Use a password manager
  • Apple is releasing a more comprehensive password manager in the next few months, if she’s heavily in the apple ecosystem the switch could be pretty convenient

Obviously bitwarden or keepass would be great but this would be a bump up from being stored in a browser

  • What os do you use on your pc?
  • Dualboot Linux Mint and Windows 10 on main desktop.

    Windows 11 on work laptop

and Xubuntu (i believe) on a cheap laptop i got a few months back for first experimenting w/ linux on

  • Mullvad VPN or Proton VPN?
  • Experience wise i’ve had a better time with mullvad at every corner when it comes to vpns than proton.

Protons still a respectable company i’d say but there focus is gonna become spread more thin while mullvads gonna continue providing a stable and simple experience.

Plus mullvads never gonna confuse you when it comes to pricing unlike proton, no extra time spent finding the difference between a monthly and annual subscription.

  • How FOSS is your setup?
  • Did a fresh install of linux mint recently, because of that a good chunk of my software has been FOSS, however, when it comes to all the gaming related stuff I've installed (drivers, clients, etc.) its been a hit or miss with more proprietary software then i'd like.

Will say, I've struggled for a while to find a good open source music player for local files, I'd love some recommendations (currently trying Rhythmbox but I don't feel I'll love it)

  • Ex Redditors of Lemmy what made you come on over? What happened at Reddit that you made the switch?
  • I had reddit but was never a big user of it, hopping on only for events or to look stuff up. But once I got into federated services and learned about Lemmy I gave it a go. Pretty sure I've used lemmy more then reddit at this point

  • Privacy@Lemmy.ml: Which email alias services allow unlimited aliases for websites *with a custom domain*?
  • You could go with a regular mailing service that has a catch all feature and the ability to forward emails to your main address. You lose out on all the useful features such as disabling certain addresses and open your inbox to more spam but it’s an idea.

Not gonna outright recommend them in a privacy subreddit but for example Cloudflare has a feature like this from what I can tell and so does Apples paid icloud plans.

Could setup your main address as name@example.com and your catch all with a subdomain such as servicename@mail.example.com and just have them forwarded to the first address

  • What would you like to see more of on Lemmy and/or the wider Fediverse?
  • Better search results on major search engines. Not gonna sit here and act like I know what I’m talking about but the major benefit of Reddit was being able to search a question and add “reddit” to the search and getting relevant results from years of posts.

I’d love to see lemmy reach that point as thats honestly been my only reason to open reddit recently

  • What email client are you guys using?
  • i fear your best bet really is just using thunderbird or a fork of it and messing with themes.

I did have the same reaction on my first instal of thunderbird but after customizing it a bit i’ve come to like it

  • How i can stop this google nag banner to login in third party websites?
  • Yep!

    ||id.google.com^ ||accounts.google.com/gsi/$3p ||smartlock.google.com^ ||accounts.google.com/gsi/iframe

Feels pretty overkill at this point, can't help assume most of its redundant but I haven't run into any issues yet. I got them from this firefox support thread a while back

  • The role of attrition against mainstream platforms (Discussion)
  • Questions: What tactics could be used to move people en masse away from mainstream platforms

Keep letting large platforms run themselves into the ground. Has been working with twitter, each substantial change is causing more and more people to ask why in the hell do I wanna stay. Other then that just push those you know to use alternatives

I was able to easily convince friends to switch to firefox from chrome when they announced all those changes to their ad system

  • How i can stop this google nag banner to login in third party websites?
  • Install ublock, add a filter to block the login prompt in the “my rules” section

Can’t find the exact rules I have but when I’m on my desktop i can reply with them, there’s a bunch of variants I found searching for it but they should all work (unless googles changed stuff)

  • What steps do you feel like are before a VPN?
  • First big step I took was going through all my emails and deleting inactive accounts/making deletion requests. It was a major hassle but made me feel a lot more secure about my email and digital footprint. Plus built a real basic understanding about taking a more minimalist approach to the internet, suddenly I wasn’t getting emails every hour and random notifications, it was nice.

Other then that ublock origin and your password manager of choice that hopefully isn’t attached to the browser, oh and 2fa

  • What features am I missing with older Apple TVs?

I recently was given an older apple tv for free (A1625, Apple TV HD, came out in 2015) and it’s capable of running the newest software from what I can tell, I noticed a fair share of apps missing so I was curious what am I missing out on if anything major
