The Los Angeles Dodgers fire Ippei Mizuhara, Shohei Ohtani's long-time interpreter. Mizuhara was accused by Ohtani's attorneys of engaging in a “massive theft” of Ohtani's funds to place bets with an illegal bookmaker, according to the LA Times.
Best case scenario as a Yankees fan. Those Astros rumors were making me nervous. I didn't want the Yankees to sign him but I sure as hell didn't want the Astros to land him either.
Pre-season stats matter very little for pitchers but I agree, the rotation looks bleak without Cole.

Thank you for saying that! I feel the same way but it was a long season of defending a whole army of bots that seemingly weren't being used by anyone.
Reducing bot traffic in order to prevent user-created posts from being drowned out is really my goal here so I think by default I'll leave the pre and post game threads turned off (unless someone really wants them). I also didn't really find the play-by-play comments useful for my purposes so I'll leave those off as well.
Can bots instead change the title of a post, uh, post post?
They certainly could if it was coded that way but I'd have to extend the bot a bit more to do that (and add another config option probably).
You got it! What do you think of skipping the Pre-Game and Post-Game threads and just having a single Game thread? Just thinking that three posts a game is a little much. It might be good to consolidate until at least there's more volume.

Baseball season is almost upon us! For those of you who were around last year, you'll recall that @cerevant@fanaticus.social and I ported over the redball baseball bot to Lemmy and subsequently created a bot for each team.
While that was a lot of fun to work on, not many people interacted in the gameday threads. This year, I am considering scaling back the game bots to an on-demand basis (although you're certainly welcome to create your own!). For those communities that want a baseball bot for your team, let me know in this post and I'll set it up. If you want to run your own and want some help with that, I can help you with that too. Let me know your thoughts! I am open to suggestions.
If you found your home team's community is without a mod, let me know and I'll turn over the keys. I'm really excited for this year's season and am hoping we get a lot more participation and posting from all you lurkers!

Positives:
- Shorten game times and eliminated dead time
- Expanded wild card games
- Humidors everywhere? The sanctity of the statistics must be preserved
- Freely available data and stats! You can do super cool queries on some data and even find archival clips on the MLB Film Room site
Negatives:
- Astros sign stealing scandal, both the investigation (news orgs had to bring it to light) and the punishment were really poorly handled
- Fucking with the baseballs both juicing (possibly tainting a single season HR record?) and deadening them. You gotta be consistent in-season for the sanctity of the statistics
- Humidors everywhere? Isn't it kind of fun that the ball plays differently in different stadiums because ya know, some places are dry and others are wet. Kind of like how each stadium is a little different
- Extra innings ghost runner. This has been said enough times but I'll just add my voice in here too: it's awful and must go
- Inter-league play
- Blackout restrictions

All in all...I'm torn. I appreciate some rule changes that shorten game time without affecting the all holy numbers. But I don't really like the standardization he's brought to the game. Some of my favorite things about baseball are the unique characteristics of each team, city, and stadium. Baseball is a local game, not a national one like the other major sports. I'm intensely invested in my team's division and, to a lesser extent, those in my league.
Considering I'm both a Yankees fan and a big baseball fan generally, I'm torn. I could see myself hate watching this for sure.
As far as dramatization goes, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a sport that lends itself to drama more than baseball. How can you not be romantic and all. Then again, the season is long and players are always coming up with whacky ways to entertain themselves in the dugouts so IDK how they'll be able to spin that with a straight face.
All in all it sounds like a good way to attract new fans to the sport which I'm all for!
Love to see the young guys get signed long time to their home club. I hope the trend continues

Hello everyone! I'm back from vacation (was gone the past two weeks) and am ready to dive back into work on the game bots.
I just wanted to give everyone a quick update. You can check out my previous update thread here.
Status
- All 30 teams have their own game bots configured and activated
- 29 of the game bots run on the same server as fanaticus' lemmy code (big beefy box) with Cerevant running the phillies bot.
- The post limit has been increased in 0.18.1 to 50k from 10k so we no longer have a truncation issue
- The sidebar bot has been ported to lemmy but unfortunately is a bit more limited that we are used to (it only updates the standings of a single division) -- check out what it looks like here
- Cerevant has [identified an issue](Reported: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3544) where pinned posts are not being federated correctly on foreign instances
- There is an issue with the game bots that has occasionally taken down the fanaticus servers (I'll discuss this more below)
Current Issue
Game Bots Out of Control

Game bot will periodically hit a 503 while updating one of its game threads and enter a loop where it continuously attempts to update the post and fail. A bot that enters this state almost immediately spikes one of the server's four CPUs to 100%, then very quickly fills up the shared disk with the same log (GBs of logs). The GBs of logs produced by these rogue bots fill up the server and because the game bots share the same server as fanaticus, they cause the lemmy server to crash.
While I'm not entirely sure what causes this issue, my current hunch is that it's related to a rate limit either with our lemmy or nginx configuration.
When we first started bumping up to the max CPU & memory on our server I upgraded it to a beefy dedicated machine with a quad core and 8GB of RAM. I did not upgrade the shared disk space at that time. The server size was total overkill but I wanted to run the game bots on the same machine.
I've gotten a lot of questions regarding why the game bots were turned off last week and this is the reason. I had to basically babysit them and restart any that ran off the rails and because I was on vacation, I couldn't investigate the bug to fix it or babysit the bots.
Possible Fixes
These are some options I'm tossing around to fix this issue. They're not necessarily going to happen but I'm writing them here publicly so you all know that I'm working on it and to get some public comment.
- Fix the bug, obviously :)
- Move the game bots to another server, separate from fanaticus1
- Create some sort of system that detects the bots are in a runaway state, alerts me, and/or programmatically restarts the bad bots
This is a top priority for me now that I'm back from vacation and I will be working on this starting today.
Future Work
- Add more features to the sidebar bot to achieve feature parity with the former Reddit game bots (team/league leaders, multiple division & playoff standings, live league scoreboards)
- Customizable periodic threads (e.g. a daily "Around the Horn")
- Closer to NBA/NFL/NHL season, we'll port those game bots to lemmy

Finally, another way to contribute is to take over your community's bot and run it yourself! The code is open source and I can help you set it up on your own server. That would make it easier on me so I don't have to run all the bots and you can configure it to your community's liking.
