  • “modern” dictators like Putin and Kim seem well-informed.

Putin thought he would take Ukraine in 3 days.

  • Nope, they're still full-on MAGATizing out there. If they realize anything yet, it's only subconsciously and they'll never admit it, even to themselves.

  • I agree that the whole DEI issue arose from republicans controlling the narrative, but things have now moved beyond that.

The question now isn't "these companies have always been evil so why focus on DEI?", the question is "this is where we are--whose side are you on"? IOW one's stance on DEI has become a proxy for who you stand with--the oligarchs or the people.

Businesses/oligarchs getting rid of their DEI policies are doing it to prove to trump, and us as well, that they have now fully joined with him to destroy democracy and form the Oligarchy (along with the christian nationalist faction but that's another topic).

So it's a symbolic action (among others) they are taking to demonstrate that they are now part of the trump regime and consider themselves to be our rulers. Therefore these boycotts of their businesses is our symbolic action that we do not accept them as our overlords and will oppose them.

  • I was just saying to use the which command to make sure you had installed the scan key tool in addition to installing the driver. Looks like you did, but it's not detecting the device (otherwise the -l option would have listed it).

  • I have a Brother printer/scanner and have looked at their website for the drivers, but never bothered to download or install them since I haven't needed them (so far).

If you got no output from those commands, maybe they did not get installed? Try entering the command

    which brscan-skey

and it should tell you the path to where it is installed, or return no output if it is not installed.

I see on the page you linked there is the link to the scanner driver and there is also a link to the Scan Key Tool that it says allows scanning by pressing the button. Did you also install that?

  • The red slash through a circle means "NO", although they have it going in the opposite direction there. I guess it doesn't really make a lot sense in that context either.

  • We had a really good crowd in my purple area of a red state! People of all ages. Lots of good signs. I need to make something good for the next one.

  • Dry Don't cry, clown lady. Your retirement savings may be gone, but at least prices will skyrocket.

edit: dry cry? what happened, brain?

  • The problem is reaching that 3.5%--that's a lot more people than it sounds like, but that's what we'll need. Fortunately, the more people who show up, the more other people will join in, and the more people see them, the more will turn up. That's why the media doesn't want to cover the protests or at least not show footage of the crowds.

Are you willing to show up?

Nonviolent protests are twice as likely to succeed as armed conflicts – and those engaging a threshold of 3.5% of the population have never failed to bring about change.

There are, of course, many ethical reasons to use nonviolent strategies. But compelling research by Erica Chenoweth, a political scientist at Harvard University, confirms that civil disobedience is not only the moral choice; it is also the most powerful way of shaping world politics – by a long way.

Looking at hundreds of campaigns over the last century, Chenoweth found that nonviolent campaigns are twice as likely to achieve their goals as violent campaigns. And although the exact dynamics will depend on many factors, she has shown it takes around 3.5% of the population actively participating in the protests to ensure serious political change.

  • Well, if you're young enough, you could live long enough to see it recover.

  • What makes you think the stock market crashing is not his aim?

I think it's a combination of both that and stupidity, of both him and the oligarchs. Yes, they like manipulating the market and being able to buy up stock when it's down and it was working for a while there, but they didn't bargain on just how far trump would go and how much he would fuck things up. trump figured he could cow other countries they way he does Americans and since he can never admit he's wrong, he'll keep doubling down even though it's not working, causing further havoc. I don't think he believed China would retaliate with a 34% reciprocal tariff, and he's not going to listen to the oligarchs when they tell him it's time to back off. They installed into the presidency a monster they can't control

  • OK honey, go out and start your war or whatever, I'll check to see if you make the 10 o'clock news.

But stop trying to discourage the people who are actually trying to find practical ways of dealing with our current reality, actually taking steps commensurate with that and building a resistance movement, which includes protesting.

  • I'm not so sure that person is simply a "deafeatist American". Their insistence, insults, and number of posts they're putting up to discourage us from protesting tells me it's someone with an agenda, not on our side.

  • And how does not protesting help us "naive children" "gain ground"? You're concern trolling to try and discourage us from standing up for ourselves. Go away if you have nothing to contribute to defending democracy.

  • Gee, you sure seem to be posting a lot of replies trying to discourage us from protesting. 🤔 Hmm, I wonder why that could be?
