  • Look at your school's policy manual. There's likely a policy regarding what they can and cannot do with images of students. Every school I've worked for has some kind of policy around this. In all of them I've read you can opt out of photos being published, but there's usually a caveat that by participating in any school sanctioned event, participation is considered consent to be shown in photos and video of the event.

  • proxmox: Do you use a headless Linux OS as a VM or one with a GUI?
  • If you're setting up Proxmox either use the Proxmox ISO or start with Debian Bookworm. The only Linux machines I have with a GUI are my desktop and my laptop, both running Debian with KDE. All my servers run Debian unless there's a good reason not to.

    Please Consider Defederating from rammy.site
  • You actually don't need to campaign to defederate every instance that offends you. Lemmy provides the ability to report posts and block posts, users, and instances. I get that there are a lot of shitheads, assholes, and idiots on the Internet... Defederating might be throwing the baby out with the bathwater in many cases. Hell, if you listened to everyone shouting about the assholes you shouldn't support no one would be on Lemmy at all. Also, small I hobby instances are run by people with lives. Perhaps the admin will have time in the near future to clean up what's been reported. Or maybe it really is abandoned. We just don't know.

When someone starts campaigning to defederate an instance it immediately starts my senses tingling because I think I'm getting a version of the story... and it's doubtful I'll hear the other side. It offends the same part of as people complaining about downvotes did on Reddit. Take advice from a cartoon dog. "It's not the done thing." Or it shouldn't be, at least.

Had this post just been letting people know what you observed about the instance I would be more moved to investigate and perhaps report posts and block the instance. I might still if I see hateful speech in All... but the implication that their hate will fester, breed, and spread if they aren't immediately defederated is using the same tactics that right wing populists are... by dehumanizing people and playing on other people's fear. It is just as wrong for you as it is for them to do it.

  • If you have spare computing power, consider donating some of that to a distributed computing project
  • Idle computing capacity that installed, online, but is not being used all the time is exactly what I thought the OP was talking about and calling spare. They said computing power to spare, not space or equipment. I don't understand your argument about installing equipment, that to me isn't what OP was talking about. 🤷‍♀️ Kinda like the spare capacity that CompuServe had from their time sharing service that they used to bring their online service to the masses at night.

Sorry you didn't appreciate my reply. I was trying to explain my point with real examples from my experience. I don't need your validation. I kinda regret trying to make you see both sides now. But whatever, you do you.

  • Experiments in Ceph (with Promox)
  • Nice writeup. As long as you can throw fast drives, fast networking and plenty of RAM at it Ceph is happy.

Ceph seems to work fine on my cluster at work. For less than $40k I replaced my whole VMware vSAN cluster and we're saving as much again in software licensing over the next 5 years with buying support from Proxmox. Also much lighter as far as administrative tasks to keep it up to date and running well.

  • I mean yeah, but no. It is spare capacity, so it's spare in one way.

I have hundreds of gigaflops of computing power sitting idle 80% of the time, I just don't think the taxpayers would appreciate the power bill if I put it all to use like that. But at home I can spare a few cycles on my solar power sipping Proxmox cluster.

  • Lemmy.world update: Downtime today / Cloudflare
  • There are alternatives. Akamai has a similar product. It's not free, but it works. Also doesn't require all traffic to go through them all the time, you can repoint your traffic at them on the fly and have them mitigate by scrubbing the unwanted traffic until the attack ends and then switch back, and this can be automated. My ISP at work uses this as they have large swaths of public IP address space to protect for vulnerable members.
