And that's why you end up with groups like Just Stop Oil - they are sick of inaction and excuses.

Do you decide in the moment you catch them? Do you reuse nicknames across saves? Do you not nickname them at all?

As you can see, I have a theme 😅
