Peter Dutton calls for boycott of Woolworths after Australia Day merchandise dropped
  • Fuck around and find out that stocking shelves for a one day event with cheap plastic crap that isnā€™t selling well is a bad idea?

    ā€˜Help help, Iā€™m being repressed!ā€™

  • Itā€™s Time to End Magical Thinking About Russiaā€™s Defeat
  • This article could have had a number of different headlines, like:

ā€œItā€™s Time to End Magical Thinking That Turning a Blind Eye to a Psychopath will Make Them See the Error of Their Waysā€

    Or maybe:

ā€œWe Made Fun of Communism for Years, but Those Cheeky Fucker Are A Bit Tougher Than We Thought, and Iā€™m Bored Nowā€.

For fucks sake we tried ignoring the travesty of Russia annexing a chunk of Europe in 2014. Ignored Putins goons shooting passenger planes out of the sky. And weā€™re expected to believe This Time it Will Turn Out Different.

    Fucking muppets.

  • Swedish company Northvolt develops new state-of-the-art sodium-ion battery produced with locally sourced materials, entirely independent of traditional battery value chains
  • Great and all, but this is a literal press release. It could be PR spruiking, it could be pumpā€™nā€™dump play, it could be friggin genuinely great. No way to know from a press release.

  • Brazil hits nearly 60Ā°C
  • Three men walk into a bar. The American says, ā€œactually thatā€™s only 1 3/23 men in FreedomTM unitsā€.

  • Is double brick housing good or bad? | Particle
  • Itā€™s mass that holds heat. Rammed earth is great if you donā€™t let it get too hot (so needs shading), or if itā€™s insulated (the best way).

For almost all of Australia bar the tropical north, the best construction is insulated mass - ie cladding (lightweight or not), then a cavity, then loads of insulation and a Vapor membrane, then masonry.

  • Windows PCs can't sleep properly, and Microsoft wants it that way
  • This is one area where Apple has it pretty right. A Mac will do somethings when ā€˜asleepā€™ like download emails and texts. It also can broadcast its location if the ā€˜Find Meā€™ function is on. If itā€™s plugged into power then backups will also run, and background app updates will happen. It does this in a low power mode, so it wonā€™t get hot enough to need fans. Itā€™s worked flawlessly for 20 years. Meanwhile all our PCs are set to ā€˜never sleepā€™ and just get shutdown when not in use. I never trust a PC laptop to wake successfully from sleep just by closing the lid.

  • 'Energy independent' Uruguay runs on 100% renewables for four straight months
  • Itā€™s not even quite that - the article suggested they raised the commercial equivalent of the 12% through competitive auction. These allow the bidders a set price over 20 years.

So itā€™s cheaper than buying in fossil fuels, the suppliers get certainty, and they achieve close to complete decarbonisation using private investment.

    How good is that?

  • The whole premise of ads on Twitter is that theyā€™re targeted.

IBM donā€™t sell consumer crap. They sell smoke and mirrors to major governments and industry. Theyā€™re chasing jobs worth millions per pop. They want ads to target the people making those decisions.

  • Defence whistleblower could plead guilty after appeal rejected
  • Mate, come on, thatā€™s not fair at all. Get your head out of your arse.

ABC have been covering this heaps. They broke the Afghan files story in the first place. Adele Furgheson has literally been writing articles about whistleblowers and David McBride for weeks in the lead up to this. Latest one from looking at the ABC website here: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-11-18/david-mcbride-guilty-plea-whistleblower-protection/103120544

Fairfax is also literally the news link at the top of the OP post here!

There are always excellent reports coming from the ABC & Fairfax with a quality of investigative work that FJ doesnā€™t even come close to matching. ABC & Fairfax may have their faults, but this is not one of them.
