  • who is also a coder

Big mistake, all computer science majors are either incoherent libertarians or liberal treatlers it is known.

  • If you want something even cooler. Umu Launcher lets you have the steam proton experience outside of steam. It's available in nixos 25.05 and it's as easy as umu-run <windows-binary.exe>

It should be integrated in game launchers soon like Heroic and Lutris.

  • They already do cripple computer hardware. It's called Microsoft Windows and Apple MacOS ;)

  • Valve can't make their gambling skinner box game work well on the GNU'st of Linux smh.

  • If that were to ever happen this "AI" industry would disappear entirely with dozens of rounds of government regulation and lawsuits up the ass.

I know that "AI" will never be good because if it was it would spell disaster for oligarchs everywhere who profit off of privatized tech.

  • are you manually packaging your Linux native games into a Nix package? Or did you enable dynamically linking binaries?

No for both. I usually set up a FHS compatible shell environment if I have to do that or run it in a container via podman/distrobox.

Setting up nix-ld is more of a hassle than anything since it touches your system configuration which requires a system rebuild.

  • The only native GNU/Linux games that I trust to work are those you can compile from source.

CS2 seems to just be its own skill issue with how it handles shaders, does forcing proton resolve anything (or does Valve just block you from online play like they do if you force TF2 to run under proton?) I doubt it does though.

  • that I don't get to play the games that won't work on Linux

Which you can count on your hand at this point. For me, if a game doesn't work under proton then it's the weird one.

The larger issue of course is migrating which will always be difficult and the most painful part of the process.

  • Probably some brainworms about how government is inherently slow and bad.

I'm now starting to believe xiaohongshu when they said Trump was a strategy to delegitimize government oversight required for social programs.

  • Whereas Universal healthcare and LLMs have both pros and cons

Often the truth is somewhere in the middle.

  • so you're using LLMs for programming, what have you created? What problems have you solved to make peoples lives better.

I machine generated social media web app slop.

    oh.

  • Is this a Jojo reference.

  • One of the key issues is that disabled people can't build the accessibility they need to participate. There's no "contributions welcome" that one can say.

It's a very dire situation, but I'm glad this is getting more attention in the community. This is probably one of the most important blogposts I've read in a while.

  • I would agree but this new generation of programmers arent even going to get that far.

Real "you just press the run button on your IDE" hours.

  • "I dislike LLMs because the societal/material inputs needed to sustain it are not feasible nor are they sustainable"

"Umm, but that doesn't get you a job cause it's going to be like... The future broo like coding isnt going to exist anymore."

This is what my peers sound like. I'm only doing a CS degree because I want to stay an undergrad for a few more years and its my second degree.

Genuinely frustrating and these brainworms have infected Chinese high-tech industries as well. Like stfu China your AI hype train isnt going to fast track commuism (mostly shanghai/shenzhen brainworms)

    Unlimited bullying of all techbros.

  • Someone would use a word like "proliferate" and he would assume it meant "pro-life."

NGL this is funny AF. Its like a Ricky bit from trailer park boys.

  • My intro to CS course had zero assigned readings. Absolutely no reading was given. No student came out with any foundational insight other than the white boomer professors incoherent rambling about how CS is not like math.

Our most complicated problem in that course was opening a file and writing the contents of a nested list into it in Python. Nothing else was taught so its not like anybody could come out from that course and actually program anything (not to mind the professor endorsing chatgpt use while also forbidding its use for assignments which were just writing code solutions to problems that boil down to a map and filter transformation)

My older siblings who now is employed by Amazon had to teach themselves network programming after they were hired to do what is essentially toilet plumbing for AWS.

CS is a joke fucking field and most of these numbskulls actively enjoy it being simultaneously elitist and washed down. Zero materialist thought too, talking to these clowns youd think computers grow on trees or something.

  • They do all this and the levels in the game are going to be the player slowly being fed exposition while doing menial tasks.

GTA 5 had the same hype cycle and that game was actually a design regression from GTA 4.

GTA6 will probably be 120GB at least

    And cost $120.
