Post your Servernames!
  • At home my systems use Star Wars planet names like Naboo, Coruscant, etc.

At work we use Game of Thrones characters (and we've somehow exhausted that list...)

  • I got super spoonfed today!

Unreal RNG to get this at 11kc on day 2 of release! I also got the scarred tablet and awakener's orb by 24 kc too.

  • I know it's not the most popular option here, but Namecheao served me well for several years now. No real complaints that I can think of.

  • What is your favorite open source software?
  • That is a good point, and in my experience Firefox has just kinda sucked less in the last couple of years. But of course that's anecdotal so doesn't really mean much lol

  • what are your favorites foss apps ?
  • Ayyy! Look at that! I got it to work this time :D thanks for the reminder to look at it again lol

  • What is your favorite open source software?
  • Wait for real? I feel like that's their only marketing point sometimes šŸ˜‚

  • what are your favorites foss apps ?
  • I tried setting it up awhile ago but gave up pretty quickly. I'll have to give that another shot though

  • what are your favorites foss apps ?
  • Nextcloud - easily access my self-hosted cloud storage from anywhere when needed. Firefox - browse the web, been a Firefox Stan for ages K-9 Mail - I love the flexibility offered by this mail app AntennaPod - it's been the best podcast app that I've come across that's also pretty configurable Jerboa - Lemmy :P

  • Is it considered bad practice to expose selfhosted services on public internet?
  • It's not bad per se, but you really just need to understand the risks involved and have an idea of how to secure your services properly. I personally won't expose anything if it doesn't have some sort of centralized auth solution (LDAP preferred) and 2FA to better secure accounts.

It's also good practice to have some way of mitigating brute-force attacks with something like fail2ban, and a way to outright block known bad IP addresses.

  • What is your favorite open source software?
  • I'd go with either Firefox or Thunderbird. Both are immensely useful pieces of software that I use on a daily basis, and have evolved (mostly) nicely over time.

Not to give Mozilla too much credit, Nextcloud is also pretty slick!

  • why did you switch?
  • For me it was a couple reasons:

    1. my brother installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my desktop for me when I was in high school, and I was enamored with the different desktop layout. It got me started on the journey.

    2. maintaining it is much easier than windows. Running one command/script to update a system is much faster than heading to the right window or menu and hoping Microsoft delivers you an update. Plus if it breaks it's easier IMO to troubleshoot and fix.

  • Leaving pointless answers/reviews on websites
  • Even if it wasn't shipping and was just packaged broken, it's still 100% worth seeing if they'll replace it.

Whether they do or don't replace it would be more valuable of a review.

  • What operating system do you use on your main computer?
  • Usually Linux Mint and Windows 11, but recently installed Manjaro on my Linux partitions to check it out.

  • Implicit type casting
  • Ah, the way god intended it.

  • What is Your Gaming Rig Setup?
  • Ryzen 7 5800X w/ be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 cooler

    ASRock X570 motherboard

    32GB (16GB x 2) DDR4 RAM @ 3200MHz. Corsair LPX

EVGA FTW 3 RTX 3080 Ti (snagged used for $615!)

1TB Intel 670p SSD (Windows 11), 500GB Samsung 970 Evo SSD (Manjaro), 2TB Seagate Barracuda HDD, 3TB WD Red HDD

Corsair 750W PSU (I forget the model, and yes I know it's a little low-powered for my GPU. It's a holdover from when I had a 5700 XT and 3600X)

    Fractal Meshify 2 Compact case.

Dual-booting Windows 11 and (as of today) Manjaro. I had been running good ole' Linux Mint for awhile but got bored and tried something else.

  • Honest question, will the tech situation improve soon?
  • In theory it should improve, but Lemmy.world getting slammed with a ton of new users all of a sudden really made things bad. It'll take some time to figure out a good solution (e.g. Implementing a way to migrate users to other instances).

Just gotta be a little patient šŸ™‚

  • oh. OH NO
  • I'm not sure I follow the "Oh No" bit of this picture - did someone unbuild your PC and list it for free?

Other than that I have no clue lol.

  • What are you guys doing when there's multiple communities for the same thing across instances?
  • For now while the fediverse is growing I'd subscribe to all of them or at least the ones with a substantial user base, to see where the majority of the community ends up.

Otherwise I wouldn't sweat it. If there's content you miss in one community then just sub as you see fit :)
