Types of OS
  • Have you tried installing literally any debian based system recently? Works without a single command.

  • Best Graphic card for Linux Gaming
  • I play on debian stable with steam. Its playable but debian is so far behind on packages that it makes no sense if you‘re sensitive to differences in fps or want peak performance.

Especially if you‘re using an nvidia card its definitely less fun on debian. I made good experiences with pop!os.

If you compare framerates I suggest windows though since linux users usually want a functional, privacy friendly OS which allows them to own their hardware and then comes peak game performance. If trash OS and privacy invasion is cool for you, go for it.

Not saying the performance on average isnt on par but the games are just not made for linux and its not „dead easy“ in every game yet.

  • I don't know anything about Linux and the idea of installing it frightens me. Where do I start?
  • Dont install it, yet. Make a bootable usb stick with balena etcher and put a linux distro on it (I highly recommend mint, pop_os or ubuntu (standard version) as ISO on it.

Ubuntu is very controversial in the more advanced sphere but I learned on it and its great for beginners.

If you want to go a little bit over the top download ventoy and put it on the usb instead. You can then put as many ISOs on there as you can fit and just select one of them at boot.

The most important part for beginners is the desktop environment anyway so gnome should be fine. If you have tried it for more than an hour and still feel like this could be fun, click install and give it a go.

You could also dual boot but windows might fuck you over since they‘re not great neighbors as an OS.

Feel free to ask if you want to know more. Good luck.

  • That works for a lot of companies. Founding a company and making it successful is insanely hard (experience). Not because they somehow deserve to be arrested. i cant judge that. But because they should consider better persec in that case. • Feedback on open source royalty license?
  • This is definitely going to be the future. Not sure if in this exact way but free work for corporations is over.

  • TIL: FairCode is the software model Redis, ElasticSearch, etc. use
  • That is one example. I don't know the name of the fallacy but this is one. Besides that, it should be illegal for corporations to use any code without paying or contributing anyway.

We are going in circles. I‘m sure you mean well so I‘m just gonna agree to disagree here and walk away. Good luck and have a nice day.

  • TIL: FairCode is the software model Redis, ElasticSearch, etc. use
  • With a free license I could get paid though (and the maintainer and project could, too), I would just have to do the work myself to make it happen (by starting a company offering enterprise support for businesses using the project, for example).

I get that. I dont know if you ever built a company but I did, multiple. And that is completely different from coding. Someone can deserve to be paid without opening a company imo.

Don't expect that just because you use a "fair code" license you will be paid - it's likely that companies would just prefer to use a free software project instead (just like today when companies almost never use AGPL licensed code).

I dont expect to get paid because I use a certain license. I expect to get paid if someone uses my work to make money with it. Your argument also has two counters:

    1. companies have stated publicly that they would pay if they had to but they cant if its optional, especially corpos.
    2. just because it is free of charge doesnt mean nobody pays the price. Atm its the same as exploiting poor people or children. They have to comply and be happy about it. People who dont have to make money speak from insane privilege.
  • TIL: FairCode is the software model Redis, ElasticSearch, etc. use
  • Thanks for elaborating. I can see your point.

I would rightfully ask, but you could just refuse. You will become (in this scenario) the company leeching off a developer. And if I'm passionate about the project, I'll probably keep contributing, since I won't be able to profit from a fork anyway.

And what would change from now for you personally? You dont get paid now but with a fair license the maintainer (and the project) would get paid… which they do under commercial licenses anyway.

  • TIL: FairCode is the software model Redis, ElasticSearch, etc. use
  • I accept your argument, it is the same that others have made 100 times. It still does in no way address the issue that the people making these licenses try to address. Instead of actively trying to work together to form something that changes this rotten situation, people poke holes in the efforts of others. But alas.

You're literally telling me only you are allowed to profit from the code I write.

Yes and no. In this fictional situation where you write noteworthy amounts of code for the software I maintain alone, which already gets used by revenue-producing entities and earns some money, you would rightfully ask to be taken on as maintainer and become part of the group profiting from the software, no?

This would obviously also raise the amount of malicious effort to be taken on as maintainer just to leech on code and that issue would be needed to be addressed. But I dont see how your point is more valid than mine.

I feel like most people arguing against this stuff dont really play these scenarios through and always have the big scummy company in mind that coopts this honest idea. But in the meantime they throw every developer and maintainer under the bus that only wants to write code for everyone and keeps getting exploited by his employer (because foss software doesnt pay, duh), who gets chewed on by his users all while someone takes their product and sells it for profit.

„Why not sell it yourself?“ is always a bad faith argument imo. I believe nobody who says they actually make money with foss and also are decent indipendent programmers. As seen in recent events, only the shiny projects get any amount of donations and even that is laughable. The lemmy devs would be millionaires already if they were a company.

Feel free to counter my point.

  • TIL: FairCode is the software model Redis, ElasticSearch, etc. use
  • I acknowledge that you take the time and - in stark opposition to many other members of this community over many posts and months - keep a professional stance.

The reason you‘re seeing namecalling is that you‘re nearly alone in communicating in a normal and constructive matter so the the fronts here are hardened a lot.

That said, most hardline folks are either highly privileged (have enough money so they dont have to make money in their time) or plain acting in bad faith (not being developers/contributors/maintainers but having an opinion in the matter).

So, stripping these away, you have a very heterogeneous group which could come to an agreement how to make both sides happy that is not „then use proprietary license“ because thats not fair to people making software you and I can use, change and fix if we so wish.

Besides ideological reasons („if I cant do everything with it its not free“ and „maintainers dont deserve more than one-line-contributors“) there is very little reason to go hard line on this.

And the „coopt open source label“ is also a populist argument because hard lining is coopting the whole thing in its own way. Nobody has the right to choose what a certain chain of words actually is. Language is developing and changes over time.

Mark my words: Being „no negotioation“ on this topic is going to break the whole idea of FOSS and helps corpos and nobody else

  • TIL: FairCode is the software model Redis, ElasticSearch, etc. use
  • Long text for a really short topic: ideology

Software can be free and open while not allowing megacorps to profit without kicking back.

Being in this community regularly feels like coming to some backwater town where people gasp if you take the lords name in vain.

Wake up. There is no „we make free software and everyone loves each other“. People helping get shut down because they „arent submitting PRs“ but open issues because the maintainers barely have the time to look into issues. If you ask people in this community what they do to help, they respond with i cant code as if that was the only way to help.

The companies sucking in the profits made off of honest people‘s work is kneecapping open source development.

The absolute best joke in it all is that „free and open source software“ isnt at all free. I‘m not free to have individuals use it for free and companies pay because tHaTs nOt fReE. It is thinly veiled corporate exploitation and both corpos and the people with open eyes know it.

In that case we have nothing to fear I guess /s

For those born yesterday: Companies will always do company things. Shareholder value and studies showing that corporations act like psychopaths makes this clear.

Its not important that AI companies can read off of the fediverse but that they cant control the fediverse. As in „holding information ransom“ and „producing garbage ai/bot responses to push search results, etc.

Those who went through enshittification once should know. Those who went through it multuple times have to know that this is a one strike situation. If the owner of a proprietary platform goes this route, we need to look out.

At first glance I think the IP laws are the problem here. A new console should be able to run xbox games and/or ps5 games and compete on hardware and ergonomics alone imo. That way the competition would drive prices down and decisions would again be for improving the service, not the bottom line.

Disclaimer: trolls will be blocked immediately.

  • TIL: FairCode is the software model Redis, ElasticSearch, etc. use
  • Ok, maybe I missed your point. Pretty sure the licenses mentioned on the fair code website are legal and allow you to do just that. If I need to have people sign a cla then I‘ll do it. I‘m not getting robbed so a person submitting 1 line can say they get the same as the maintainer (nothing).

It keeps opinions at bay due to the strong focus on the context. Lemmy has a completely different purpose, more social, imo. Thats fine but it would need to be tailored to favor less answers in higher quality. Probably a reskin with a little added restrictions and logic? I can see how that would work.

Wireguard connecting 1:n docker containers for object storage

Hi folks, I'm trying to put my newly acquired HDDs to good use and at the same time manage the minuscule amount of storage my vps has. Since it is hosting several fedi services, I need some external storage and I figured I'd just tunnel some object storage from home.

So I set up a working wireguard connection from my homenetwork to the vps, connected the object storage (GarageHQ) to one end and probably will connect the fedi services (lemmy, mastodon, matrix, peertube) to the other.

Here comes the issue: do I have to make the respective wireguard instances a proxy for the services to be able to speak with each other or do I even have to make a site to site connection to connect the two docker networks?

The connection would look something like this: GarageHQ---WireguardHS---WireguardVPS---Mastodon|Mastodon---NginxPM---OpenWeb

Anyone got something like this to work so far? Am I overlooking something major?

Thanks for reading, have a good one.

Self hosted remote storage for VPS?

I'm currently running both a home server and a VPS. The former is not reachable through the internet, only through vpn. The latter hosts public services.

The VPS is regularly cutting it very close with storage and today I messed up and crashed the whole stack trying to make an impromptu backup. Lesson learned: we need more storage! I could just rent more storage but just today I updated my home server with 16 TB of raid 1 enterprise HDDs.

So I thought I could maybe do a (wireguard) VPN tunnel directly to some storage service that I host on my homeserver. The upload is not great but realistically I dont need much. The important stuff stays on the VPS. Mainly videos, pictures and other stuff that doesnt get accessed a lot should go there. The rest should be "cached" at the VPS.

I would have to host wireguard on a server port, only have it access one folder which doesnt contain anything important, forward the port on the router and have the vps have the keys. Even if someone gets into the VPS and steals the keys, they only get that one file storage folder.

Has anyone done this? Are there services that do this or do I just host wireguard and thats it?

Thanks for reading. Have a good one! :)

Will an iOS like interface for FOSS phones help with adoption?

Long time iOS user with perception issues here. I went to iOS because it was very simple and intuitive to use. My daily life was too busy for me to tinker with my phone a lot.

Now I'm using pmos with phosh and I'm mostly loving it. But some of the linux specific decisions and directions it takes dont really work with me.

Thats why I started asking myself if a DE exists which is basically a clone of the proprietary apple phone OS. It should obviously still be FOSS and prioritize FOSS apps and so on. But I think it would help adoption by mainstream if iOS users (especially with need for accessibility features). Its basically the reason I was able to switch from minecraft to mineclone. It's basically the same (although I respect their decision to rename to Voxelibre, iirc and go their own way).

I know this is probably going to get a lot of hate because iOS bad and tinkering good and so on. But accessibility is important for many people, especially in their busy lives.

Feel free to point me in the right direction if something like this exists or lets try and make something.

Thanks for reading and have a good one.

Is there a way to manage your presence over many forges?

I'm still learning. I have a github account, many gitlab accounts, a gitlab.com account and my own forgejo.

I managed to clone most stuff to my own forge but managing issues is still a pain on so many platforms, for me at least.

Easiest would be one frontend where I can just combine issues over all my accounts.

Is there a straightforward way I just havent found yet?

Having some issues and not getting anywhere.

Hi folks! Yesterday, I joined the club and installed PostmarketOS+phosh on my "new" OnePlus6. Besides a usb-c (power only) cable that cost me an hour to troubleshoot, everything went smoothly.

Well, nearly everything. What I cant figure out at this point is how to install and get software. I'm on the latest stable release which might have been a mistake but I'm usually quite cautious at first.

So my problem is pmos came with 16 apps preinstalled and the software app only shows these when I open it. Can someone confirm or deny if this is normal? I asked around in 5 different places for stuff in the last 16 hrs (yes, I did sleep in between) and I know a lot of stuff now but this I could not figure out. :D

I know I can install flatpak, which I did but it never shows any results at all which I find unrealistic. I put in the repo like it is shown in the wiki and I have internet. Something else must be wrong.

I'm an admin by trade and I do some software development as a hobby so feel free to assume I know how to use the command line. I'm only a full time linux user for maybe half a year.

Anybody got ideas what might be wrong?

    Google Pixel alternatives?

I'm thinking of getting a second phone to ease off iOS. It has been good for productivity stuff but the closed off nature of the device keeps disrupting my plans. Everything is either expensive or ad ridden. (Except floccus, floccus is awesome)

So far I have read about graphene OS and am quite interested. I really despise google though. Any chance to use another device and put some linux flavor on it? I was playing with the idea of a pinephone but it seems to be nowhere near daily drivable, fairphone is starting at 580 €, volla phone (german) 450 €...

Some people said xiaomi should be rootable. But the amount of different phones is huge. The price range is awesome though. I was thinking sub 300 €/$ would be awesome so tinkering doesnt hurt me financially.

Disclaimer: I dont want to go full hermit mode with no sim and a faraday bag. I respect the opinion but thats not what I'm trying to do. I want to write some small apps for my phone and use it as a computer if needed. Calling, matrix and browser should work flawlessly.

    Any ideas or suggestions? :)

I'm thinking of printing flyers for autism acceptance month. Any good sources?

I would like to help educate people about autism in a healthy way. Reason being I met someone in a critical position who didnt know a thing about autism but had some misconceptions which I find to be very dangerous.

Does anyone have sources of well made and non patronizing/infantilizing texts or something?

Is there a License that requires the user to donate if they make revenue?

I tried a couple license finders and I even looked into the OSI database but I could not find a license that works pretty much like agpl but requiring payment (combined 1% of revenue per month, spread evenly over all FOSS software, if applicable) if one of these is true:

    • the downstream user makes revenue (as in "is a company" or gets donations)
    • the downstream distributor is connected to a commercial user (e.g. to exclude google from making a non profit to circumvent this license)

I ask this because of the backdoor in xz and the obviously rotten situation in billion dollar companies not kicking their fair share back to the people providing this stuff.

So, if something similar exists, feel free to let me know.

Hi folks! After a couple of months of discussions around the topic, I have decided to go ahead and make the first actual anti-coporate community on lemmy, according to lemmyexplorer.org.

The idea is to make people aware of corporate abuse, dangers and further the movement to eventually cap corporations and individuals at 999 mil USD to rebalance the scales for the 99.9 % of the population and keep companies from becoming states.

Are you seeing a massive uptick in pro meta propaganda as well?

I will probably be harassed for this but I feel like I need to act.

The recent debate and decision by world to federate with threads seems to have sparked massive pro meta propaganda. Some accounts post completely one sided articles nearly every day, using carefully crafted language to shape meta as the „facilitator“ of the fediverse and some beligerent benevolent god. You dont have to scroll far in this community to find the posts I‘m talking about.

Please consider reporting these posts for the propaganda they are and asking your admins to defederate from threads.net.

To show you why meta is not welcome in the fediverse, here is a quote from the fedipact which is the reason I have defederated threads in my own instance.

    > THEIR LONG TRACK RECORD OF PURE EVIL\ \ i'm just gonna paste some links here because there's no point in paraphrasing what others have already said more eloquently\ \ (if you're wondering why i'm using archive.org it's to break the fucking paywalls on these articles because fuck that, information wants to be free)\ \ that time they helped facilitate a genocide\ \ that time they helped try to rig an election\ \ that time they did creepy behavioral experimentation on their users\ \ so, yeah. there's legiterally shitloads of precedent here. not to mention all the privacy concerns. which brings us to the need many feel to protect ourselves from this insidious megacorp...

Against one thing meta-shills often try to ascribe: we dont have a problem with the people on there but it is literally everything else.

Thank you very much for reading and have a nice day.

    Sepiasearch for forgefed?

    how to find?

The discussion in this community (and others) often goes toward „where can I find [foss software] with [feature]?“

The answers are often similar. Sometimes its direct links, sometimes its a reference to the awesome list on github (why not forgejo?).

But many things are hard to find on that list and the - although repeating - answers are of varying quality.

    elastic search for forgefed?

What if we instead had a (federated?) search engine for FOSS software with feature tags and PRs/Suggestions which features are in there but not mentioned yet. Basically like sepiasearch by peertube.

Also important: the current state of development, maybe user numbers and stars/ratings/comments. Because some stuff on the awesome list is borderline unusable if you‘re not really deep in tinkering.

    Users are not the enemy

Considering that we are entering a critical phase for FOSS and walled gardens, we should do away with the RTFM approach entirely and embrace semi advanced users starting to use our programs. Although we shouldn’t take all of their shit, we should absolutely start taking criticism ok bad/unusable documentation of UI.

Thanks for reading. I hope my intention shows.

KDE plasma -> discover context menu -> "update" doesnt work

Hi folks, today I would like to solve this non critical issue which doesnt break the system but just bothers me a little:

When Discover (I think its discover?) informs me that I have new updates for my machine on the kde taskbar, I can right click and click „update“ but it doesnt do it.

Even if I have no sudo prompt at that time. Is this due to it being a sudo action or what is the issue? Any ideas?

How to avoid account lockout when using password vault?

I‘ve been using unique passwords and totp for some time but I get uneasy whenever I use my phone as a mfa. The reason is the worry about losing it and potentially getting locked out of my accounts.

Searching for best practices didnt help so far. Thats why I turn to you.

So far I have my password vault and my phone with an authenticator app. I may have stored two backup codes somewhere but I wouldnt find them, ever. Especially not in panic mode.

Since mfa should actually not be on the same device or at least require different things (password and biometrics) I dont think using the totp of my vault is a great idea, right? Or only if I configured the mfa to ask for a pin while the passwords ask for biometrics or something.

If I did this I‘d still lose everything if the vault got lost but thats what backups are for. This solution does not include the mfa (or backup key) to my vault though.

Ideally, I would put it in an actual vault but so the single point of failure probabilities keep increasing.

Any pros here that solve these binds regularly? Whats the best practice? Is there a 3-2-1-backup equivalent?

Edit: btw here is what I found. The encrypted text on paper idea is pretty good but seems very complex. https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/76464/best-practices-for-usefully-storing-two-factor-authentication-backup-codes

My stupidity saved me from being hacked today!

I know, I know, clickbaity title but in a way it did. It also brought in the situation in the first place but I'm just going to deliberately ignore that. Quick recap:

    1. I came home at 3pm from the city, my internet at home didnt work.
    2. checked multiple devices, phones worked out of wifi, I figured I need to restart the router
    3. I login to the router and it responds totally normal but my local network doesnt. (Its always dns, I know)
    4. I check the router log and see 100s of login attempts over the past couple of days.
    5. I panic and pull the plug, try to get into my server by installing an old monitor, works, many errors about dns
    6. Wife googles with her phone, seems I had https login from outside on and someone found the correct port, its disabled now
    7. Obviously, local network still down, I replug everything and ssh into the server which runs pihole as dns
    8. pihole wont start dns, whatever I do
    9. I use history and find I "chmod 700"ed the dns mask directory instead of putting it in a docker volume...
    10. I check the pihole.log, nothing
    11. I check the FTL log, there is the issue
    12. I return it to 777, everything is hunky dory again.

Now I feel very stupid but I found a very dangerous mistake by having my lan fail due to a less dangerous mistake so I'll take this as a win.

Thanks for reading and have a good day! I hope this helps someone at some day.
