  • SciHub great, it really is something else though. ArXiv does cover a bit more than just math and physics, there is some biology, compsci, finance, and economy. But yeah, would be lovely for it to branch out. But that is probably also related to how the fields functions. If the fields do not have an open preprint process, I can imagine quite a bit have to change first.

It is a preprint site, because that is what the researchers need. It's a great tool to "publish" inofficial books and lecture notes in addition to actual articles for journals. For the public, I see no issue. You can see it right there on the arxiv if the article is published in a journal or not (unless the authors are sloppy), and, you can go back to earlier revisions, to get a more detailed view of what the referees and editors did not allow to be published (implied by the changes made).

  • They invited a person from Sweden Democrats, which have been blacklisted from Israel in the past. SD have members who have said "the jews are the root of all evil", are on record for singing antisemitic songs, written prasies of and been photographed with an actual SS volunteer, and generally hold the opinion that jews cannot be swedish, they can only dress in the swedish identity but never belong to the swedish nation. And that is just the top layer of that party who are still there.

  • For lecturers I think it is common to have some condition like "must learn the language in X years of employment". Then in germany I know the uni sometimes provide a reference copy in english of all the hiring documents, like contracts. That is, an english translation that is not legally binding, but still a proper traslation. I did not see the same in france nor italy.

  • Using a refurbished samsung s9+ with/e/OS. Works just fine. Banking apps works for the most part (not some digital-copy of your ID features though). Their support is basically nonexistent, but there has not been any large issues either.

  • I guess this is in reference to the part of the comment:

He is following a playbook written by others who are evil rather than unwitting.

I think you'd in this case have a harder time attributing it to stupidity, when so many in this sphere are openly taking about ending democracy in favour of a tech-feudalism. (Unless one categorize that ideology as "stupid", i guess).

  • Develop minimum preparedness criteria for essential services such as hospitals, schools, transport, and telecommunications.

I hope they are taking this point seriously so that privatized welfare no longer gets special treatment.

  • I think this is a missed trope for solarpunkish scifi: manipulating plants to grow anything. Fabric for clothes growing as bark. Tomatoes with pracetamol in them. Flowers depositing certain minerals it picks up from the ground in them. Stuff like this.

  • I do worry though for a sort of dig in in their policies. Similar to Putin before the invasion. A lot of the far right said that "yes, a strong autocrat, masculin, anti-woke, homophobic person like Putin would be the saviour of Europe". Now some of them, like almost split in the middle, stopped saying "those things are good, look at Putin", but lost no support after the invasion. With Trump its going to be a similar thing, is my worry. "Yeah, but Trump is a bafoon, but massdeportation, autocracy, and capital's control over the government are still important, we will just to ot the proper way" is what it will move to. And of course a lot of europeans, even on the far right, will breath a deep sigh of relief that they can call Trump a bafoon. I think, or worry more like it, it will marginally affect the support for the fra-right, if at all, the liberals that has not already joined the far-right or the socdems will try to shoehorn in a comparison to Trump at every argument, and they will get nowhere.

  • I'm thinking the same. The anti-immigration stuff already is hitting researchers. Getting registrerd, getting a bank account, a phonenumber, the apps (in sweden it is more or less necessary to have an id-app created by a cartel of banks). All of them are growing problems for immigrants in general and researchers in particular.

Is this a "best fit" sort of result or an actual significant measurement on the equation of state?

String theorists have conjectured that the exclusion of a (positive) cosmological constant explanation for dark energy is a prediction of string theory. If this result holds up, that line of research seems quite interesting.
