  • Severn Trent Water

The complex accounting trick started in March 2017 when a shell company, with no money or assets, called Severn Trent Trimpley was set up as part of the group. Another Severn Trent company called Severn Trent Draycote - which owns the water company - agreed to buy Trimpley for £2.

Trimpley then issued additional shares and Draycote bought them for a staggering £3bn.

No money actually changed hands, however, as Draycote paid Trimpley with a £3bn loan note - effectively an IOU. But, on paper, Trimpley immediately appeared to be worth £3bn because it had the IOU.

Severn Trent Water then acquired 49% of Trimpley - and that investment was valued in the water company's accounts at £1.47bn. A hugely valuable asset appears to have been created for Severn Trent Water out of thin air.

Panorama discovered the Trimpley investment through the work of retired auditor Stanley Root.

  • Drop places.xhtml from the URL (leaving the rest) and it’ll show you the directory view. You can navigate around there. Keep in mind that clicking a xhtml will fail to render, you need to manually type the chrome:// path for whatever you want to poke at.

You can also type: about:about into the address bar to see the various about pages like about:processes

  • He has made his bank and has no major incentive to finish the series. It’s been 13 years, the guy is 76, and he’s supposedly got two books left to go.

My money is on Sanderson getting handed the notes after Martin dies and bringing the series to an unsatisfying conclusion because, at this point, nothing will be satisfying.

  • I’ve literally tied myself over with several series of Sanderson’s while waiting for the final book in the Kingkiller Chronicle series.

I guess there’s always the reassurance that Sanderson will probably pick up any major series that needs finishing haha.

  • They might be wanting to build a proper desktop with RGB and all the jazz. While the Steam Deck does kick ass when plugged into a keyboard, mouse, and monitor, it’s not quite as impactful as a tower in terms of presence.

I use my Deck with the official dock all the time so I don’t disagree with Dindonmasker’s point that the value of a Deck is tremendous and a great alternative to building a tower.

  • If you’re willing and comfortable to share why you went no contact, the context will help people give you more considered advice.

I can’t imagine the wave of feelings and memories getting that message from your father after all this time. I hope you find the right advice you need to support you through this.

  • why should someone else's right to speak infringe upon, even trounce (the better word might be "trump"?) my right to not have to listen?

So perfectly put. I am here to have honest and open conversations, be disagreed with, corrected, and informed of the flaws in my own thinking, so long as that is done through respectful dialogue.

You can disagree without being a douche but those that are only there to troll and hurt others don’t have a right to my time.

And as Lemmy grows, striving to federate healthy and well admined and moderated instances is essential if it is to be a desirable place outsiders will want to join.

Also I’m really impressed by the quality of discussion that goes on on your instance. Dropping in here today has been a pleasure. You’ve got a good thing going over there!

  • I fully agree. I moved to sh.itjust.works and recommend others new to Lemmy to the instance specifically because they defederated with hexbear, lemmygrad, and beehaw (among others).

Defederation is a huge selling point of Lemmy over other services and I have had no negative experiences with other users thanks to instance admins who take the difficult choice to defederate. Imagine if The_Donald could have been blocked along with all of its users. The toxicity that leaked out everywhere from that community was painful. Defederation is that power, and it’s something incredibly positive for Lemmy instances and the users of that instance.

There’s nothing stopping people creating an account on those instances if there are communities there that they care about.

I hope your instance goes for it because it’ll have a wide reaching and positive impact on engagement and community growth when that small fraction of non-lurkers engage and have a positive experience, void of the toxicity that commonly stems from users of hexbear etc.

Edit: I confused Beehaw - they are a fine instance. Other commenters have noted Beehaw defederated with SJW, not the other way round, for different reasons.

  • Hah, that music video is genuinely a pretty accurate depiction of your average England village’s May Day celebrations. I went to one this year, got drunk watching old men skipping about while wearing bells, kids tying up a pole with ribbon, folk band (minus the fabulous Mike Edmonds as seen is this video) playing fiddle and more, sitting around on a bunch of straw bales, and cuddled a goat kid while my dog obsessed over a Shetland pony until my partner told us to go home.

  • Call your mobile provider (and be prepared to jump ship to a different provider) and ask to speak to their “Retentions” department or team. Every big provider has a team whose job it is to keep customers by basically throwing sweeteners at them.

It’s crazy how many services do this if you just call up, asking to cancel. Sky or Virgin (can’t remember which as I’ve not watched broadcast TV in a few years) gave me 3 months free every time I called to cancel.
