Who do you consider a Great Author of the last 50 years or so (first well-known work after 1970)? I'd like to get a feel for who's who in modern literature. Any language/culture. Fiction only.
  • I was looking for McCarthy ITT. I'm going to read Blood Meridian this year after listening to the audiobook years ago. I read The Road around the same time and struggled to get through it because it was so absolutely dreary. I get it obviously I just wanted to say that.

I would recommend also No Country For Old Men as I thought it was all the things McCarthy is amazing at but isn't so violent as the Judge's gang or as consistently hopeless as the world of The Road. It's paced like a thriller while still having an amazing villain. Talking about CM makes me think I should reread these books. I was just out of college when I read/listened to them.

  • i have absolutely no insight into what is going through that moderator's head. i don't care to justify their actions on a board that i did not know about until i read that thread. i came to hexbear after r/cth got banned and then went offline for a few years so i don't know all of the lemmy drama lore.

i just think it's really funny that someone is this upset about being temporarily banned from a forum for being a tedious centrist loser.

  • zinger that would go immaculate on the playground
  • If the comments (and my memory) I read on youtube or fridman's reddit can be trusted Norm got it right more often than not. I thought he added an unnecessary 'I' waayyy more often than he got it right, but I agree with dannoffs I also think Norm just couldn't be arsed to remember the moron's name.

  • My thoughts on watching the debate are that my previously held beliefs that mr nobnel sucks major ass were proven absolutely true. and that the person sitting next to mr bolneni is really gross (this was made even more obvious with your transcripts, so thank you). I haven't read any of Benny Morris's work but I'm sure it's scary.

"Mr. Borelli... you're such a fantastic moron, it's terrifying." is the highlight of the show for me. ad-hom! Norm told an asshole who was in over his head that he is an asshole who was in over his head.

Also near the end Rabbani bringing up Destiny not believing that Jim Crow was apartheid. He's so fucking slimey and gross I can't believe people take him seriously.

[CW: transphobia] MoonOfAlabama opines on trans issues
  • it was funny to listen to the chapo "ladyballers" review. they were like "hey trans people if you're curious you're 100% safe seeing this movie. there's almost no mention of transgender people even at all. what then is the butt of all the jokes in the film? misogyny! it's just all bitchy remarks about ciswomen. these guys hate women"

Bulletins and News Discussion from March 11th to March 17th, 2024 - It's Eurover - COTW: Portugal
  • im sure it's being picked up now by right wing activists but from the kym article about it the beginning of it was a steam-chud made a curator page to just "not recommend" any game he found that SBI worked on and a SBI employee found it and posted about it on x/twitter. they claimed that steam should remove it for harassment. i can't read the proof and the poster is private now.

this is when the freeze-gamer rage really whipped up into a frenzy against the company. so you'd have to be a better internet forensic analyst than me to see who started RT'ing it into RW circles first.
