  • So, sound is vibration, right? And it's going to vibrate as fast as it can, at the fastest rate that liquid can move. So it's not that the rate of movement comes from the speed of sound; if anything, it's the reverse.

  • If it does, the mods and admin under whose aegis I abide are doing an above-average job removing it quickly.

Or maybe it's just that I avoid political discussion communities these days.

In the end, I find the lemmy / piefed / *bin network much more civil, thoughtful, and compassionate than reddit was.

  • I have the Commodore64 my family got used when I was 8.

I've had it less long, but the sewing machiney mother bought after she left college is older than that.

And I inherited it even more recently, but also have my maternal grandfather's electric hair clippers from when he was a teenager, around 1960.

And I bought my house most recently of all, but some of the wiring dates back to 1926 (the house itself was built without electricity in 1880).

  • Yes, I know how it's being used. I just disagree with that usage. Merriam-Webster gives a similar definition and then has the gall to put as definition two "especially the sun and all the planets, moons, and asteroids orbiting it".

But that definition, minus the "especially", used to be the only definition, then the primary definition, and now second definition. It used to be specific to the system orbiting Sol, is my point. Other systems were just called "systems", or if that might've been ambiguous, "stellar systems".

I get that the world has moved on without me, but don't expect me to shut up about it anytime soon.
