Read the reviews. Look for security features. Plus, many advertise free codes, but it turns out - not really (people create, print, and then two weeks later - hello, pay a subscription if you want your code to work again). It sort of depends on the topic. Some things I can do nothing about and I find them infuriating, perhaps to know nothing about. But generally speaking, I agree with the OP, not easy to find a reliable source of information despite the amount (or precisely because of the amount).
